Sweetspot to Organise First Tour of South Africa Cycle Race

Events agency, Sweetspot, creators of the Tour of Britain cycle race, has won the contract to organise a similar event in South Africa. The new Tour of South Africa will take place over seven days from 18 November 2007 with 20 teams taking part.

The race will follow a similar model to other leading cycle races, such as the Tour of Britain and Le Tour de France. There is no single event sponsor, instead funding comes from a combination of both the public and private sectors, with a host of commercial opportunities available. The race will form part of the elite professional calendar in 2007 and is expected to attract leading cycling teams from the UK, Germany, Japan, USA and South Africa.

Sweetspot is currently working with a number of partners including, Cycling South Africa, South Africa Tourism, and the South African International Marketing  Council to finalise the route and to maximise the impact of the race on the country?s economy. A foundation will be established to ensure surplus income is re-invested into community projects across the country. The official launch of the Tour of South Africa will take place at the South African High Commission in London on the evening of Tuesday 30th January.

Anyone interested in finding out more can contact Sweetspot directly on 0870 112 8650, or can contact its media and sponsorship agency Perfect Motion on 0115 9258777.

The Tour of South Africa 2008 is a high profile international professional bicycle race held over eight days and will join the ranks of other great national tours such as Le Tour de France and The Tour of Britain.

The race has the sanction of The South African Cycling Federation (SACF) and the International Cycling Union (UCI) which has granted it a 2.2 classification and has been designated at eight days from 16th - 23rd March 2008 with the future potential for additional stages already being discussed with the UCI.

South Africa is one of the world?s top sporting nations with remarkable landscape and cultural assets; South Africa thoroughly deserves the highest calibre of race to showcase the country and its people and to demonstrate and reinforce its capacity of hosting major sporting events.

As a major international sports event the Tour of South Africa is able to develop and grow in a sustainable way to benefit and involve the various communities it visits, bring real economic gain, showcase the cultural diversity and promote regions for tourism.

The Tour of South Africa has great potential to achieve these objectives.

Since this starts after the Argus Cycletour, is it replacing the giro del capo?

I dont see any mention of a 2008 giro.
