  1. Sometimes there's unexpected school holidays ... so traffic flows (even in Sandton) and car is faster or a week or sometimes two. And you can sleep slightly later in the mornings. Then one morning you sit for 30 minutes in the queue by Benmore Gardens again to move 500 m while the taxis jump the queue in the oncoming lane again. Traffic's back. So I'm back on the bike
  2. There's bike washes, lube stations, great food (not just carbs), massage stations at joberg2c, sani2c, 3towers, kalahari challege. And lots of (free) wine and great food at desert knights. And if you were going to become the next Gunn-rita then you would have done these events anyway. As an alternative to a spa day (or -weekend) this sounds great. To try to get more women into the sport: maybe that wasn't the target anyway. But pedi's and mani's and leasurely rides through vinyards? Sounds absolutely great as a girls weekend away: get a few girlfriends together to celebrate graduating or for a kitchen tea or a 40th birthday party. If that was the intention then this sounds great.
  3. On the whole of Joberg2C Solly's Folly was easily the best piece of track. Envious that I wont do it in Berg&Bush ... enjoy!
  4. Less time - only 3 years. But the crime is equally bad - both cases the offenders were extremely reckless. Both should have foreseen the outcome.
  5. Let me rephrase that: how many people need to die before the reckless driving would change?
  6. 6 years, 3 of which suspended for 5 years. 3 years. Not much, but it's something. Not sure how that will affect the driving of other taxis. Here in Sandton it seems like nothing is being done ... does someone have to die for something to happen?
  7. 6 years.
  8. Sounds like prisone sentence. Can't help but feeling some sympathy for the taxi driver - other taxi drivers gets away with blatantly ignoring the rules of the road daily ...
  9. mike bradley ‏@mikesmaverick 59s59 seconds ago #burrystandertrial court find direct imprisonment is only suitable sentence. prevalence, consequences, gross negligence, not excercising...
  10. whahaha of course! Those shoes would be so slippery on flat pedals - this is brilliant! I prefer to shower at the office though - so won't have to do this anytime soon
  11. The Joburg sunset just started the earliest 2 weeks of the season ... sun is returning after the June long weekend http://www.saao.ac.za/public/viewing-the-sky/sun/sun-rise-and-set-times-for-places-in-south-africa/johannesburg-sunrise-and-sunset-times-for-2015/
  12. Those coming out of Sandton towards William Nicol stop at red lights. Probably will get killed if they dont. On the way in to Sandton, at the Republic/William nicol crossing, very few cyclists wait for the light to turn green from Republic side - all just go when the light turns green for shopping-centre-traffic. Like the taxis
  13. I have the fenix 1. On the bike I'm using it with an old Suunto bar-mount and it works fine. Screen is big enough for me to see everything I need (Used it for joBerg2C navigation too). I got it because I could use the same unit for cycling, running and hiking in the Berg - which works very well for me. It doesn't have a touch-screen or other fancy features that I've seen on the garmin bike-units, but for my purposes it works brilliantly.
  14. From joBerg, so just any old weekend may be difficult. But with same advance notice and careful planning it may be possible to make a plan ... rode a bit there in December, and would love any excuse to go back there.
  15. Some of them looks very much like Sanddrift trails. Great pictures!
  16. Loved the challenge. A brilliant idea to give people a challenge, rather than just a pure lucky draw. Loved that you had to do a bit more than usual, but that it was doable. Great journey! Would have loved the entry. Please, Isuzu, do something similar again next year!
  17. You were in my mathematics class at Stellenbosch many many (many) moons ago. Trust you to get the mathematics right on this one - you always were the bright one!
  18. Was very excited when I read this - learnt to mountainbike in George many many years ago, and would have loved to see some of the old trails again. In my mind it always was a significant mountain biking destination. The entry fee of R8900 per team for 3 days of riding without accommodation is probably very much on par with what other events (wines2whales, sani2c?) are charging. The days of doing 2 or 3 stage races per year are over - as are the days of using one stage race to train for the next one. Very sadly I'm not the target market anymore When did mountainbiking became such an exclusive sport?
  19. From behind, yes. It's at the bottom of a short downhill. There's a road joining from the left where cars sometimes turn in there without looking out for bicycles. I usually go down there slow to be able to stop if a left-turning car cuts me off. He was coming from behind at a great speed - with not enough space to pass between me and the cars. So the danger could come from other bicycles too - who are equally vulnerable - and therefore I expected them to be equally awake. Apparently not It's just an elbow. Doc said it should be ok to start riding by Tuesday if there's no infection before then. And very lucky this didn't happen a day or 2 before joBerg2C - I would have been seriously grumpy!
  20. Got taken out this morning ... by a BICYCLE. Dude came speeding down the hill, didn't leave enough space for himself between the cars and me when he passed me - and then took both of us out. Very lucky that the cars reacted so quickly to miss us both. Also very lucky that this was only the third incident in 16 years of commuting - it could have been a car (or a buffalo), and something broken instead of just 3 stitches. Worst part is that I'll have to deal with Sandton traffic by car for a week or so
  21. I have a fenix and the other half has a fenix2. Both are awesome devices ... and due to JoBerg2C, we're learning more about them every day. Going by the history, the Fenix3 should be impressive.
  22. Was very lucky to be able to ride with the Epic Daytrippers on stage 5 of the Epic. We climbed this hill early on Thursday morning and waited at the top for the riders to come past. Corinne Sauser (the mom) happened to be in that group; here she is cheering the team on.
