XT freewheel body damage after 120 k's use

I had a similar problem with new XT freewheel body.

I'd only had the bike for about 2 weeks.

Be sure you have the correct XT freewheel body, more than one XT model freewheelbody available ( sorry, probably an obvious statement, but possible).

I had a hard time getting a 14 allen key to remove and replace it. I bought two spare bodies ( about R600 each)and took them along on the Joberg2c, but I have not needed them.

Get someone like JB to check this out for you.

Took my brand new XT's out on their maiden voyage yesterday and it lasted all of 6.8km before something went wrong!

Back wheel is not free wheeling at all and effort must be used to turn the back wheel.

 

Taking it back to the shop tomorrow, so Ill see what they say.

 

Damit, another fork for reading the wrong thread, on the other thread the reports were groovy and I thought everything was going to go smoothly

Tankman maybe ask the shop how many returns they have had on their XT wheelsets. It does seem that there might be either a bad batch or a manufacturing fault with all the hubs seezing up latley.

 

Who is the main distrobuter of shimano in SA maybe they can comment on their XT wheelsets.

If all the South Africans spend less money at CRC (25 million annually) the bike shops in SA would be cheaper. All I can say is you get what you pay for.

Firstly, Shimano should honor the warranty doesn't matter where it was purchased from? I am sure the LBS does not cover the expenses of warranty replacements. As long as you have a proof of purchase it should be valid. The only question is how to handle it with Shimano. Going through your LBS is easier as they know the reps but it should not be a closed door altogether. I would be willing to pay the LBS for handling the claim. It's like a service fee.

 

Secondly, if LBS wasn't so ridiculously expensive on certain things and the markup wasn't 80% then more people would purchase locally. It's the chicken and egg scenario, but why should the consumers spend more to pay less in future? Doesn't make sense. LBS should sell for less and sell more volume. My opinion.

Yup, flippen rookies! Should change his name to IR WannabeBike Rider.

 

Shimano has some of the most robust wheels out there and are one of the few that offer wheel sets without a rider weight limit.

I think your logic is also back to front - People buy from CRC because they are being ripped off here in the first place.

How about bike shops make things cheaper and then people wouldn't have to buy from CRC?

Then you should have no problem getting it replaced under warranty.

Local bike shops have a 50% markup, not 80. unless you buy at the wrong shop. Even 80% isn't that bad if you look at clothing stores and food markup. It wont be replaced by the local shimano importers simply because you did not buy it from them. It should by handled by CRC. if more people buy local, the bike shops can stock more for less, because there is no capital to buy million rands worth of stock.

 

Oh and IR Bikepro is sarcasm, aimed at the "professional" bike specialists on this site. I thought it would be an easy concept for such able minded people. Guess not

You do, and mine have been fine as have my 05 shimano hubs which continue to run perfectly. If URBikepro I never take bike to you cos you full of it
