  1. Another data point: I have been using my Forerunner 301 since March 2005. About two years of that has been without the rubber plug for the USB port. I use it for running' date=' riding and walking, in the rain and in the dry. No problem with water ingress. It lives on a proper Garmin handlebar mount. By the way, the Garmin also has a 1m/30 min rating, if I'm not mistaken. Im trying to get garmin courses in a thread in training' date=' but nobody is responding. Maybe some oaks even have courses for some of the popular races ? [/quote'] I've collected a library of my tracks that I am trying to put together on my web space on Mweb. The list includes the Argus, Double Century, many of the fun rides around Cape Town, all our Cape Town audax rides from 200 to 600, most of the climbs around Cape Town including Franschhoek, Du Toits and Sir Lowry's, local training routes, a few half marathons and for good measure the Paris marathon. There's lots more. These are all in .gpx format, I think. They can be viewed in Mapsource (Garmin) or in Sportracks from Zonefivesoftware. ... and if the gods smile on me, by the end of this month I'll also have Paris-Brest-Paris. So, watch this space.

If there a solution? You could build yourself a portable double AA cell charger like I did: http://www.ladyada.net/make/minty/index.html (Similar units are available in pre-built form from accessory manufacturers.) Worked fine on audax rides up to 600 km/40 hours. I am also trying out a solarpouch: http://www.flexopower.com/products.php

  5. I vaguely remember the fwd system, but while I rack my brains here's a link to an idea for a rwd system http://www.popularmechanics.co.za/content/Greatstuff/singlepage.asp?fid=270

  7. Oh, dat fing. That's the way the pic uploaded. The original looks fine. Both rear wheels intact, on the display and outside. Preferred it with all 4 wheels lit up on the Ouberg Pass, though. pbp20072007-05-24 08:48:06

No problems for the next 80-odd km here and back: Bike content: MTB had already done its work for the day and was resting in the back of the car.
  9. How's this for a coincidence (also yesterday morning): Taken down the road from here:

Since 2005 I have been using a Forerunner 301 for running, riding, walking, flying, driving... the 305 series is more ergonomic, but I honestly can't say that I find the 301 to be a problem on my wrist. It looks bulky, but weighs just a couple of ounces - that's about 50-60g for the under-25s. Mode-switching at transition shouldn't take more than 3-5 seconds. For duathlon, start in Running mode. At transition, press Mode button for a second or two; when Mode menu appears press Up or Down arrow button to go to Cycling, and you're good to go. The entire workout is captured as a Multisport session. For triathlon, start in Other mode. Continue pretty much as above. (For me, continue swimming until the sweep boat arrives, because I've missed the cutoff.)
  11. I've experienced the dreaded Look Squeak with three different models, all of them using the correct cleat. New cleats will help... for a while. Lubricant (including spit) will work... for a while. The most effective was some silicone-based stuff, but then again it felt like I was constantly about to slip out of the cleat. On the other hand, if you want to drive your riding partners crazy, nothing beats The Squeak, especially when it mutates into The Creak.
  12. >bunch of inconsiderate roadies What he said. Although, to be fair, they're swamped by inconsiderate car, taxi, bus, and truck drivers. >OWNERS OF THE ROAD : Cars and trucks... You are squatters on the road, not the owners, as a cyclist you pay no tax to have it maintained....... Er... WRONG.
  13. For what it's worth, my review: https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=749&KW=garmin Garmin 301 since March 2005 Sportracks since September 2005 pbp20072007-03-16 10:04:40

You need to get Sporttracks, Carnac. racman wrote: >Garmin Edge looks very bulky Maybe not an issue if it's on the bike. The Forerunner 305 (not Edge) has better ergonomics than its 301 predecessor, but feels bulkier. I ride with the 301 on a bike mount, and run with it on my wrist. It really doesn't get in the way. All in all it's a fantastic piece of equipment.
  15. If you want the stuff that Polars do, then you may as well get a Polar. If you want that plus GPS and mapping, get the Garmin. TitusTi: you pay R100 to register with Sa-active and then you can claim points for racing (riding, running, swimming, etc). There is a 15 000 maximum plus 5 000 bonus for completing 5 events. (You can get really hung up on the points thing.) By the way, you're not allowed to score these points AND Virgin Active gym points as well. The Polar points are an extra. I would be interested to know if Discovery allows users to accumulate Polar points and activity/gym/race points.
  16. Here are a couple of profile comparisons from my pre-Garmin days. <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> I plotted these in Excel from a 1:50 000 topo map.
  17. The official PPA profile... just a little misleading. Make that a lot. This mofo had the never-ending Theronsberg both ways, and then Swaarmoed to crush whatever spirit you thought you had left.
  18. erm... Wavering between hyperventilation and hysterical laughter, it's occurred to me that I may just inhabit a separate universe, one that doesn't include sunglasses that cost more than my entire last season's BIKE. ... er, I go with the D'Arcs. Just think, if you lose a pair in a crash you've still got half your budget left. On the other hand, with the alternatives suggested here (erm... about R600?) you would not only look cool (debatable) and see better (yeah, right) you would climb faster thanks to your wallet being considerably lighter.
  19. Note that the wind for Cape Point shows "fresh south west". On weathersa.co.za, click on the Western Cape region on the map, then under "7-day detailed forecast for Western Cape regions" select from the drop-down menu 1. Cape Peninsula 2. Cape Point 3. Slangkop You will need to register to get long-range forecasts.
  20. I'll send you my 2006 Argus track when I get home this evening. It should be possible to convert this to *.gpx, *.gdb and *.hst formats, as far as I can recall.
  21. the link is garbled. Try https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_topics.asp?FID=21
  22. Chris414, if I remember right you've got a Garmin 305. For interest, replace the HRM belt battery and see if the readings are still similar. Several users of the original FR301 belt experienced spikes and dropouts. A fresh battery usually helped. I believe newer models have a better belt, but you never know.
  23. Somebody's wide awake... When your HRM belt is not taut or in the correct position - say, when you roll over - there is the possibility of a spike or dropout. Chris414, looks like you're using SportTracks (?) I take it you know that, in SportTracks, HR (and altitude) spikes can be edited out.
