I have looked at the Kateys, and must admit that they are well specced and handsome looking steeds, but I must agree that pedigree is just as important. Kateys are swinging slow at the CT labs, cause buyers opt for trusted race brands. Rather go for a similar specced Merida with a more affordable price tag!  atraut2010-02-17 05:39:35

I'm with Rock on this on. Go with an established brand with known back-up. MTBikes are a sideline op for KTM. If in a year or two they don't make enough money from it or need R&D money for the 690 Dakar they will drop the whole op like a hot plate.

As far as I know the frames come from the Merida factory so you might as well just get a Mer...or a Giant for that matter.

And if CL doesn't make enough money from stocking the brand THEY might drop it and then you're stuck with an overpriced orange bike from the East.

They do look the business in the flesh though.

Personally, I won't touch a bike without Fox RP rear shock.

Secondly, KTM - yes they look the bomb, but so did Stevens. Don't see them around anymore.

Thirdly - if you plan to do stage races then you would like your bike manufacturer to come to your rescue. The race proven bikes are sorted from distribution and stock perspective and will come to your assistance within 24hours (stories about GT and Giant springs to mind at 2007 Epic).

So far we've had Felt and Merida as the same factory source. Which is incorrect and a little research goes a long way.

- KTM is actually one of the more estabalished cycle brands out there.

- KTM cycles are completely seperate from the motorcycle factory, with their own R&D as well.

- The frames are all manufactured at the factory in Austria.

- Reviews of the bike show it to be well within the 'pedigree' of other bikes out there, especially for racing and marathon events.

- The bikes are also priced and specced competively against most other brands.

Obviously Merida is going to be tough to beat, they really are known for value for money.

Thing like backup are definately worth questioning, but even if CL drop the brand they aren't going to drop support.

Which would only be on the frame really, bicycles are simple enough. The only items to really worry about are the components, which are on just about every other bike as well.

90% of all bikes out ther3e come from Giant or Merida factory. If it does come from Merida i'm sure the build will be good.BMC & Specialized also come from Merida and you guys don't seem to have a problem with those bikes.Looks like they copied the Specialized design anyway so i'm sure the ride will be good.

BUT,i'm with everyone else on this one,how long will Cyclelab do this brand before moving on to the next brand they get a good deel on.Feel sorry for all those suckers who went and bought Volcan.

I'd buy a KTM ( if I had the money ), just cuz there is so few of them on the road. The Volcan looks like some Taiwan knockoff with cheap stickers ( read k@k ), I will not touch it with Stringbean weener.

I'd say your biggest worry is how long CL keep with the brand. The bikes look awesome, but as A.N.Other already said, look what happened with Stevens and I think was it Cube or some other high end brand that came and went in 18months.... You want to know your bike will still be supported here when a factory recall takes place and the guys at the factory direct you to the local agent....!
