OK, chaps. Enough abuse. Back to the topic...

David George was in form. He didnt have a racing schedule that took priority (ie Vuelta, Tour etc), so he could really concentrate on this event. Same with the Epic - he did really well there too.

With such talent, why has he been without a team for so long?

The boys did a superb job. The route was unbelieveably tough. If you look at the list of DNF's you will appreciate just how tough. Rob was sick and still recovering from an accident. The fact that David finished in the bunch at only 49sec's is proof of his talent. James Perry had an incredible ride and was haging tough until the last few laps. I cannot impress on you how tough the route was. Congrats to all of the guys you really were outta your boots. I think you can all rest assured that Dave will have a contract for the year ahead.

DisapproveI think our best riders have the talent but are missing that final fine tuning to prep them for a really tough event at Worlds level. I keep reading about Evens trainer told him this and that and Cancrella's wind tunnel test helped him in the TT! and so on.

Hunter and Perry were doing hard core races in Italy shortly before the worlds and were'nt given much preparation at all. And George, I guess, just does what he can on his own!

And there's no team training whatsoever.

I can almost read the tactics - or lack of them - George and Perry realised that in a very short time they were on their own teamwise, decided who was in best shape out there on the circuit, and played it accordingly. Nothing else they could do!

And all the cyclists in the Western Cape breathe a sigh of relief - mountain bike and league riders suddenly have a chance again.

Congrats to the whole team.

Looking at the profile, there seems to be about 5800m of climbing in the 14 laps... Dead

DNFs include Voight, Cancellera, Zabriskie, Gusev, Hunter etc so not exactly a bunch of losers.

I think at this level (and this sort of race) once guys have done their work or realise that they are not going to win/podium they pull out. There isn't the reward of a flat stage tomorrow for the pure sprinters so why bother?

Voeckler came in second last of the finishers, 15 minutes off the pace.. why bother??

Congrats anyway to DG for an excellent result

I would rather finish than pull out! There is an honour in finishing a race like that I think at least!

Maybe you have another big race in 3 days time. Rather stop and rest for that. Some also had a job to do for the team and then they can pack up.

There's no honour for Voeckler finishing somethingb like that, only honour is a good result. THis is not the Argus for a funrider. Lapped riders will be called off, thats less than 30min in a 270km race!

Quite right and as far as I know their no prize money {directly} for winning. This race is all about pride and the pride of the nation - not commercial.

Thus is it suprising that the rider with the toughest year in terms of no sponsor for 2007 did the best - or is it that he still needed a result for the year to put his critcts back in their place and to ensure that their will be no back tracking on his 2008 contract? The opportunity taken with open arms! He did not have that many this year.

This is why management at this event can play such a huge role in motivating the riders to give 110% and not just 100%.

I do believe the riders all did very well, Darren Lill only came off with 3 laps to go and as put by Groot Lem their no prises for finishing - it is about winning.

Maybe that is why coached or National team managers are sacked in Sports like Rugby, Cricket and Soccer when the teams are not performing at world championship event. Unfortunately Cycling I do not believe look after their good manager correctly - and we have had some really good managers out of SA in the past who are not just doing it for the money they can get from sponsors, but for the passion of the sport.

I must confess I do not even know who went as the management team this year. So I am not trying to put anyone directly down and maybe this team even did a stunning job, but unfortunately the result dont show it.

Dont get me wrong, i know all the logistics involved in the pro scene.

I road the last edition of the Tour de Eden. on the second stage, i lost the peloton with about 80 odd kays to go. I knew there was no way I would catch the group, or would I make the elimination cut off, but i had to finish the stage. As a result, i can sympathise with a guy like Voeckler. and in my opinion, the guy is going to train the next couple of days anyway; what better training is there to racing and racing hard????

oh and Im not a Argus fun rider Tongue

Darren also came straight from the USA and the Tour of Missouri (where he took 18 secs out of Contador in the TT) The training stress and time zone adjustment takes a big toll.

There is quite substantial prize money for the world champs but only for 1st 3 I believe.

On a circuit race with quite short lap distances - 18k in this years case - the referees want everyone who is about to be lapped off the circuit. 18k's is 20 - 25 minutes and you will see from the results that all those who finished were the only ones still on the same lap. i.e. no finishers over 21mins behind. So unfortunatley, satisfying personal pride is not an issue that is considered! NO CHANCE OF WINNING SO GET OUT OF THE WAY is the motto at World Champs.

Just checked on UCI site and min. prize money for road race winner is 11,500 Swiss Francs. 8,050 for 2nd and 4,600 for 3rd.

Elite TT winner gets5750, U23 RR winner - 5750. This is a minimum amount.

It is strange how everyone says he is the best now? he was an outcast before!i have seen that guy train in rain ,wind ,traffic for these world champs,I hope he is not too dissapointed he did not get a podium place(which he deserves).Forget the politics and personalities and respect the rider.NNF

OK, now that you have flogged that one to death, how about the other South African connection that took a world title, no not Taylorchick, I'm talking about Peter Velits!  I see cyclingnews.com gave him AND Barry Austin a nice write up.  I wonder if the will race in SA now that Wiesenhof has disbanded?  Looks like the brothers are looking for a team.

Strange how even being World Champ does not secure you a ride.  Who wants to be a pro rider these days?!

11 500 SF is 6900 euro...for a guy like Bettini that's money for  a new watch.

I'm sure the 300 000 euro he got  from his National body will help though :-)
