Most of the slower teams do around 8-10hrs

If you're gonna start them @ 7am, they're only gonna finish @ 5pm - logistics becomes a bit of a nightmare.

i'm guessing start is spread over 2 hours then?

cut the gaps between groups in half to spread it over 1 hour. This seems like it will cause more congestion but with faster guys starting first it will actually improve things, especially later in the day when the true racers will have completely clear roads.

Then start a few minutes earlier and/or cut finishing time by a few minutes and/or get pros to ride in the dark a little longer and/or rectrict amount of teams entering.

Obviously you've never stood queue @ single track before. MTBers are even worse than roadies. They think the track belongs to them and heaven help anyone holding them up

That's why i put in the last sentence! MTB has the ability to become just as bad (i.e abusive...at least the bugger is stationary at the hold-up and one can sort him out on the spot :D )

I agree - its very rude to try jump in a faster teams paceline while they are sweating blood, and then get your panties in a bunch when you get shouted at

Once again I experienced it this past weekend during the DC! Get out of the f'n way you dchead! Absolute mayhem caused by the extreme abusive and aggesive language and attitude of my fellow cyclists! This is not the frontrunners! Don't take yourself so seriously boet, you will not win in any case! Man, I loved every km of the DC with a great smile on my face, why on earth are you cycling? Go boxing where someone can pummel the attitude out of you! Relax and enjoy it! Yes, I also ride very competitively, but I have never treated any other cyclist with disrespect, and if you can not lose the attitude, then please lose the bike! Don't take yourself so seriously! Eish man!

I forgot about this previously, but at triathlons if you swear or use foul language at anyone, you get DQd. Immidiately.

Hmmm... Some interesting reading.

My experience is that if you are coming up behind a fellow MTB'er just call out on which side you are going to pass and then go for it... if they look like a noob give them a wider berth and pedal faster!

I rode the Hill2Hill with a noob and the elite men caught us, these are the guys that race for a living and they were very polite when overtaking...

If they can be polite, so can I.

Nope - not gona work, it was freakin hairy the first 60 - 80km's with a 1minute gap between teams, and I'm sure the organisers have a good enough reason for making the gaps @ 1min (some teams were leaving together - 2 teams @ 1 minute intervals).

If you did the DC you would understand...

There are a couple of ways to look at this. Yes, that kind of attitude sucks. I agree.

On the other hand, when you have a fairly large field, like Dome to Dome or telkom satelite, one often ends up with slower riders falling out of their bunches and using up a whole chink more road than they need. Weaving and generally getting in the way of other faster groups and riders coming up from behind.

There is a great deal of difference between asking nicely for the slower riders to maybe move more to the left so the faster guys have more space to pass safely. I got some serious verbal abuse asking nicely, and yes, I agree, I wasn't ever going to win the race, but I was racing as seriously as I could, because I wanted to get the best time possible.

So the bad attitude goes both ways. While you may have been taking in an enjoyable Sunday ride, maybe the more serious people behind were in some form of competition. Either with themselves for a PB, or maybe they had time deadlines to meet for any number of reasons.

One such cyclist missed out on a 2h40 94.7 and the net result was a lot less money for the charity he was riding for.

The slower peeps need to acknowledge that faster riders may be behind them and just maybe it would be common courtesy for them to be more left. Then the racing snakes wont have to ask or use abusive language. :(

But like that's just my take on it. Some more plain common courtesy between all of us will only make the world a better place. Nes pas?

Im sure theres 2 sides to this story.

Because all the faster teams start last, they have to weave thru a crap load of funriders.

When you hit 150km at an avg of 37km/h, the last thing you need is another fun rider crawling along @ 15km/h in the middle of the road like he owns the race.

Or even worse, your paceline comes flying past the slow riders and they try jump into the middle of your paceline, and end up knocking off some of your riders who have to work their balls off to get back onto the line

So maybe thats why you got shouted at?

Remember - the guys are absolutely ****** after doing such a long distance at such speed - tempers are very short.

Exactly, we had guys trying to jump on the back of our group. When they were asked to move out of our paceline the abuse came from them. "Relax arsehole you're not going to win it". Lucky for them we were in a hurry.

If common courtesy does not work it means he/she does not want to listen.... slap the fokker hard on the head..... that is waht he deserves

Fand admitted nothing, and has no need to. Passing 12 cyclists riding side-by-side with a speed differential in excess of 25km/h, with on coming traffic is quite scary. If yelling out "Keep left" is bad manners, then I give up. Certainly didn't warrant half the rude replies we got.

And that isn't the real problem. The situation was made far worse by the backup vehicle. We've all learned how to deal with slower riders over the years, but a backup vehicle seems to behave in a completely unpredictable manner. No amount of yelling was enough to get their attention.

Generally, the slower the teams was that we were passing, the worse the abuse was that we got. (I apologise for generalising - there were plenty of teams that yelled encouragement and cheered us on too).

interesting take... before the race started i would have optimistically put us in 10th place. However, the gods smiled upon as and we're 5th or 6th (depending on AT outcome). 10more mins and we would have podiumed... so who the hell is some funrider to tell someone "screw you arsehole, you're not going to win it" - how the hell do they know. They should use their clairvoyant gift and play the lotto instead of being obtuse
