Sorry dude but this is not Egypt we are not talking major human rights violations, this is one guy who got screwed in a business transaction. Next time you get commissioned, and have to incur expenses, maybe you will have something in writing which I am gathering you don’t have.

Thought I feel sorry for you, I will be buying my Ride mag next month and the month after that and I look forward to the coverage of tour no matter who is writing it.

So I cant really see how this Thread is going to help you in any way.

Prove them wrong by not comissioning you in the forst place!!

I wonder whether the truth of the matter lies in this little sentence. Journo pitches story to editor, editor says it might be a good idea, but does not actually say let's do it, journo assumes it is on like donkey kong.

I guess the lesson is to get these kinds of agreements in writing? Does it work that way in the magazine world? Engineers/builders/architects etc - the sensible ones - won't start a job without written confirmation and, more often than not, an advance payment of sorts. Cyclojourno, did Adele confirm in writing that she wanted you to work on the Tour?

DEFINATELY not Ayoba!!

@cyclojourno....why not go freelance on this one? You've incurred expense already?

THEN if your article(s) are good someone will pay for them....

I'm in Johannesburg, I'm accredited so yeah I will be covering the tour. I have managed to attract one or two overseas publications and right now they are deciding on a fee...but could still go either way. I will be interviewing some of the big guns, shooting photos, publishing them on my blog and providing updates on twitter if nowhere else. To the other oke, Numbnuts I actually do have their agreement in writing, which is why the whole thing is so irretrievably stupid.

I'm a cyclist and I love cycling, but I find the politics and shenanigans around it by admin people counterproductive - it starts to sap your enthusiasm and the sport is better off without those who are just trying to make a buck at the expense of other people. The spirit of cycling is really about collaborating together so that everyone benefits. I wish that would filter a little bit through to a few of the kingpins, including in the media. But sport these days is a business...still, I'd like to believe business isn't just about greed, particularly the business of sport and sports' journalism.

I agree that there are 3 sides to a story always, so lets hear from Adele , anyone know her well enough to get her to comment?

Don't know her but do know that not every one considers the Hub 'that' important. Maybe Ride magazine will handle this in a 'legal' manner? Just saying ....

Howz this - about 5 hours before my Kulula flight to Johannesburg, Ride Magazine, who had commissioned me to do a feature and daily coverage on the Tour of SA, dropped me. I caught the flight anyway, since I've paid for my expenses upfront, and of course at the time they said they'd reimburse me my expenses. Called Adele Tait today and asked her if she's still going to honor the expenses I've incurred [included a flight to PE] - she wants to know why I flew up to early...which sounds like a no. I've told them I'm going to seek legal action if they don't honor at least the expenses that I was essentially tricked into paying...

I think the reason they reneged on the deal was initially CSA only seemed to want a core group of accredited media [i was one], but later they invited and are still inviting everyone. So I think Ride saw an opportunity to save a few bucks by ditching me at the last moment. Turns out the editor herself applied for accreditation on the day that they gave me the finger. Oulik ne!

Flame on

Jeez buddy, it didn't dawn on you that this is a public forum!? Not the brightest thing to be posting for the world to read methinks - can you spell blacklist and/or class action? Buy hey, whatever gives you wood...

It was discussed privately, then the threat of legal action was ignored, then the threat of social media action was ignored. So when you've been tricked into spending your own moolah...you kinda need to be innovative in finding something to show for it. Ride obviously think it is worth the risk. Maybe it is. Maybe crime and corruption does pay, because you can screw somebody over and nobody cares?

Cool man, not for me to tell you how to approach this. Just giving my viewpoint, which I genuinely hope is constructive, even though my approach would be different.

Whatever the case, I do hope you guys get things sorted.

Shall see you at the Tour then, beers on you :D
