I just want to know if there is any laws when you use a bike carrier/rack.

i have a holdfast carrier which mount onto the tow bar.

Do you have to put up an extra number plate if it obstruct your car's number plate?what about obstructing your back lights etc?

noob, yes you need an extra plate.  The fine up to R500 bucks if it is blocked. They love to do this around argus for the guys comming down from JHB, esp in beaufort west.

the lights dont matter so much

Your rear number plate and lights may not be obstructed. Period.

how do you put your bikes on a carrier and not obstructing the lights?

You can buy a kit which mounts onto the tow bar and connect it to the trailer socket. Some make their own light kits.

Most bike shops should be able to show you a sample.

Far as I know there aren't any. May be different for a trailer though.

To be extra safe I often tie a red rag to the rack or pedal, I know the law requires this if an object protrudes a certain distance from the vehicle.

Which most probably doesn't apply to most of us with bike racks, like I say though, for me personally I do it just to be safe.

if you loose you bikes at 120 of 220 the result is the same , only difference is that you will have to drive back further to collect the pieces .

My bit of info(from a traffic chief).Attachments to vehicle may not protrude more than 300mm from rear(although some you buy do!).The lights or plate may not be obstructed. It is basically up to the cop to use his discretion depending how many bikes on rack etc.Dont want to find a grumpy cop on a bad day.

Here is my home-made device for keeping the traffic police at bay! It attaches to the bike rack with bungi cords.

I think that they should fine you just for the number plate. Wink
