Waaaaay back when (the 80's) there was no such thing as USN and Fit and such like. Most use to ride on bananas or corn syrup as solids and a water and coke mixture (50:50) in the water bottle.

Been riding with Fit and Hammer Perpertum for a many years now (also the Epic) and still on the bananas.

I rode the 300 km Audax last week Sunday and after my 3rd bottle of Fit/Hammer I got gatvol of the taste and of mixing powders so I dared to venture back to coke and water. Drank a chocolate milky at every control point, with some raisins and "trail mix" (nuts and dried fruit) for solids, a banana now and then. Hours on the bike = ca. 11.

Worked like an absolute charm, no issues of energy drop/spiking at all. Bear in mind that Audax "races" are done at fairly low intensity. I rode my HT at and avg speed of 28 kph at an avg HR of 146.

Hope peeps can use this info.

300 km !!! ? Respect

Look how many people run the comrades marathon using simple stuff like coke n water and the other snacks like boiled potatoe with salt n butter, jelly babies provided along route.

Sometimes I think a lot of the 'claims' of modern supplements are merely marketing smoke and mirrors.

I tend to agree. Back to the basics is what we need. Even the famous AJ Muti mix is just a basic mix - the other guys just pimp it up with gold flakes to charge us a fortune.

Our maids son is into cricket and he was asking me what energy drink. I understand his budget constraint and his mom was dreading the weekly expense of Energades and such. Told him about the 1:1 Coke-H20 mix. I remember at school some of the athletic coaches would tell us to drink the mix.

Thx!!! I must be stupid or something!!! The next ride is 400 km. End Feb. When I think of it, my @ss get this funny twitch. Wonder why?biggrin.gif

BTW, I train so little nowadays that this is the only opportunity I have to force a few miles down my "throat" There is nothing that motivates one like a bit of competition!!!!

My brother-in-law is a conmrades athelete and is now training quite hard, and he dilutes cranberry juice and water 50-50 and put in a quarter teaspoon salt, and he says its working like a charm. Will be using that in a few races this year.

Is the teaspoon of salt for a 750ml bottle?

Scuse my ignorance here but do you have to make the coke flat first or just a straight forward mix with water?

Fair question.

I shaked the coke a bit to get rid of most of the fizz, otherwise your bottle gives you a nice blast of Coke when you open the tip to take a sip

Alternatively tried to pour the coke into the water bottle 1st, then added the water.

Also didn't bother with the fizz for a few bottles. Biggest issue was the surprised blast!! No ingestion issues.

Must say, a bit of fizz helps with the taste of the kinda "dull" mixture.

Next time I'm going to add a bit of "Klippies" to spice it up a bit biggrin.gif

In the road running world the coke served at water tables comes straight out of the bottle into a paper cup, usualy about half or less full, runners will then usualy then take a water sachet and squirt some water into the cup.

Simple and highly unprecise but it works for 10000'nds of runners.

Funny enough old mothers tale....Flat coke is usualy quite good for pep's with upset stomachs.
