On Sunday the talented Colombian Daniel Martinez finished a fine seventh overall in the Volta a Catalunya. Now, two days later, the EF Education First rider is in hospital in Italy after being assaulted by a motorist.

According to Cicloweb, the 21 year old was training with compatriots Julián Cardona, Miguel Eduardo Florez and Kristian Yustre when they almost crashed due to a car. Reports suggest that Martinez shouted at the driver, who then emerged from the car and beat him.
