This will probably only work for full carbon bikes....

The bike manufacturer should implant a chip into the frame simular than the one worn around your ankle. Alternatively you can get a second chip and hide it somewhere inside the frame. This chip should then be registered on your name and can be used as your time chip in races as well..

Now if the bike gets stolen then you contact racetec or whoever and they "flag" this chip. Come the next race nationally around South Africa and that chip crosses over the starting mat, the guys pick up the flag and know the bike has been stolen.

You will not fit a "tracker" to a bike cause it needs battery power but ultimately a bike is there to race so chipping it like this -- you will eventually get it back.

Eventually the crooks will figure this out and look for "chips" once stolen, but for the next say 18 months why cant this work??

Or am I just stupid?

why only full carbon? The manufacturers aren't specially going to embed the chip in a frame, they don't know where it will eventually be sold. Hide it somewhere in the frame? Where and how exactly? you can't exactly unscrew the top tube from the downtube and sling a chip in there, and any other accessible place will be too easy for the thiefs to find.

Well if the manuafacturers could "embed" the chips electronic label/ID to the bike somewhere it may work? I am sure its only a hologram?

That'a a whole other 50 page thread, keep focused on your idea man....

Why can't bikes have built in I'd's like pets. When my basset goes to the vet I gets scanned. Bike shops can also then scan bicycles when they are serviced? Its just an idea. There are is a chance of doing something here. Come experts give input

Might seem far fetched to some, but I reckon we'll something of the sort in the not too distant future. Take a read, answers most Q's that will be asked here. BaitBike

If you look at what bikes cost these days it justifies some research.

Plenty has been done on this already and some products are on the market already. Quite an obvious product but no one has been able to produce a simple, cheap and effective solution yet. Get it right and half of holland will buy one tomorrow. Do some google searching (and hub too, seen here before).

I'm no rf engineer, but I'm pretty sure carbon will shield your signals...its not really 'plastic'.you'd have to pull out an antenna of sorts

If you apply the chip to metal it does not work anymore. Thats why you wear it around the ankle. I have a carbon bike so I attached it to my frame and it gets picked up.

My chip is attached to my fork and it works just fine. I was told it wouldn't but I have never been without a time when I have used it. Ok it is not inside the fork!
