Do you think a price matching service with the following conditions is a good idea? BTW, how many printed ads with prices have you seen lately.

- If you find an item in a competitor's printed ad that is priced lower than it is at our store, we will match or better the price.

- The competitor's ad must be local and current, and the the product must be the identical item, brand name, quantity and model number.

- Please show us the entire printed advertisement. Photos, photocopies or mobile phone versions of the ad cannnot be accepted as verification of competitive pricing.

Other exclusions are:

- Online prices

- Promotions or products advertised on another company's web or mobile sites, even those advertising in-store prices

Ha-Ha. I actually saw this yesterday. They wont have to match any prices EVER with all those terms and conditions. But atleast it looks good on the website.

I have used Cycle Lab's price matching policy twice during last year when I bought my Merida Scultura and my Merida 96 Team frame and saved a whopping R8000 in total. I supplied them with written quotes (no hassle and pulling out fine print), and not only did they beat the prices, they included other stuff such as a maintance plan, free bike build and some other odds and ends. Two awesome deals in one year. So when I pop into the Lab and sometimes have to pay R10 more for an item, I don't mind at all, cause these guys have save me a lot of moola, and offer a great service.

They did not save you R8000, they almost cheated you out of R8000. If you got it cheaper then the original quote then only would the "saving" part have started.

Nevertheless, these deals were both very sweet to me, as Cycle Lab, which is just up the road from me, opposed to the quotes from up-counrty dealers , saved me at lot of hassle and money, and included free service and other items. Will most definately use this policy again.

I was about to ask why you didnt just buy from the cheaper shop in the first place.

I agree with Mampara. if you had not received other quotes, they would have sold the bikes at the original prices. As you are an avid cyclist and know the estimate prices bikes and other stuff, what happens to the other novice cyclists that live probably closer to a cycle shop, and due to the convienance of the store they would shop at the store and pay extreme prices. (this is no direct hit to Cycle Lab and applies to all stores).

My opinion is using recommended retail pricing on bikes etc. smaller stuff pricing can be to the descretion of the LBS and the LBS should sell his name based on his service that he offers. Customer service is what we all want today.

I cannot understand why people use these offers, why must I go through the hassle to prove that your pricing is poor? Surely if someone is cheaper than another without you having to haggle, they then deserve your business?

Why not price fairly in the fisrt place?

What the ad is actually saying is"

"If you are too stupid to check pricing, we will happily screw you, but if you ask nicely and spend half your day conforming to our T&C's we wont screw you"

I must make it clear that I did not start this thread as an attack on CL (that is why I left their name out) but rather to highlight the fine print associated with matching prices.

Yeah, if you've taken the time to compare prices at a couple of shops, just buy the thing at the cheapest place.

Why do they want us to do the leg work and then they still get the bussiness...I will buy it from the place who gives me the best price from the get go.

If they can offer it at that price then they should do so from the start and not only when proven that there is a better price out there.

I call for a price and then I go to the cheapest to collect....

Would also go to the best priced store/LBS without going back to the store offering to beat any price. If they were so confident in their buying prowess and their ability to price products fairly from the outset they should be able to offer the "best price" from the outset to the general customer without (As previously noted) having the Client first shop around to prove to them they are priced too high.

I also never ask for discount, but will obviously accept this if it is offered.

The stores I frequent now usually give me discount out of their own.

What I have found is that if you phone around and haggle a little you can really pick up a bargain. Cycle shops do not like being told that you can get X cheaper if you buy it at Y....

The Silverback that we purchased is a great example... was quoted R8900 by X and purchased it for R7400 at Y...
