  1. Once again a very well organized and tough race.Congrats to the CHOC guys and everyone who supported a cause. I was one that cycled in the intense heat,it was sheer murder. It was probably the major cause of my cramping. The waterpoints were excellent and the support along the way was truly fantastic. Coming from the coast I found the altitude an issue. All in all,my issues had nothing to do with the organization etc.I big thank you to everyone who marshalled/helped at waterpoints etc etc.
  2. Hope the bike is insured as it will be a gonna real soon .....
  3. I was at the official Amarok launch in PE yesterday and was taking it for a test drive along the Schoenies road when I came up behind 2 female cyclists on a bit of a climb. They were cycling behind each other when all of a sudden the one that was at the back decided to pull over into the middle of the road and presumably ride next to the other cyclist. I ended up missing her by centimetres. What a dumb thing to do,this sort of thing is what gives us a bad name and will get a few killed. If you are one of those woman cyclists (around 1030 AM yesterday),consider yourself admonished and WAKE UP ! By the way,the Amarok is great.
  4. You better run and cycle hills a lot and practice in the heat of the day as it gets hot in EL. I would suggest you use a wetsuit for the swim. You better also swim a bit in the sea as it is very different from a pool. You will enjoy the day if you go prepared.
  5. There are a lot of hills,so practice running and cycling up hills.Do a lot of brick sessions so your body gets used to the changes. The heat can also get you down so train in the heat as often as possible. Get used to getting a rhythm and pace yourself accordingly.Do not try surge and ease off etc.Do not think that the cycle and run are shortish so you can go like crazy,it is a very tough route. Enjoy
  6. Most cyclists in PE do greet each other BUT the guys on their tri bikes aren't as friendly.
  7. RIP our fellow cyclist.Very sad news indeed.
  8. Having had 2 spinal fusions,I know all about lower back pain. The important ingredients to help are obviously the set up (start conservatively)/good saddle/strong core muscles and hamstrings and then don't push too hard until your body gets used to cycling at a particular speed. Cycling uphills are the real killer,so get into a rhythm and don't push too hard.
  9. The PE Masters and Ladies Club season kicks off on Friday with a family ride of 11km's-I'll be taking my wife and 10 year old (up from Cape Town)> On Saturday they have a gentle 46 km race.First time I'll be on my road bike in a while after sticking to the mtb over the past few months. Should be fun
  10. I am looking to buy a mtb for my wife and just wanted to know if anyone might have any views on which bike to buy ie Giant Anthem 2 OR Scott Scale 40 ?
  11. I had a small procedure a few days back and am taking anti biotics. The dr and the pharmacist said it is best not to exercise but if you really want to,then only do something light !
  12. As I am wanting to sell my Raleigh RM8,size large to a mate, I am trying to establish a fair price so we are both satisfied.Does anyone know what it could be worth ? I bought it in 2008.
  13. Does anyone have the contact number/s for the 2nd hand bike shop in Sherwood P.E. please ? I cannot seem to find it when I "google" it . Please drop me a line on selwyn.gill@standardbank.co.za
  14. My wife is into Ironman etc so I have no problem going out for a ride.In fact I enjoy it more if she rides with me-which is seldom as she is stronger than me (2 spinal fusions does that to one)
  15. I agree, not a great first attempt at all BUT let's give them a chance and see how it goes.
  16. At my level of cycling, having sex the night before will have no influence the next day - except having a smile on my dial !
  17. My wife and 3 other cyclists were doing their morning ride about 10 days back in the dark with heavy mist (yes I know, very silly) when they had an accident- came across a t-junction which they only saw very late. On breaking hard my wife went over her handlebars, head first onto the tar road. She was knocked out completely for about 5 minutes, frothing at the mouth with convulsions etc. She was rushed to hospital with her head a mass of blood. She ended up with 11 stitches on her head. She is a bit better now but still suffers from headaches, depth perception problems with sight and even gets confused with spelling. She has always been extremely strong on having a good helmet, fortunately so,as she would have had much more serious injuries and/or even might not be with us any longer.A big thanks therefore to the Giro Atmos that saved her. The best thing about this helmet is that they have a warranty whereby if you have a crash and it is cracked etc,you trade it in for a new one at about 25pc of the purchase price. Fellow cyclists, never ever save a few rand by going for a cheap helmet,it can save your life.
  18. I am a very mediocre mountain biker but considering doing the above race.I have done the Knysna Oyster 50 km race twice around 3.40. How does the K2C compare to say the Knysna race ? Any comments would be much appreciated.
  19. Fattracks club arranged a 2 day event for the folks wanting to do the trans-Baviaans over the past week end. They also arranged a short night ride on Saturday evening and a 45km ride for those not doing the longer event. The event was extremely well organized and a very speacial thanks must go to Errol Black and team, they did a fantastic job. Where my "rant" comes in, is that the shorter distance was very poorly supported. All too often I hear gripes that our club does not arrange enough races at different venues etc, then we get a poor turn out like this. To those that did not make it,the weather was sublime, camping great, venue was excellent and the ride challenging. All in all you missed something special.
  20. Great looking Specialized but not too sure about the red seatpost
  21. I would like to purchase 2 pairs please Chris, one for the wife and one for myself. How do we go about it ?
  22. I have never done this race/ride but am told that it is mainly gravel roads and jeep track.I am sure there are a number of tough climbs so I would think that you must do a fair bit of hill training and then "time in the saddle".You don't say how long it took to complete the Knysna 50 km but I would add on a couple of hours at least. You need to get your body used to being on the saddle for hours on end. Enjoy
  23. As much as most of us enjoy single track,my personal opinion is that a lot of races are now including too much.It is all very well for the better riders but more than 50 pc of the field are just average to below average. I also wonder if organizers don't look for the most difficult route they can-again fine for the better riders. The race is to cater for all of us,even us that push up the rear.Don't get me wrong,it must not be easy but try and cater for those of us still trying to improve ie don't chase the newbies away. Just my 5 cents worth
  24. Cool will do.We have to do something before it gets out of hand.
  25. So true but one feels so darn helpless.Thank goodness her Ironman training days are over !
