@David: have you contacted MTN Club 100 CT? I had a very nice chat via email with the club secretary re: a few of the common issues mentioned in your letter/this thread. The general consensus was their agreement with the issues in the current setup that we're wanting to see changed.

Please send email address. I do not seem to get response on the address that I have.

16. Commuting.

What improvements have been achieved in the last six months? When will (example) Marine Drive be completed?

Yep.

I have my doubts about this bicycle track along there.

Looks like people walking would also be on it.

And they are a freaking nightmare.

& now they are busy doing roadworks on plattekloof road between koeberg rd and the n7. The road was narrow enough as it is. Now my morning commute across there is quite nerve racked.

I use that section to practice my "sprinting" in front of the cars because it is just not wide enough for the both of us.

Why didnt they finish the parklands - n7 link before doing roadworks over here as well.

Oh well.

Commuting by bike has been rather "interesting" with the roadworks going on...with MANY close calls for me

The letter states the 16 points all kept updated on page 1, raised with answers from PPA in reply.

I am asking for ways to improve present system and comment on suggestions.

I started this Topic and I am righting these letters in a personal capacity.

First reply received from Club this afternoon.

(I will give the Club a chance to voice its own commitment)

In the meantime here are a few comments to my Letter.

Hi David

Thanks for your efforts in drafting this mail...I think you have covered many ideas which a lot of Western Cape cyclists feel, but to which they receive no real answers.

Over time tho, they have been given similar status to a province by CSA (separate to WP), and have managed to establish themselves in such a way that they now have the monopoly in many areas. For example, if you live in CT, it is in your best interest to belong to PPA as all of our local events use their starting groups and seeding system...so not to belong to them would be to spite oneself as you would have to start every event at the back and ride your heart out to achieve any decent time.

To enter the League in the WP, even tho it is not run by PPA but rather a private events company - you still have to have a current PPA member. This year they have received even more "status" by CSA through the licencing rule changes. As all cyclists now have to have some form of a CSA licence, and you can obtain a Cyclosport for free by being a PPA member, whereas if you apply thro a club you are charged R75 by CSA for this same licence. Before, everyone was charged R75 - so obviously you can see this makes the PPA package even more rosy on the outside. We raised much concerns as Clubs as this ruling effectively now means that only cyclists needing a Full racing licence would have a need for a cycling Club. Obviously there are people who join Clubs far more for the social and infrastructure they provide, but for a social rider who is not committed to spending a fortune before they even get out the door and onto a bike,

to first pay PPA fees and then Club fees makes little sense.

Please guys your comments are greatly appreciated. smiley32.gif

PPA - What do they Do?

So the club has given just one of many answers - PPA negotiated for all riders in the province a better levy to the national cycling body CSA!

But Frail their are so many more!

I write this in my private capacity and not as a PPA memeber!

As far as money goes.

I must pay R255 (PPA) plus entries. Which will give me (4 funrides per year) a price saving of R60 per ride.Total R535

When I can ride without PPA or Club membership for R40(licence) plus entry fee per ride, 4 rides per year and save R15.00

Total R520

Until next year when PPA will stop giving discounts towards the licence.

its about time that ppa elect a committee that can point it in the right direction in terms of what it really stands for other than the overstated "promote all forms of cycling"

is it a club?

is it a province?

are they in existence for the recreational cyclists?

are they in existence for racing cyclists?

at the moment they are trying too hard to cover all aspects of cycling and are losing focus on the most important area ie safety for the recreational cyclist.

R225 x 16 000 paid up members = R3 600 000.  Could they be in it for the money ? Wink

3 600 000 would be the annual income then? Divide that by, I would estimate, maybe 10 permanent employees and subtract operating costs and other event related expenses. What do you have left?

I suspect there are better gravy trains to hitch a ride on.

Yep, cycle tour does make a lot of money.

And remember that most of the operating costs are donated.

(Pick n pay, argus, coke etc)

So there is a lot made from it.

Yes a lot does get put back into the community, but it would appear that maybe certain of these funds should have been directed differently to address some of the current issues.

Yes Cycle Tour is a separate kettle of fish - I would think there is big money there and I hear Bellairs is not the most transparent guy when it comes to what happens to it. I didn't like his response about the Argus prize money either.
