BlueMax

Recommended Posts

I have been going over and over this bike but still cant find ANY good points.

Sorry but i think it is ugly.

PriceOuch

only 2 year warranty(for that kind of money i would expect lifetime extended untill my grandchildren)

1.8kg(heavier than a 4K carbon frame

And it gets POOR reviews in the ratings.

So why would you want to buy this?

Saw a guy in Seapoint that just got his bike at that new shop by the Newport coffee shop. I had a look at the bike and did not like that glitter in the paint.

Nothing wrong with the groupset or wheels on the bike but that frame was not that nice. I've seen cheaper bikes that looks much better.

But we all know the the old saying: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Would I spend that type of money for this bike..................No

As i said this is merely a opinion. For starters the merckx bikes are made buy a guy (or he gets it made) that is one of the best cyclists of all time and now he wants to coin it with his "name".

He has sold the company and like pretty much all frames are made in sweatshops back East

Nothing wrong with that and i wish him all the best. Pinarello has a rich pedigree that goes back yonks and its Italian (basically where the history starts).

So is Bianchi and they made in a sweatshop back East

So i dont say the merckx is not a good bike but in my opinion its not in the same company (pedigree) as the pinarello

You right I think 12yr olds made the Pinarello's and not 8yr olds who made the MerckxWink

What $700' date='00 less?? If they sell a Mercks for $ 4800,00 then they should sell this frame at least for $ 7000,00. Dont think its the same class (IMO)[/quote']

Out of interest, why do you say the Merckx frame is in a different class than the Dogma?

Not so fast bud...the new Merckx and the current range of Pinarello's are all made in the same factory in Japan! A company called Toray makes them for the 2 mentioned companies, as well as a company called OPERA! But I dont think that makes them any less special.

Pinarello until recently held the record for the most TDF wins until surpassed by TREK! But even then, thePinarello wins of Delgado, and 2 of Indurains were on French made TVT92's disguised as Pinarello's!

Although Colnago have not won a TDF, they were the choice of Eddy Merckx for his earlier bikes...and taught him all he needed to know about building bikes! And they are genuinely made in Italy.

Fair enough. I think Eddy Merckx recently sold his interest in the company - other than his name I'm not sure if he has any involvement in the bikes anymore.

Merkcx built some excellent steel and aluminium frames - these old frames still sell for fairly high prices in the USA.

They are made in Taiwan (not Japan?).  Toray is world's top manufacturer of Carbon (based on the site and some reviews) and Pinarello have exclusive use of this Carbon 60.1 (60 tons per square mm breaking power I think) - used for DOGMA....

I guess it all only lasts so long until the next things comes along but it seems Pinarello has been leading the way for a few years now (can not dispute the sucess of Prince) and have to say I think (my view!) DOGMA will receive the same honours as the Prince (bike of the year for 2 years running in Italy and USA - hats off)...

But, most importantly for me (again my view) - I have never been so excited about a bike than with this one and I have had and still have a few (most top end brands).  Just feels and looks fantastic!

By the way, price is approx R52k for frameset locally but you can get most dealers down to R45k-ish - less than the $5500 excl VAT (payable when you collect it) and shipping on most web sites.  See: www.bikewear.co.za for prices but call them for better prices still.

As for Eddy Mercks - I thought he sold his business some time ago to some shoe company and Colnago frames are now made in the East as well (not that this is a bad thing - best Carbon in the world is made there - ask the US Defence Force).

I have ridden the new Dogma and written a review on it as well as a video tour and a comparison to the Prince and FP7 check it out on my blog.

If you are looking at the price you need to look somewhere else for a bike, if you are looking for the ultimate bike this is it.

Only the old style lugged Colnago's are made in Italy, the others are made in Taiwan!  If they were so great, why did Rabobank and the others drop them?  Thay are trying to play catchup with the others.

Nostalgia is great, but paying for it is quesstionable.  It's not the best because it was good yesterday.  That is romantic, but not realistic.  Yes, they are very nice bikes, but seriously not worth the pricetag (Pina or Colnago).  If you want a top end bike you should not pay more than R20k if function is what you want, but I'm guessing that if you are looking at a Pina you are not a realist anyway.

Pianrello's are midlife crisis bikes.
