  1. now THERE'S an idea i guess the downhill of about 4 km vertical descent would be a little painfull on a unicycle?
  2. matie, that's already part of the planing - i'm gonna wear all the heavey stuff - luckily it's winter here, so i should not look too funny with polar-fleece pants with rain-pants over it, and down jacket - but stuff like sleeping bag and wet-weather and cold-weather gear will quickly fill up the available allowance, so if there are cheap ways to get the bike lighter, it would mean that i would have space to take extras, in stead of just the bear necessities
  3. k, so i'm flying my bike to the himalayas later in the year qatar allows 20 kg's checked in, and 7kg hand luggage. bought a bathroom scale, weighed the bike. it's 15 kgs. That's bike alone, without any packaging. (unexpected discovery: the hardtail and the trance weighs exactly the same) Question: How do I get the bike lighter? it's a hardtail, alum frame. - it has disk brakes on; i will still have the vbrakes somewhere, would it be worth anything to swap disks for v-brakes? - currently it's got tubes. is tubeless lighter? (and take into account that i'm technologically challenged, so need to be able to get the tyres to required pressure on the other side) any other ideas on where i can make a big difference with a small change?
GMF!!! cat-i2010-02-07 10:00:17
  5. the bike that you feel most comfortable on - see if you can get a demo-model to go ride a place like groenkloof, and see which one feels best?
  6. lots of time to recover before s2c .... just stay off your bike for now - listen to the doc and maybe you can ride all 3 days ...
  7. dassie, you go that way in the mornings? what time? i'm the one with the big red backpack on the well-abused hardtail - say hi next time!
  8. am rifing the spruit, but to rosebank, not from it. geeez, is it a marsh at the moment!!!! wnt down conrad this morning to avoid the swamy bits at the top of delta park - but the bitsies at the bottom was even worse parking the bike in the office (on carpets) so can't have it dripping with mud when i arrive there ...

    Hub rides

I'm doff keen on a night ride at Groenkloof. I've been wanting to start/join/hijack night rides at Groenies ever since the 24 hour race last year. I just haven't spotted anything on the hub yet. DR' date=' please fill a brotha in on your night rides. Canaris, please keep us posted on what you get organised. [/quote'] mux - this thursday at the moo mall - that one in irene with the cows. ready to ride at 19:00. they usually park their cars on the spur side. this week's a 45 that includes all the best climbs, a gnarly-ish downhill or 2 and some awesome speed zones.

    Hub rides

'WE' have night rides, dirty? when last have you been to one of those? it's an innocent question, i haven't been there for about a year, so won't know if you'd made a celebrity appearance how about this week? it's the 45 kay rock&roll, always a favourite and worth the drive from jozi
  11. slave! i thought of you this morning! rode at that muddy zoo-farm place close by your house this morning. the last time i was there, you and the slavedriver came to say hi after a roadie-ride .... was sending 'get-well-vibes' your way this morning - did you get them, and did they help?

    "Rip off"

hahaha i got new tyre out of the deal, the other had 20 plugs and was 6 months old ... so i don't care how they did it
  13. it's been a favourite. very sad news - thinking of you, jaco and the indunas
  14. hey ricky and slave and ianj - thinking of you guys, get well soon!!! and keep posting (good) news about the recoveries ...
  15. 13.5 kays each way, but sometimes longer depending on the swampy-ness of the spruit and the darkness of the hail clouds. it's only 10 by car, but that's on tar and the swamps are far nicer and traffic-free cat-i2010-01-21 14:06:45

    "Rip off"

i've had another good experience with my bike shop .... took both wheels in for re-stans'ing it. back tyre - kenda karma - about 6 months old but still perfectly working. left it there to come pick up the next day. the kenda bursted overnight, apparently a big mess in the workshop. so they do a warranty replacement and i get a brandnew tyre and only pay for the stans
  17. R as well
  18. did ride2rhodes last year in capestorm matrix - there were some pretty long days, but no bum-issues. haven't owned assos ever (prefer to spend rather the money on adventures) so can't compare , though ...
