94cm inseam. I used to ride with a 180mm standard crank but changed to a 175mm compact in the hopes that it would resolve some knee problems.

1.87m tall - Currently using 177.5

First bike had a 172.5 on, to short didnt keep it on long.

Changed to 175 and used 175 for years.

Changed to 177.5 - and WHAM - wished I tried it sooner!

Did notice a difference in the climbs! More leverage more power.

Did not notice a difference in cadence - checked training history - no change in cadence. Those are old wife stories!

2.5mm is not such a huge change, I mean really have a look at a ruler and notice how close 172.5 and 175mm or 177.5 really is.

Next time I am trying 180mm, definitely for TT.

I am 1.89 and riding 175mm, but I am riding my dad's bike and he said he wished he had put 180mm cranks on. So one day when I am big (and upgrade my groupo) I think I'll get 180's.

Tankman, how do the 177.5's compare to the 175's?

BMAN No need to measure it will bet you it is 175mm, most complete bike come out with 175mm and it is stamped in the inside arm of the crank.

:D

180mm on my road bike (not many people can push 180mm)

175mm on my MTB

Why do you say that ?? A longer lever needs less force to move an object, so its easier to push 180's not harder. The pedalling circle increases and as such your knee joint now opens and closes in a wider range. I used 200mm craqnks for 10 years and had no problems at all. Rode the pursuit on the track at 105rpm cadence so spinning them is not a problem either. I only changed back to 180's as I put SRM's on and that is the longest they make, and I wanted to do the bunch races on the track, requiring movement up the banking, which may have been a problem on the 200's

Got a set of 200mm Zinn cranks for sale now !!!

Not sure about MTB, but on road bikes you generally need to go high-end or aftermarket for anything longer than 175m. For Campag, only Record and Super Record cranks are 177.5mm or 180mm. Shimano only has long cranks in Dura Ace. SRAM goes to 177.5mm on Force and Red. Surprisingly, you can get 180mm in Rival, though.

If your cranks an XT, I reckon it's 175mm or shorter.

The 177.5 suits me better.

To be honest on flats and downhills I did not notice a difference. Going uphill I could definitely notice the difference in the beginning. Felt like there was more leverage and I was able to push a bigger gear for longer. But as with all other feeling on new equipment, I am now used to it and dont notice it any longer.

I did quite a bit of research on the web with a million different answers and calculators before changing to a longer crank. I expected a noticeable change in my cadence which was absolute BS, after looking into my training history, I could not tell that anything has changed. Except that the 177.5 felt better!

I guess if you have been riding your bike at a certain cadence for so many years, adding 2.5mm is not really going to change what your body is used to.

LOL!

I think Westdene Cycles were just keen on the sale...

Setup didnt even come up during the sale - and I didnt even know better - to ask!
