Ratty....I disagree. The Tour de France goes through all the nice places in France. So does the Giro.

Small countries like Mauritius have proven many times that with enought RESPECT from the local community you can take cyclist through ANYWHERE without issues.

As for SAFFAS.......the only way those idiots in their cars were going to successfully blocked off was if the national CRICKET or RUGBY team were passing in a parade....Cyclists?....lets go kill them.

All said and done, lets keep this thread positive and focused on stage 3 etc.

I really wonder why the folk of South Africa would really target cyslists. We are such a well behaved group that obeys traffic rules all the time. Do not ride all over the road, do not skip red traffic lights and never oh never will stiff middle finger other road users.

Now why would road user be negative towards us...... maybe ..... just maybe the fault does not lie with CSA and can be found uncomfortably closer at home.

By the way keep on writing positive things..... they read so well

Perhaps that's the answer? Get the cricket players to distract the public away from the route and the rugby players to enforce the road cosure. Soccer players can be used to amuse the crowd to prevent mob anger.

Lets talk about the race rather than make excuses for crap driving.

I'm sitting patiently at the top of Military rd( King of Mountain) and not a spectator in sight. They are about 20 mins away. There was at least 500 ppl at this spot for the SAs, just proves that nobody is interested in this event. Its a pity.

No more bickering from me. New day, new chapter

I'm with you, Scotty.

I am holding positive vibes that this event can teach the watermark of success.

Come on, CSA!!

I heard the interview about stage 2 yesterday. Reason for taking it through centre of Jhb was so that we can showcase our history etc. What a load of bull. You chose the route that is best for the cyclists, not the one that takes them past the most tourist attracations.

that's not entirely true, if you were to race in Paris would you like to go down the Champs Elysees or past the Eifel Tower or down some silly boring 'safe road'? ok JHB is no Paris, Madrid or Rome but it has aspects that are unique that international people will appreciate because it isn't familiar to them. i met some of the international guys last night and they were saying that cars getting onto the route is not impossible in Europe, it happens often apparently! Showcasing the key parts of our country is part of the goal of the Tour, it is the FIRST tour of it's kind in SA! i think we need to chill and give CSA a break! They have a lot of professional, international, people helping with the organisation etc

i say cuddo's to CSA for taking on a project of this MAGNITUDE!! next year will be better, and the year after that, and the year after that..

all went well in PE by the way!!

Cuddo's -

I disagree how we can applaud mediocrity, are we so used to poor performance that we as South Africans actually applaud it???

This was supposed to be a planned event – one which will attract cyclists to our shores

At this rate it’s an embarrassment...

It is totally unacceptable to make crappy excuses like – we want to show case our culture... blah blah etc

What utter B.S. – we are too used to making excuses for poor performance in S.A

I am shocked by the events in day 1; 2 –

How can we expect to be an attraction to top teams if we can't get a few road closure issues sorted??

Just my 2cents –

Now u can all start hammering me -

I am disappointed, no matter what gets said…..

If I expected to be rewarded for crappy performance I would be " without" work...

The first TDF definitely did not endeavour to showcase France. Only in later years when it became a firm favourite did they start showcasing. Showcasing any new tour with very little publicity, public awareness and acceptance is risking the entire future and sustainability of that fledgling tour........ And the Eiffel Tower was only 12 years old when the first TdF was run and everybody hated it then because it spoiled the skyline of Paris.

Stage 3 went off well, no mishaps...........the riders even got to see a few elephant and zebra next to the side of the road. That is pretty cool for the riders. Not sure what would have happened if jumbo took a dislike to these skinny guys on 2 wheels.
