I have the guts full of the exorbitant fees charged for cycle races.

I am sick and tired of continuously hearing about the fact that the entry fees "are going for a good cause to Sikolelao School or similar`" etc.

I am upset about the fact that I have to hear about how "costly" the organisation of such races are - never do anybody tell us what sponsorship and naming rights contribute to the race.

Now, to crown it all, when you do slip up and am late with the on-line entry, and EXTRA R 90,00 is levied - for instance with the Fast one? What does one get extra for that? Or, is it a slap on the wrist saying "Don't do that again"? At that price???

C'mon Cycling South Africa and all the Race Organisers - you are effectively KILLING the sport!

It also WON'T wash to say - "If you can't afford it, don't do it", as we WANT to keep the sport going.

But, heck - at these entry fees everybody is already cutting back!!! Some 4 - 5 years ago, everybody competed week after week, ..... now most probably only once a month if that much.

In closing this - look what happened to motor sport, rallying etc. The sport is kept alive by a small group of wealthy people ...... please don't do this to Cycling????

I've been in the lucky position to have most of my race entries sponsored. But if I had to pay for it myself there would be no way that I would have competed in the number of events i do now. It definitely seems that cycling is heading the route where you need an extremely healthy pay cheque to be able to compete. As if the equipment is not expensive enough already...

IRON MAN R4000!

I'll pay that any time for Ironman. Always excellent goody bags, pasta party, awards banguet, a whole weekend of 'fun', and excellent good looking medals. R70,000.00 price money for male and female winners.

What do you get at cycle races?

And then you do not get a seeding.... So if I miss the deadline, the race is dead to me...

Also, with running it generally works out cheaper to do a manual entry (even a manual pre entry at the local running shoe shop), as you do not have to pay the fee of the 'online entry' company.

The petrol price will help to kill the races.

Don't forget the petrol used to drive to CycleLab JHB to pick up a piece of paper, because you cannot pick it up on race day!

The IRON MAN race is very well sponsored, so if you look at that way your entry fee should be R10 because the amount of sponsorship money that goes into the race. Those sponsor money would most prob cover all the costs for the race to be organized PLUS prize money. This is what the topic is about... :)

R4000 for a goody bag, pasta party... ;)
