  1. I have always used a Polar watch with a strap and a magnet on the wheel but having recently bought a 29er and changing the settings on the watch each time I ride a different bike is a pain (wheel size). I am therefore wanting to buy a Garmin or something similar that rather works on satelite's and therefore not having to change the settings all the time. I am not the most computer literate person around so would like something fairly easy to use and can indicate speed, distance, time, profile of your ride etc.Can anyone suggest/recommend which unit I should go for. I guess this topic might have been covered before,so please forgive me in advance.
  2. I heard an interesting development from a cycling buddie yesterday that some of you might want to consider before spending money on a new 29er (like me...lol).He says that he believes that some 26er's will be able to use the new 27er wheels (is it 27 or 27.5 !). One might have to make a slight adjustment but it will cost a lot less than buying a brand new 29er.If this proves to be true,it might be worth the wait. As a matter of interest,I am thoroughly enjoying my Scott 29er,there is no doubt it is faster and more comfortable than my 26er.I have had no problems on the technical stuff but cycled in our bike park in PE yesterday (Norm Hudlin) and found a few of the tight corners a bit tricky. This could simply be because it is the first time I have used it in this type of terrain. For my level of skill and ability,I am over the moon with it.
  3. You might also want to try Velotex in PE,contact Sharon Holmes on 0833428306
  4. My wife has tried about 8 different saddles over time on her MTB but simply cannot find the "right" one for her.She has extreme pain from the "sore" areas that she can barely cycle now. Can any female mtb'er give us any advice as we simply have to resolve the problem as she cannot go on like this. She is going to demo a Fizike Tundra (spelling ! ) which hopefully will help BUT just in case, your input would be greatly appreciated. I might mention that she is a tri-athlete and road biker as well,so she is not a novice to the sport.
  5. You might want to try Time Clothing in East London, ask for Sharon Keogh
  6. Sounds like it is Tony's Appliances.... will pop around later. Thanks to everyone for your comments/suggestions
  7. I live in the Friendly City of Port Elizabeth
  8. I'm looking to buy a coffee making machine but don't know much about them.Could anyone please give me some advice on brands and what I should look out for in terms of their offering. Ideally I want a "foamer" included and obviously one that can change the strength of the coffee. My budget would be around R2500.
  9. I thought it is illegal to have price fixing on the sale of goods in our country. If this is the case why is it that both Polar and Go-pro prices are all the same wherever you try and buy the product ! I can understand if prices are similar from one store/shop to another BUT to be exactly the same, surely not.
  10. I previously had a Merida 26 dual suspension which was ok but I decided to go the 29er route and ended up buying the Scott expert carbon dual suspension.I have ridden it twice now, including in last Saturday's Tsitsikamma race and found it BRILLIANT to ride. I am by no means a good cyclist but due to spinal fusions I need a comfortable ride and found the new bike really good.I had no problem on the technical sections and definately climbed better. I am not suggesting everyone should go this route but thought I would just share my personal experience. As suggested in earlier posts,it might be better to try both out as you don't want to regret your purchase when it is too late. Your budget will obviously play a role as well. Good luck
  11. The above race is open to entries but unfortunately it only has a 55km and 18km ride, that is,nothing in between. Has anyone done this one before and if so,how does it compare to to the Knysna oyster 60km/Tsitsikamma 42 km/Addo 60km etc OR is it more difficult ? On their site they suggest the longer one is "tough", I would like to do it as I don't want to drive from Port Elizabeth to Alexandria (Near Port Alfred) for 18km's. I would appreciate any comments please.
