I thought it may be intersting to post what members consider the most dangerous piece of road that they ride on, in what City and why.

My vote goes to:

Fishhoek Main Road. Cape Town.

Reason, 1) Taxi's, 2) too many pensioners driving, parking and pulling into the road without looking. 3) cars parrallel parked (opening doors etc...)

I simply never feel safe riding through Fishhoek. Always think that I could be touching tar at any moment.

north rand road. boksburg. ask the tour de frans group.

they're are drunk teens pouring out of the nighclubs onto the road in the early morn.

then you get the weekend shoppers, who're too busy checking out their new purchases or beating their kids for making a performance in the mall to notice you bumping off their windshieldsOuch

Hendrik Potgieter Rd, Roodepoort.

I won't say any road is dangerous, its the people who use it thats dangerous, and the laws are not applied by a government of failures!

By Barry Bateman

Hours after he was sworn in as a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Tshwane's Toenka Matila found himself behind bars, charged with drunken driving.

Matila, who is also SA National Civic Organisation Gauteng acting chairperson, apparently drove into the back of a truck at about 10pm on Tuesday night. He was on his way back to the capital from a Sanco provincial executive meeting.

The incident happened on the north-bound lane of the N1 near the John Vorster Drive off-ramp in Centurion.

Matila protested
A source at the scene of the smash said Matila's Colt Rodeo was written off.

He said that after Matila allegedly failed a breathalyser test, he was arrested and taken to Lyttelton police station.

The source said that Matila protested, claiming that he was a newly-sworn-in member of the provincial legislature and that he would call his contacts to get him out of jail.

DA MPL Jack Bloom said he was present when Matila was sworn in at noon on Tuesday.

"As a matter of courtesy to welcome him to the legislature, I was the only other politician there other than the speaker.

'We cannot pre-empt the police's investigation'
"I am very disappointed that on the day he is sworn in he is involved in an incident like this," he said.

Matila replaced - but only as a ordinary member - the chairperson of the sport portfolio committee, Pule Malefane, who was recently appointed CEO of the Gauteng Tourism Authority.

Legislature spokesperson Jamez Manyapelo said they would reserve comment on the incident.

Because police were investigating the matter, they would wait for the law to follow its course. "We cannot pre-empt the police's investigation."

The legislature would conduct its own investigation and refer the matter to the privileges and ethics committee if necessary, he said.

"Each and every member sworn in is aware of how to conduct themselves," said Manyapelo.

Sanco Gauteng chairperson Richard Mdakane said he had spoken to Matila and was aware that he had been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. "We must allow for the due process of law to take its course.

"As Sanco we believe that the Arrive Alive Campaign is critical and we encourage drivers not to drive under the influence of liquor."

The Pretoria News approached Matila on Wednesday when he went to inspect his wrecked vehicle at the towing service compound.

Wearing an ANC cap and accompanied by two men, Matila declined to comment.

Police spokesperson Captain Lucas Sithole confirmed the incident.

He said a 45-year-old man driving a bakkie allegedly drove into the back of a truck but suffered no injuries.

Sithole said the man was arrested for drunken driving and released from jail with a warning.

He will appear in the Pretoria magistrate's court on October 1.

"All the necessary police investigations were conducted," he said.
