Attack- Hermanus

Hey hubbers.

Yesterday (21-12-2010), while riding past/ through Mount Pleasant my Dad was attacked by two guys. This is the story as he explained it to me:

As he was riding through Mount Pleasant, on the main road leading into and out of Hermanus, two guys jumped out at him as he rode past. He had to swerve out of the way and into the road to avoid them. He stopped to confront them, and told them what he thought.... One of the guys picked up a brick and threw it at him/ the bike, hitting the fork and putting a big gouge/dent in the lowers. They then "attacked" him as the one guy put him in a headlock, strangling him, as the other guy tried to hit with the brick. Luckily a security van drove past and notified the Police who turned up quickly. When he said that he would like to procceed by pressing charges, one of the police officers immediatley asked the two attackers if the would like to press charges against him- WTF??!! This, after the fact that the cops mentioned that the guys were most probably high on TIK... They were released a little while later... We now have to worry about our safety as we ride past this area (there is no alternative route) every day, and should something happen, we must just ride on and hope all will be okay

Anyway, just as much as this is a rant about safety and security, it is a warning to all cyclists in the Hermanus area.

Safe Cycling,

Happy Trails,

Jarryd.

That's simply unacceptable.

Hermanus is a big place in season - not so big out of season.

I would kick up an unholy stink in the local newspaper - write a letter addressed to the Station Commander etc., speak to the Dominee etc. etc. but don't let this slide - before you know it incidents like that become common, and there goes the proverbial neighbourhood...

Of course - you might only be there on holiday??

Glad to hear your dad was ok!

Really sorry to hear about your dad's incident. I hope he is okay. But I can't help but wonder if it might have been different had he just rode on instead of stopping to confront the guys and telling them what he thought? As it is, he was outnumbered to start with, and it can only go downhill from there.

Although it was a risk, I am glad he stood up to the thugs. What is poor though is that they were let out so quickly. Were they let out on bail? Are they still to appear in court? There must be more to this as I do not believe the cops are able to simply let them out. There are procedures to follow.

Where exactly is Mount Pleasant? I'm going to ride in and around Hermanus for the next week. I sometimes also do the Rotary Drive which I know can be dangerous, but there are no other lekker climbs. I've even been attacked on top of Rotary Driver, although it wasn't on my bike - was just sitting there with my girlfriend at 5pm and three guys came up and surrounded us and I knew there's trouble when the one guy asked for taxi money... on top of a mountain...

Just past Onrust as you enter the Hermanus town zone from Cape Town, there is a neighbourhood on your L. That is Mount Pleasant as I remember.

On the main drag, one should be just fine. It is the isolated riding routes which can be high-risk for the riders.

What road did this take place on, and at what time? We rode through from Kleimond to Hermanus yesterday - the road was backed up with traffic from Onrus all the way to Hermanus, so I doubt it would be wise (for thugs) to do anything on the main road.
