Help with gears

Ok guys, my first technical booboo/problem.

 

Sunday washed bike and relubed chain.

Washed bike upside down, but took wheels off.

Did not take chain off.

 

When dry, relubed and put wheels on and took for small test drive around the garden, so less than 100 meters.

 

No the gears are funny. Meaning on the read wheels cog, it doesnt go into gear that easily (only some gears) and when on the biggest cog on the wheel and middle cog on the cranck then it wants to climb off into the spokes and that plastic protecter thingy on the rear wheel.

 

Can i fix this? Is this my chain getting slightly worn and stretched?

Keep in mind i only got the bike approx 3 months back and have done 160-170kms on it since new.

 

Can i adjust the read derailer?(?spellling)

DId i make the booboo?

Sounds like you might have adjusted the rear derailleur barrel. It's a small screw like thing where the cable go through that stops the cable outer. Just play around with it a bit. Screwing it in (to the right) will relax the cable and screwing out (left turn) will tighten it. Make sure you get the right gear that is indicated in your gear indicator on the levers. Don't have 3rd gear on the lever and 4th on the cassette. When you get that close to perfect you can then adjust the barrels on your levers to fine tune the change.

aha, thanx man. Ill try that tonight.

If i dont get it  right, can someone near me not help me?

and must i take the bike for a service? does the chain stretch and need readjustment, or am i doing that in this fix?

Where in GP are you? You will only see chain strech roaund about 5000km and with the amount of power our poor mortals put on the chain, not en then yet. The cables will stretch though. The first 4 weeks is when all this happens and then they will stay put until they break. That is why bike shops offer the 1st service free after 4 weeks.

Does it only want to jump into the spokes, or does it jump there? If it only want to jump follow mampara's advice, if it does jump you also need to adjust the range your derralieur is allowed to go.

 

you chain surely isn't worn out yet. especially when assuming you are a recreational cyclist (plastic thingy on teh back wheel has to go off!!).

nevertheless i don't agree with mampara - my chains are often worn out after 1000 k's or less. but i'm riding with lots of force, because i'm heaving and it's my style.

What Mampara said. Also check that the stop screws (phillips, one each for high and low) are set correctly. They prevent the r-der from going into the spokes (low) or dropping between the highest sprocket and the frame (high).

Some trick involved,  but for a base setup I normally set the ders to highest combination, centre the r-der under the rear sprocket (using only the stop screw, with no cable tension) and then take up the cable tension with barrel adjustment and/or resetting the cable in the der (not in this order...). Following this, shift one lower and adjust the barrel until the der shifts. Test and make small adjustments until the shift is crisp and makes not rubbing noise on subsequent pedalling/shifting.

For the lowest sprocket, just shift to lowest (remember to also go to small blade) and adjust the limit screw to prevent movement beyond what is required to move the chain. Rear done.

 

That should sort out the rear. The front is another story altogether...

 

If this takes you longer than half an hour, visit your LBS...

TheLegend, i've riden with infernox - he doesn't put much strain on his chain so i'm with mampara on the "diagnosis" of the problem.

firstyly i have start putting more strain on the chain, i ride 3-6 hourse a week, so im past the recreational stage.

ok now that thats done.

I didnt touch anything in rgards to setings.

ill try mamparas solution, because i couldhv made a booboo there. Or ill just take it in for the free service.

The plastic thingy has to stay, as it protect y mistakes from getting the chain lobbed in the spokes :)

The plastic thingy goes along way in protecting the bike from the bike shop's mistakes: With shifting technology where its at, it's unlikely you'll stuff something up by washing/lubing/shifting. Unless you're the incredible hulk (unlikely?), in which case I'd recommend you forget the whole bike thing and get a Hummer. Wink

Buy the new Bicycling. They have a derraileur adjustment method that is foolproof. I use it and many of the whrenches on the big bicycle teams use it as well. It works and you wont believe how sweet your gear changes will be. Even kempekkernoglia will work properly if you use this method!!!!!!!!

infernox, even if you ride 1-2 hours a day you won't be putting heavy strain ont he chain - you spin more htan you grind and it's grinding heavy gears that stretches the chain faster
