Help - What Saddle for Long Rides ?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I currently use a Selle Italia Thoork gel which is great and very comfortable (although I may be a bit heavy for it - I think). My problem is that once the ride time goes over three hours it gets extremely uncomfortable (Read PAIN !!!Cry) very fast. I initially thought it was just a case of waiting and allowing for some quality "bonding" time between my butt and saddle but with the DC coming up I am considering buying another saddle for loooonng rides.

Any ideas, suggestions etc   ?

Hey MD, you must be joking. I look at that and I just see PAIN !!!LOL

But then again, with your weight you wont even cause any flex in the saddle !Big%20smile

My perch of choice for ultra events is a Selle San Marco Rolls. I've used it on rides from my 10,5 km commute, to brevets from 200 to 600 km, to Paris-Brest. Which is to say, anything from half an hour to 2 1/2 days. Basically it's as comfortable after a couple of days in the saddle as it is when I started.

I have used a Selle Italia Turbo on a 300 km ride and was less happy with it than with the Rolls.

On my go-faster bike I use a Fizik Arione. In the few hundred km that I've used it, I've found it very comfortable; the longest ride was around 6 hours.

Whatever you choose, I've found it useful to get out of the saddle regularly to pedal standing up.

BTW, for comparison's sake I'm 1,7 and 75 kg. Of solid muscle and bone.

Hi Racman,

I did receive your PM and will answer that too. If you want comfort then go old school i.e. SSM Rolls, Regal or Concor. They are heavy, yes, they are ugly, yes, but they are damm comfortable. Have you ever wondered why the likes of Boonen, Bettini, Cadel Evans, Robbie Mc Ewen, Oscar Ferrie ride either the Regal of Concor, beacuse they are very comfortable saddles. Remember as well that the great LA was on a SSM Concor till the end of his career and I bet he still rides on one today.

The choice is very personal, but at 75-80kg I have never had a problem with my Arione.  Used it to ride the Etape in 2005 (7+ hours) and the 320km Habit ride (11+ hours) with no pain (in my butt that is).  I do regularly stand though to stretch my legs and give my back a break.

If you are having trouble with your saddle, just ride harder.  That way your legs take the brunt of the gravitational push and your butt will be fine on anything bar a stone seat.

Zaskar - why do you have a different saddle on your MTB? I've got a arione on my road, and was thinking of getting one for the MTB as well. Makes sense to me to have the same saddle on both bikes...

What is the price of an Arione ?

Scorpione - thx, will look at those SSM, and yes they are UGLY, but  I guess its about comfort.

Anyone had any experience with Specialized BG saddles?

Aroine price varies from shop to shop and from the top to the bottom of the range.  I think you can budget from anywhere around R700/900 for the bottom range (where is Joss when you need him) to about R2400/R3000 for the top range on.

I have heard so many mixed reports about the Fizik though. Some love and some hate the saddle. I am prepared to buy a new saddle but am reluctant to purchase something that won't work. And then I will have 2 uncomfortable saddlesBig%20smile

THE Aroine has to be worn in a bit, and it has to be set at the right angle, about 1 or 2% of horizontal to the ground.  (as the back triangle is a bit flaired)  BUt once you have the set up right, you have a long narrow saddle that gives you more sitting positions than a couch infront of DSTV.

This is probably an important consideration when you ride for more than two hours, as you have more place to squirm, and more contact places to distribute your weight.

Personally I'm not an Arione fan. Rode it didnt like. Its comfortable but I dont like the feel of the saddle. I'm a SLR worshipper....the best saddle ever!
