Maybe CSA should bring in outside help.

 

Isnt that guy from ASA looking for a job? Somebody Cheune? Could help with organizing, PR and general image. Also useful for those transgender issues.

it's now been 100% established that CSA CAN NOT organise cycling events....the best they can do is to pay for events to be organised by PROFESSIONALS on their behalf....... :(

You tell them MooToo - once again the hubbers act as judge jury and executioner (spelling) most of you f@##$%^s really amaze me - never mind how many members of clubs put up their hands to volunteer - How many hubbers came forward - Instead of spending time posting **** on the hub why don't you donate 1 day to CSA and help the sport you claim to love so much. The only thing that shocks me more than what happened on the stage today is most of your dumbass chirps on this post - today i am embaressed to be a hubber.

 

I was in one of the team cars, and saw motorists of all races disobeying the marshalls and police. How often do you see people throwing litter and stompies out of their cars and do nothing? How many of us jump red lights on out bikes and our card, etc etc. South Africans are to blame for what happened today. A call was made by CSA to assist with the Tour, how many of us put up our hands?

My 2 cents:

 

 

Has a rolling road closure ever been done before in JHB on that route ?

 

In my mind a practice run should have been attempted first to identify any potential problems.

 

If it proved to be too troublesome, then the route should have been changed.

 

We all know how well respected our road rules are by followed by law abiding citizens.

A staff member told me that there was no advertising regarding the tour on Thursday, a minute later, behold, on 94.7 an ad regarding the Tour of SA. Please check Fridays Star, page 3 regarding the Tour including a map. If you have entered any races this year via Cyclelab, you would have noticed a Cell C Tour of South Africa link. ATTENTION TO DETAIL! What else do you want?

You're missing my point.

Cyclists know about the Tour of SA, the problem is that the vast majority of the affected population are not cyclists. Why is a non-cyclist in Soweto expected to access the Cyclelab website to get the info.

Adverts three days before the race are not sufficient. What happens if you couldn't listen to Highveld on Thursday and don't read the Star. You need to cover mulitple media sources on multiple days and you need to do it weeks in advance of the event. Especially if the event is new and will affect a large number of people.

In summary it was mentioned on SC show, a link on CL entry site and Friday prior to the race a notice in the Star.

 

Now why did the all the people of greater Jhb not know there was a race on. :unsure:

The criticism is pretty reasonable imo.

Of course there's a bit of letting off steam with the disappointment of the thing, but a lot of very simple objective things have been said here.

CSA took on the job & made a complete mess of it.

Just a few comments:

 

1) I am a member of one of the clubs that responded to the call, at very short notice, to provide marshalls along the route yesterday and today. Of all the clubs in Central Gauteng Cycling only 3 provided any marshalls and most of those were from a club in Soweto. Yes it is unnaceptable to expect clubs to respond at such short notice but surely we could have done better?

 

2) Yesterday Stage 1 was controlled entirely by Tshwane Metro who seemed to have done a very good job of controlling the roads. Having said that they only had a very short piece of road (Cedar and Witkoppen) to control bringing the race into Johannesburg.

 

3) The method of operation was that the Metro cops secured an intersection before handing it over to a Think Bike Marshall or stationary marshall and then rolling through to the next intersection. The roads were closed for all through traffic and traffic from front and back until the last rider and sweep had passed.

 

4) Today we stationed ourselves on Sandton Drive at the corner of Alice Lane near Sandton City. From what I saw there were just as many Metro Cops and Think Bike marshalls as yesterday. Some Metro Cops did not seem to know the route and asked us which way the route went. We were assisted in securing the intersection by several Think Bike marshalls and with a few exceptions motorists were fairly patient and well behaved.

 

5) The problem seemed to be caused by traffic already in the route ahead of the race which could not be cleared before the race got to the backup. This would indicate that full road closure would have been the only way to run this route. Having said that I doubt motorists would have tolerated full road closure for 2-3 hours on a Sunday afternoon on such major roads.

 

6) I might be wrong but the way I read the story about the Metro Cops "disappearing" was that it only happened once the race had been officially stopped i.e. the riders and race convoy was left to fend for itself to get back to Monte Casino from Sandton. This is also inexcusable but is different to what is being protrayed about them deserting the race whilst it was still in progress.

 

Certainly the major blame has to be laid at the feet of the race organisers but I think there were lots of contributing factors which have to be taken into account.

ROAD RESTRICTIONS FOR THE CELL C TOUR OF SOUTH AFRICA

 

GAUTENG ROAD RESTRICTIONS – 20TH FEBRUARY

 

The Cell C Tour of South Africa would like to forewarn drivers in the Gauteng and Tshwane areas about traffic congestion and road restrictions that will affect travellers during the Inaugural Tour of South Africa.

 

Please familiarise yourself with the map of Stage 2 of the event to ascertain the best route to travel prior to leaving home. The map is accompanied by a detailed road schedule and estimated time frame of when restrictions can be expected. The details for each stage may be found under the stages section for your convenience.

 

We are alerting you to the routes early with the intent of causing as little inconvenience as possible in relation to the Cell C Tour of South Africa.

Please note that these are rolling road restrictions and not total road closure, so you will be delayed in bursts of anything from 10 minutes to 45 minutes pending on the routes you choose.

 

Maybe we should have it in 11 official languages

 

Why discriminate and stop at the 11 official languages, other languages spoken and mentioned in the Constitution are the Khoi, Nama and San languages, sign language, Arabic, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Portuguese, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telegu and Urdu. There are also a few indigenous creoles and pidgins......

This is one of the dumbest posts I have read on the Hub - and that says a lot.

 

If the Clubs had have been asked for volunteers, what could they have done to prevent the cock up in organisation? Would you have liked us to lie in front of the taxis? Take our pumps and beat on the naughty motorists' windows? 2000 volunteers would have helped jack ****...

 

Secondly, the Clubs were asked to help: by advertising the route to their members and getting them to support on the road. I was there. I bet IanJ and his tCS crew were camping outside Monte from last night. Other clubs were there, too I have read. Ali Mclean sent emails SMSes and tweets to the point of distraction to the 4000+ Cycle Lab members - I bet a lot were on the road waiting.

 

I was.

 

The only problem was I didn't see a single ****ing cyclist due to CSA's stuff up. I'm p.o.d.

 

Where were you, with your high and mighty morals? At home I frikkin' bet...

Motorists spitting at marshalls & threating their lives

 

That was me, my bike rider didn't notice but as we went past motorists on Witkoppen one hacked at spitball at me, a few seconds after a loud "**** YOU" from another and a guy who played chicken with us.

Later I saw one guy try to intimidate a marshall by driving straight at him, nearly knocking him down.

No argument made here or anywhere else justifies those actions, eff all! It's an absolutely disgusting display from people!

These weren't taxi drivers either, but people in rather affluent cars.

The officials, marshals, CSA, SAPS and JMPD on the ground worked themselves to bone!

 

Why is it the stage from Pretoria to Monte was such a success and people were well behaved overall?

 

No doubt there are a number issues to be dealt with, but at the end of the day the absolutely foul behavior of a few is what caused this.

I say a few, because there many people stopped in their cars and bystanders who were really enthused at the fact there was an international tour with 14 odd nations taking part.

 

Theres still 6 days to go yet and some spectacular racing across the country, which I'm sure will be met with enthuasim and success, that's my feeling. I refuse to let today's pigs put a damper on the occasion!
