What now after all the black armbands were worn???

I have had contact with quite a few people and it seems that quite a few black armbands were worn.

We CANNOT allow that this effort/sad occasion/remembrance was done for nothing. We as cyclists now need to go to the next step to show that we are ready to commit ourselves to take a positive step in healing the rift between us and "them" (whoever they may be out there)

The Code of Conduct signed by cyclists with a sticker on the helmet or bike is a issue that is starting to happen already as we speak. Those responsible for this please nurture this and ensure that it grows and become reality. Publicity must/will be given to this drive on a National level.

This CANNOT be done without us, the cyclists, and our support and commitment. We have to show "them" we are serious about doing things right.

What I would like to know is, when will "they" commit to change?

If cyclists are comitted to change and starting to do things "right" what is the other side going to do, and how will "they"  help without participation from BOTH sides this will be a waste of time

If you are not involved in promoting change, you may not, God forbid, get the chance to see if "they" are willing to change...... we cannot keep on baring teeth at each other waiting for them to change.

I saw surprisingly few black armbands, it may be indicative of a communication problem. Was there something at the Expo asking people to wear them? (I didn't personally collect my number so have no idea what was there)

After the media coverage of the tragedy, I would have expected more armbands.

I couldn't agree more, we would not be honouring those cyclists who have been killed if we let it stop here.

Training, communication, law enforcement "bedaagsaamheid" and more.

What do these token arm band stuff really help.

Sure, it makes you feel better about yourself, because you care. But, now that you have worn the armband and the event is over, nothing changes.

Everyone goes back to their daily routine, forgetting all the commotion and excitement of displaying their cause.

Will you sign a Cyclist Code Of Conduct and publicly display that you have done it and also obey the code?

Then the solidarity shown by wearing the armbands will be jsutified.

Hardly any and those who did not would have had no idea why they were being worn.

Marketing and motivation for the"happening" was minimal

Time was of the essence and those who wore them made a statement. It was communicated on the Hub, Supercycling and word of mouth. All that could be done was done......... but are you not missing the point here...... the opportunity of starting a new way of thinking in cycling. We should not care or worry about the past..... it is gone forever. Nothing can be done to bring it back...... you as a cyclists though can make a difference. Read my post again and undestand what I am advocating.

Sure, if they achieve something. Maybe everyone seeing the armbands realise they are for a specific cause, and notices that I have committed to the cause.

But, that should be something you personally decide to do. Signing a code of conduct means nothing really. It is a conscious decision you have to make.

It's like sticking the Think Bike stickers on your car and then continue driving like you used to.

No you will have to sign AND publicly display, even maybe in the form of a registration number through which you can be traced...... just a thought....... to ensure that your signature AND HONOUR is not just nothing.

Me too. I did not see many people wearing them, but I think Anriette Really shined with her armband and making our plight known.

I had mine on... took a roll of black tape with me to the start and passed it on.

Many cyclists had no idea RE the black arm band and were rather keen to tape up their arms once they heard what it was about ... finished the roll at the start.

I also had the poster on my back. I think I got some TV coverage off it as I was leading the group for a while while the camera guy and bike came up behind me .. stayed there a while and then moved up.

There could be a commitment to wear your black arm bands every race/funride.

I would also like to add that there were far too many cyclist jumping red traffic lights on their way to and from the start and finish. We can't do this and expect respect from motorists at the same time.
