Garmin Edge 305 HR/CAD

Anyone has experience with one of these. I am planning on getting one as my new bike has flat handlebars, not supporting the brackets of my current speedometer and Polar watch bracket. It can be mounted on the stem, but is rather large.

I have an Edge 305, what a brilliant piece of kit!!  Check out the motionbased website (www.motionbased.com) it is seriously cool!  You can view your rides on all sorts of maps etc - truly awesome stuff.

Can one share routes with this gadget? I.e. download a course that somebody else did and then ride it with directions?

I was speaking to Ray Chaplin over the weekend (the guy who cycled from CT to JHB and who recently completed the 57.5hrs non-stop ride at Cycle Lab) and he was telling me that he went through 2 or 3 Edges (I can't remember) during his CT to JHB cycle because of them not being 100% waterproof.

He's now decided to move over to Suunto.

Yup.. with the training center you can import files and then load them onto the edge/forerunner. you can then race virtually against someone else. it shows how far ahead/behind you are. very nifty

Does Suunto do a GPS?  I know the Edge is rated for submersion to a depth of 1m for 30minutes.

You can't get turn-by-turn directions as with an auto routing type GPS unit, but it has a 'track back' function that will help you follow an uploaded track.

On my old Etrex Legend this shows an arrow pointing in the direction to go.

Guess it will be similar on the Edge.

Still waiting for mine to be delivered...

Next question. Where can one get these courses' date=' anyplace where they are shared?[/quote']

There are courses shared on www.motionbased.com from all over the world.  I guess the user group needs to grow in this country for there to be a comprehensive database.

I think you can download from motionbased.com. Or you can ask someone who has  recorded the courses to send them to you

I have the Edge 305 and I love it. I mounted the bracket onto the stem as opposed to the handlebars in order to keep the "real estate" clean. Gives me flexibility to move all over the bars. Also, love the fact that it is wireless.
