Hi there,

I privately sponsor a talented school boy who has shown incredible talent and dedication to MTB racing. He has just been invited to cycle for SA in the up coming international in March and July with his aim on representing SA in the olympic team.

I need to buy him an appropriate bike to give him the best chance of doing this discipline XC racing.

He is 61kg 1.88m tall and has an in seam of 85cm!! He rides an XL frame.

26' Ht?

26' Dual?

or 29' HT?

my vote is for a light 26" dual. the new dual suspension technologies minimize pedal bob a lot, and the extra traction and ride comfort that the dualie gives is good.

I'm sure the vote will be 29er HT perfect height definite racing snake potential if not then 26 HT the racing guys I know are all 29 er HT the only thing might be strength issues and bike handling which may be why 26 would be the way to go

bottomline you would want a sub10kg bike at least, tricky in XL on a dual

Budget? 29ers are going to come at a premium ....

You only really need rear suspension for downhill mountain action as I see it (feel it), my rear lockout of my Scalpel often inadvertently slips into action and I rarely notice.

And yea, good on you there m8 for doing what you are doing.

Yep need to have an idea of your budget before everyone can throw in the two cents.

i'd go for a 26HT though...perhaps a scale, zaskar or lightweight alu meteore.

Is the 29er not better suited to flatter less technical disciplines?

Cross country is very intense and technical?

Seeing as though you are doing great things for local riding talent, why not keep the lad home grown and happy with a Morewood Kwela 26?

I imagine tire range may be easier to find for 26'?

Parts, something robust and easy to service...maybe keep it a 9 speed to keep running costs in check?

Go on you mate for sponsoring a local lad - I am sure he will do you and SA proud!
