If I want to build up my own set of wheels, what are the components I would need to look for? I have no idea about sizing, fittings, centre lock, 6 bolt - all new to me. I have a Morewood Zula.

I have a set of wheels on my bike but looking for something new and lighter. CRC has some good deals at the moment.

1. Rims 26" - what else should I look out for?

2. Hubs - any specific details I need to consider?

3. Spokes

4. Rotors

5. Cassette

yeah been there, done that! good fun and very rewarding. I got quite of lot of the info from the hub but here's a summary:

- Go with 6 bolt rotors, much more universal

- Hope hubs are made so well and are the biz, CWC relatively good price, but lots of others out there.

- Stans No Tube rims are great, light and, quite a few options, check their web site. You can order from them.

- Spokes length needs to be calculated, you need also sorts of dimensions of the hubs and rims, and spoke pattern. I got DT Swiss spokes from CRC

- You will need a wheel truing rig of sorts

There is a wheelset in the for sale section with Crest rims, Chris king hubs and rotors. They sell for less than R5000. Take a good long hard look at them.

Every component of the wheel can be discussed.

Nipples: Brass or alu. 12 or 14mm?

Rims: Light rims, heavier more robust rims, tubeless rims, eyelets etc.

Spokes: Double butted, Revo's, Comps, Supercomps bladed. You even get titanium spokes.

Hubs: Price, seals, 6 bolt etc

Front hub: regular quick release, 15mm, Maxle

Spoke count: 24, 28, 32, 36...

Read up on the net. There are lots of wheelbuilding websites. Also different opinions. The trick is to try to see through all the crap written into the truth.

Do you want to build them yourself? Many well known wheelbuilders have taught themselves. Just one word of advice. Don't start your first wheel with fancy stuff like 1.8mm Revos, aluminum nipples and low spoke counts.

Easiets way is to attend a JB course.

I have both XT and am classics

the xt's are about 300grams heavier and more bullet proof both wheels are ust so no conversions and rim tape, tyre on stans in and inflate

my AM classics have a few dings but that partly betweem me and the dodgy floor pump gauge

my advice dont get white rims

only problem with the Xt is if they give any hassle it can be costly but if you maintain them you will have years of fun

I have put a buckle in each of them but to be honest the type of falls I've had I would have thought the wheels would have been totalled

The other thing is the XT are centre lock so I have adapters so that can also add to the weight only reason for the adapter is I find the XT rotor slightly thinner than avid and I seem to feel it

for a zula I would be inclined to go XT if you are doing a bit of trail, but for racing AM classics

also just make sure you rear hub comes with a free body. most do but just check. also make sure your thru axel on you front hub matches that of your front fork. if its a maxel or 15mm etc..
