Sounds bad you are right but sounds better, than cyclist shout and killed found lying dead in ditch along popular cycling route.

Nope, doesnt.

If thats the choice I'd stop cycling.

But its not the choice, its just whipped-up Hub hysteria getting people excitable.

Armed escort for cyclists? Are we not self-important enough already?

I am keen on getting a gun' date=' but if they realise that we're shooting back, then they will become more aggresive and next time they'll just shoot you instead of holding you at gunpoint.

I fear that will be the case, they have no respect for others so will not hesitate to shoot first in case you are armed

To each his own, your p[rofile says you are in Bahrain? Do you cycle in SA or there?

I use my Le Turbo as my training bike simply because it's less valuable. I've also engraved my name, ID and cell number on the handlebars and other exposed parts. If they take it, they won't be able to do anything with it.

I suggested to Tracker at the Argus Expo that they look into developing a local unit that could, perhaps, drop into the seatpost. The Cape Town agent seemed very keen on the idea, and was going to see what their R&D Department could do. We wait and see.

I also carry Mace whenever I go into less safe areas like Woodstock (the police station there is moving because "the area is too dangerous"). It's attached to my handlebars with Velcro so I can rip it off quickly - though the other option is to have it on your jersey so you can protect yourself, even if not the bike.

Unfortunately, I don't think riding in bigger groups would help. It's just more bikes to steal. However, riding spread out might help. Other riders in sight could get on their cellphones immediately. The guy at the back might be the unluckiest though ...

And with all the weight-saving we try to do with ridiculously expensive parts, carrying a big .357 Magnum is going to defeat the object. Cycle shorts with holsters?

East Rand.

Got lost on my Friday commute looking for a new way home and as always happens I get sucked into the grottiest corners of Germiston. Went through the extensive taxi rank and market, then got off and walked through the crowded station in lycra and cleats to get back on track (sorry for the pun).

Was really disappointed, nobody robbed, shot or threatened me or anything like the Hub promises they would.

Had no chance to use my knife, gun or pepper spray - what a let down.

My view is that if you go expecting trouble you're more than likely to find it, and if you behave reasonably and dont prejudge, you increase your chance of having a good time.

Kinda like the time we took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up riding straight down the main road of a township. I was nervous as anything expecting that at any moment I was going to be pulled off my bike and stabbed, left for dead on the side of the road. No such excitement... everyone just went about their business and pretty much ignored the three lycra-clad whiteys riding through their neighbourhood

I'd hate to be 'patrolled' while I'm out riding, so I just carry on avoiding the 'hot spots' and hoping that I don't find myself in the wrong place at the wrong time

I think there is a misconception about how these stolen bikes are disposed of. I'm pretty certain they're not sold as is, but go to chop-shops and end up as components for sale right here on The Hub, on Gumtree and other online sales places.

Have a quick look at the For Sale column and ask yourself if all these items are really from upgrades.

Yes but have you had a look at yourself in the mirror ?

That's why everybody is scared of you.....

Like I just told somebody you can't live in fear, be aware of your surroundings but live!!!

What we need is a BaitBike. My uncle who lives in the States and still follows news in SA heard about all this on News24. He told me about these BaitBikes that are manufactured specifically with tracking systems inside them. Then all we need is a willing brave soul who will *try* to get this bike stolen without getting killed or worse and can be tracked by Police or security company so that we can find the 'route' these bikes take to get out of the country or sold. Anyway it's better than waiting for something to happen - we want our trails back!

Maybe the hub should start insisting that the serial number of each bike is included in a "For Sale" advert? It is not a big thing, but maybe it will start the ball rolling and carry over to other classifieds like Gumtree and Junkmail.
