  1. Picked this up off the Classicrendezvous mailing list. Puts today's prices in perspective. 1951 Campy Gran Sport, currently on Ebay at $5 800. http://tinyurl.com/25euuw Note: price doesn't include the shift lever. Or the box. These are being sold separately. Come out, Oom H, wherever you are... pbp20072007-10-19 07:43:57
  2. Don't be shy, Cervelo. Tell us how you really feel.
  3. I'd like to get an answer to this as well. (I've been using the Rockets since August.) Does it depend on how many washings? How many hours' use? Or just... "It depends?" I see that some of the stitching is starting to come loose near the bottom of one leg and a little hole has opened up.
  4. Like water off a duck's back. Or, as Justice Erasmus was supposed to have said, "Off my back like a duck's water." Here's another: "ad hominem". Or, in a style more appropriate to this thread, playing the man and not the ball. Typical.
  5. And of course perception is everything. QED.
  6. I haven't even begun to make judgments. Merely pointed out absurdities.
  7. I read it on the Hub, so it must be true.<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> ?The bok team that will be the last true representatives of our proud country.? ?You can prove to the selectors that you ARE the best regardless of your skin colour, you will likely get chosen.? ?Black people don't play that much rugby.? ?In general in our country white guys aren't as good in soccer.? ?The guys are on top and are the best players.? ?The players are all there because they ARE the best we have to offer.? ?Hoeveel Afrika lande het spanne in die rugby w?reldbeker toernooi gehad? Clearly, factual correctness is not necessarily a prerequisite for posting.
  8. If you just want to measure the route you could do it from your PC with appropriate software (Garmap SA Streetmaps is what I use). No profiles, though. For that you need to travel the route and record your track. The Garmin models mentioned above are fine - even my 301 is OK. But it might be more practical to have a proper recreational model ... try sending Mountain Lion a pm. He's da man.
  9. What do you mean by a speed profile, Hagar? Casspir: you mentioned pace. Why are you using pace instead of speed... are you a runner? Just asking.
  10. One of our riders a couple of years ago did only spinning as training, plus one long ride over the course of a weekend (N1 city - Worcester - back). He completed the DC. And I'm talking Ceres. On a borrowed bike. With a 42x23T low gear. And ancient 700 x 20 tyres. And DT shifters. OK, we were last. And it took 11 and a half hours. But he finished.
  11. The funds are raised as a direct result of cycling. Sounds to me like ploughing back.
  12. Out of those I have used, it is THE most awesome piece of training software. My 0,00001 c worth. * FR301+SportTracks since September 2005.
  13. Either take it back to your dealer or contact Garmin distributors Avnic Trading Tel +27 21 7889015 about backup.
  14. Sounds similar to what ended my P-B-P. My symptoms: stabbing pain when bending at the knee, localised around the edge of the kneecap. Discomfort if I keep my leg in one position for more than a few minutes, especially with bent knee. This may be just overuse or tiredness, but I would have it checked. Also search the Internet for "runner's knee".
  15. Actually my first hate: I didn't want a bike at all, but I found a burgundy-coloured BSA under the Christmas tree in 1965. Single-speed, of course. When I outgrew that it turned into a s/h Rudge, chrome finish. Talk about bling. By early high school that had been upgraded by the addition of an "osgear". Now there's a word that brings back memories of valve tubing. I guess my first true love was the Raleigh International I bought with my vac earnings in Harvard Square, Mass, in the early 1970s. Magical summer nights in Cambridge. I had to leave it behind and didn't own a bike again until a s/h Hansom in 1998 that carried me to several Argi. The ones I love now are my '82 Gios Super Record and Steady Eddy (Merckx Corsa Extra, my steed in PBP2007). And of course the screaming yellow Lejeune 753 that looks fast even standing still and carried me to my best Argus times, now in honorable retirement on the IDT.
  16. sorry, don't know how Adolf did. For perspective: Jan Heine (publisher of Vintage Bicycle Quarterly) finished in 48 hours subject to confirmation, quite likely the first American and in the top 30. He was riding unsupported on an Alex Singer. A picture of the bike shows him with just a big handlebar bag that looks like it could be a Berthoud. the bike itself is a classic rando-style machine with old-style components (DT shifters, for instance), Mafac centrepulls and 650 B wheels with what looks like 38 profile tyres. Respect.