  12. I have had 2 spinal fusions with screws, rods etc & I am cycling again.Whilst I cannot ride as well as before at least I am on the bike. Clearly one must be cautious but then again, even with a normal back one has to be. Give it time and start slowly, good luck
  13. My wife and I hit the road later this afternoon, sleeping in Knysna and hope to arrive in CT before lunch tomorrow. Whilst the wife will be looking for a time anything between 2.59 and 3.10 (depending on all the usual issues),I will be pushing up the rear in my Bumble Bee Foundation kit. If someone wants to start a thread tomorrow about the road conditions, where the speed traps are,stop/go spots etc,it would help all of us driving through I hope everyone has a fantastic ride and the wind stays away
  14. The split time calculator I have has the following for a 3.15 ARGUS- Total dist Time to point Top of Edinburgh drive 11.3 21m Top of Boyes drive 27.1 48m Jubilee sq Simonstown 39.2 1,05m Cape point nature reserve-Smitswinkel 51.8 1,31 Soetwater (8th water table) 65.5 1,52 Turn at Sun Valley to Noordhoek 73,6 2,06 Top of Chappies 82,8 2,25 Top of Suikerbossie 93,8 2,49 Finish at Greenpoint 110 3,15 Hope this helps-adjust slightly for the 3 hour barrier
  15. When driving home yesterday I arrived at the scene just after a cyclist had been knocked over.Needless to say I was rather concerned about the “poor” chap BUT I now read this article on the MYPE site – “This afternoon at roughly 16:20, a group of Tow Truck drivers found a cyclist that had been involved in a accident on the corner of Trichard and Diaz Roads, Parsons Hill. They summoned the police and emergency services, who arrived promptly. Whilst the police were at the scene, they received a call of a house breaking in Hartley Street, Parsons Hill, not far away, which they proceeded to. It wasn’t long before the police returned and confirmed their suspicions as, in a cruel twist of fate for our hapless cyclist, he was confirmed as the miscreant who had stolen the Hartley Street bicycle. Only the bicycle was confirmed as being taken out of the garage by the suspect. The bicycle was returned to its owner and the suspect taken to hospital, with a fractured leg. God works in mysterious ways! “ He is now being cared for in hospital at the taxpayer’s cost L
  16. I use USN cramp block as well as Rehydrate in my bottles.I also take Rennies with and start taking if/when the twinges start. More training in the first place will be the best answer.
  17. I think it is fantastic that she is getting so involved in cycling.I am not sure if she intends doing the entire ride or just a portion as she has not been cycling long.Whatever the case,I hope she has a fantastic ride and gets the support she deserves. If only some of the other politicians did the same, they might lose weight and save some lives by getting cycling lanes built.
  18. I am sure this question has already been asked but I cannot find it anywhere,is Boyes Drive included in the Argus this year or not ! The map on the Cycletour site is not clear and the print is too small. Thanks
  19. I suffered with cramps for MANY years before discovering that Lipitor (for cholestrol) can give you cramps.I changed medication to Cresto and hey presto,no more cramps.I think the best is to make sure you train hard enough. I use Cramp Block,Rennies and Rehydrate in my bottles which all help as well.
  20. A sad day in many respects but you reap what you sow !
  21. Maitlands in both directions, the Wall,Welcome ave,the 3 sisters,Old Seaview rd,the climb up from Schoenies,5k hill from Seaview...... if you do these climbs on a regular basis you won't have a problem with the ARGUS. The Masters club race this coming weekend will give you a good taste,it starts off at the Fairview race course. You will climb Maitland,5k hill up from Seaview,3 Sisters,to name a few. Good luck, have fun
  22. As far as I am concerned,if you ride in a bunch, whether male or female, you should take your turn up front.Unfortunately there are thousands of cyclists that will never take their turn but very happy to sit in the bunch.
  23. Congrats to James Perry (2.27) and Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (3.04) on winning the men's and ladies races yesterday.Quite amazing how no one wanted to really work from Maitland back to the beachfront, due to the easterly blowing. All in all,a well organised event with good spectator support along the way. I personally suffered through the entire ride due to extreme back pain The mtb race in Addo proved to be extremely muddy and wet (as expected)-going to be lots of business for the bike shops this week
  24. I wear a Ferrari watch bought at the Ferrari shop in London last year BUT use my Polar for cycling of course
  25. Thank goodness I only entered the 105 km road race this year as the conditions at the mtb event are going to be very wet and muddy. The race is usually tough but a good test, however, with all this rain,it is not going to be too much fun.
