You shouldn't really worry about what people think - I just cringe when i see guys (or girls) wearing them. Once saw someone who came off hard, their shoulders were shredded - no sleeves, no protection... EINA!!!

It's only an issue if you're racing in a licenced category. Fandacious is right about it being a UCI rule in this respect. You can pretty much dress as you like in the fun ride categories.

So, other than the fact that some people don't LIKE it, why is it not allowed? I have never been a person to follow fashion anyway (I don't shave my legs either).

I use a sleeveless shirt for AR racing. I find it comfortable and ehm... cooler (as in not as warm).

I would say it is not nice to see 190 mens' armpit hair flapping in the wind. And imaging the spray on the team cars behind the peloton. Imagine the race director with a face full of armpit sweat.

In the riders briefing at the Nissan Diamond rush they mentioned UCI regs and sleeveless tops (still don`t know why though)

I was pulled over by CSA officials in a race back in 2002 and got a lambasting for waring sleeveless. :o

Wanted to fine me some Swiss Franks but I talked them out of it......

To the question WHY this was a rule and not allowed.........:

You are more protected with a sleeved shirt than with a sleeveless.

I almost laughed but realised that will cause the fine to come into play again.... :D

Smile and walk away.......

ewwwwww, that is such a gross mental image

The UCI sleeveless rule applies to both road and mtb licenced races. I'm not sure why, probably a dated 'image thing' for the sport, but couldn't be bothered to find out, nor argue it's merits with the race comm.

If it is about safety, for those unexpected ground introductions, then surely UCI should also regulate the type of material, make up, length etc. a sleeve should be.

Otherwise it is just a power hungry few forcing their will on the majority.

I don't see those little sleevies doing anything safety wise.