  17. So my PBP ended on a country road outside Loudeac, in watery sunshine, 450 km from the finish line. A nagging ache in my left knee that had started earlier in the day became an agonising jolt of pain with every pedal stroke. The decision to quit, when it came, was easy: all I had left to me was one good leg. As we lined up for the start (10.30 pm wave) the rain came lashing down and persisted for much of the rest of my ride. All the way to Brest it was like blundering head-on into one of the Cape's finest winter northwest storms. People I spoke to during and after PBP agreed that the conditions were horrendous. Still, you play the hand you get dealt. Results haven't been confirmed, but from what I hear there was a high attrition rate. At the finish on one official laptop that was constantly being updated I saw around 3 000 finishers out of 5 300 with about an hour to go. SA representative Eddie Thomlinson told me at the finish that he'd heard many of our riders had quit. It was a similar story from riders of other nationalities. The Cape Town contingent lost 2 out of 3 at Loudeac (450 km) and I managed to keep going until 780 km. But I'll be back... Note: One-legged drills up the Champs Elysees in the evening rush hour are not to be recommended. Note to Holy Roller: I met Marlene from Benoni on the train back to Paris. We shared a comfy, warm compartment with about 10 other riders who'd also had enough. She said she stopped when she realised that she was running out of time at controls. A couple of youngsters with her (Tanya and Adolf, I think) continued.
  18. Any chance of meeting up in Paris, Grant? I see Eddie Thomlinson is trying to organise a photo for scrutineering at 9.30, but the Cape Town contingent is due there only at 2 and we're meeting a friend at 2.30 anyway. We're in the 90-hour crowd ("Start 2") at 9.30 on Monday. You'll recognise me by my cycling shirt, which looks like the SA flag stood on end. Whatever, bonne route.
  19. Mtn Lion is correct as usual with respect to * Mapsource not being free per se. It's free if you already have a Garmin mapping product. I gather it's being bundled with current Garmins. * Mapsource not being able to produce profiles from ROUTES but only from pre-recorded TRACKS (in SA, at any rate). * The Africa Topo map being designed more for a map-capable GPS. Agreed, but it's still useful in Mapsource. Once you have a route, select Africa Topo as your map background; with even a rudimentary knowledge of contours you can "read" your route profile. If you want, create some waypoints for towns, landmarks, etc so that they show up along with your route, for context, when you have selected Africa Topo. By the way, Hagar, note that in Sporttracks you can view your track on 1. Satellite pic 2. Google streets 3. your own custom map. pbp20072007-08-02 07:32:51
  20. Mountain Lion is waaaay too modest. I bought the full 1:50 000 topo series on special offer when it first came out and believe me, even at the regular price it's a steal. Konafan: thanks for the file size correction. What DO they put in this software? My first PC had a 20 MB hard drive... and I've still got my TRS-80 with a massive 32 kb of RAM. Cycling content: plotted a profile for the Double Century in Ceres using a 1:50 000 topo map and immediately wished I hadn't. Anybody remember Swaarmoed?
  21. What he said. PS: Mountain Lion, that 1:50 000 topo stuff of yours is good sh!t... it feels almost as good as fondling an actual paper map.
  22. The Edge and Forerunner, being capable of intepreting a GPS signal and also capable of having routes and waypoints uploaded, are by definition navigation devices. I have used my FR301 to navigate in various parts of the world, using waypoints and routes. They don't do turn-by-turn navigation like the bigger units, but they can route you from waypoint to waypoint, with an arrow showing your required bearing plus the time and distance remaining. This is elementary stuff. Slowjoe wrote: >actually the gps estimates height as well It doesn't estimate height, it calculates height based on trilateration. Minimum of 3 satellites for a 2D fix, minimum of 4 for a 3D fix. It's accurate to within 10 m on a good day. The Edge has a built-in barometric altimeter, as far as I know. The other posters are correct WRT not being able to generate profiles. There are a couple of good suggestions among the replies. One more: download Mapsource from Garmin.com if you haven't already got it. It's a free download, but at about 25 MB you will need broadband. Hagar, PM me if you would like some help. pbp20072007-08-02 06:11:15
