  1. You hit the nail on the head Edman, when I'm racing I want two things: Elapsed time and Distance, everything else is really irrelevant and like you point out a distraction, I'll occasionally check my Heart Rate when I'm hammering it or maybe chasing a break down so that I can watch that I dont end up bonking later on in the ride but generally your body tells you when you're pushing too hard and you should be able to pick this up without an electronic device.
  2. I agree with you, I never said HR is not important nor did I say cadence wasn't but given the option I would opt for HR. The point I was making is as an amateur cyclist most of these things are nice to haves not need to haves, I dont have cadence or power meter output (apart from on my IDT) and I dont think I'm a worse cyclist for it, would I like it? hell yeah, would I be a better cyclist if I had this? probably not. I always ride with my cellphone in my jersey, have even had a crash with it and have never had any problems with my phone, so yeah, I recon the bag trick works.
  3. Technically speaking, a device does not have to have an IP65 rating to be waterproof, an IP65 rating means the device can be submerged up to a depth of 1 meter without leaking, dont think this is a requirement for the average road cyclist, put your cellphone in a plastic bag and problem solved. I ride a cheapo CS200 that gives me speed, distance & HR and I'm able to ride at a very competitive level and the last thing on my mind is that I'll get dropped and then have to ride with a group that catches me, if I had all the fancy stuff you ride with and this was one of my concerns, I'd probably look at another sport to be honest. In my opinion, for the average amateur cyclist cadence and power reading is nice but not essential, unless you're a pro cyclists you dont need all the fancy stuff, the fact that you can do the mapping etc... in a cellphone is brilliant as far as I'm concerned, especially if it costs you nothing to do this.
  4. Just like guys shouldn't do pink martini's bikes shouldn't have saddle bags, its just not cool, keep it real
  5. CSA's main drive is to create bigger bunches so that amongst other things our elite riders are used to these conditions when they ride abroad, they are wrecking all the other categories to achieve this, what a load of hog!! CSA should be concentrating on getting our elites to race much longer races, where in the world does a paid pro cyclist do a 100km race? why not concentrate on development cycling and perhaps use that as the avenue to increase bunch sizes. If you are a vet and manage to or want to put a team together, you'll get eaten alive by the elites who are training so much more than a vet who has a day job so whats the point? it would seem that the new rules are affecting the vets 30-39 category the most and in my opinion is killing the category.
  6. I think its absolutely nuts to do this on SA roads, hit a pothole or bump in the road in that position and you're going down hard, agree with Mampara though, if you have the old Shimano Sti's then you have a little more control but I still cringe when I see guys riding in that position, perhaps I've gone soft from hitting the tar at 60KPH earlier this year, the tiny aero advantage you gain from that position cannot be justified for the risk in my opinion.
  7. I have Assos, Giordana and First Accent shorts, the Assos are nice but not worth the money IMO, the Giordana's are great and relatively well priced, I dont like the First Accent bibs at all, I have a Castelli jersey and the fit is amazing so would imagine that their shorts are good too, planning on getting some from CWC, their prices are really good but they dont have all of the sizes in stock anymore. The Italian bibs are generally a smaller fit than the local ones so if you're for example a medium you'd probably want to get a large. So my vote would be Giordana.
  8. You Peanut Butter Junkies would probably have loved the Banana & Peanut butter smoothie recipe in the Bicycling magazine this month then.... had it a few times, YUM YUM
  9. There's a couple of PDF's floating around on the net with the general torque settings for carbon bikes, dont have the time to search Google now but if someone comes across it or has it maybe post a link here, you'd have a lot of grateful hubbers
  10. Yup, realise that mate, just thought that someone would know offhand, I'll get hold of them and post the results. Buycycle also have one but a bit pricey and only goes up to 15Nm.
  11. I've just noticed that the BBB only goes up to 24Nm! Looks like they've got the "Mighty Torque Wrench" in stock though, same specs as the BBB
  12. I was actually going to post a wanted add this morning for a torque wrench, pity CWC is out of stock on the BBB, anyone know when they'll be getting more stock or where else we can get one? other option is if we can get enough guys together lets put an order in with Chain Reaction? or if someone is selling their BBB I'll take it
  13. Or maybe he was trying to take Lange's medical aid
  14. Anyone know whats up with Malcolm Lange's tweet about Douglas Ryder? "LangeMalcolm Douglas Ryder pls destroy your own sponsors and stay away from mine! Chop! 1 day ago via ÜberTwitter"
  15. You can get Original team replica kits off CWC from about R1200 (made by Castelli), to me its a no brainer, pay the extra 40% and get the real deal, if you're paying R850 for a complete kit then accept the fact that its probably not going to be the best quality! Perhaps you want a cheap training kit? Or maybe you're a cheap skate and don't want to pay the full price? either way at the end of the day its your decision, in the long run, these cheap deals often end up costing you more one way or another. I'm not commenting on the actions of any individual here, just stating what I find to be the obvious. It would be great if there were a buyer / seller rating system like they use on Bid Or Buy, it would change the dynamics of this website, perhaps the site admin could look at getting this development done?
  16. Hi Guys I've popped it onto our website so that whoever wants it can download it. Click here to download it
  17. keep riding, just try ride lighter gears and check that your bike setup is correct, this is often the culprit.
  18. Club ride tomorrow morning at 6am, hill climb intervals Saturday and then Campus2Campus Sunday. Probably not a good idea to do hills before a 105km race but using C2C more as a fast paced training ride.
  19. I can see this thread turning into a heated debate I think its hard to say one groupset is better than the next, I guess it comes down to what you prefer. I've ridden Record, Dura Ace and SRAM Red this season and for me the clear winner was SRAM by a long shot. Another big plus with SRAM is that both your up and down shifting is controlled with one lever which can be pulled back without applying the brakes, handy for when you're in a sprint and need to change gears either up or down, both Dura Ace and Campy cant really do this (well they can but you only get to shift down unless you change your hand position in the sprint which is not ideal) Having said that though, I still think there's only one groupset for a Bianchi and thats Campag without a doubt, the two were made for each other.
  20. I have a removable towbar and use the Thule Xpress, didnt need to have the bumper cut. the BMW in Bedfordview organised it for me, not sure who they use but maybe call them, 011 201 0000 PM me if you need more info. Oh BTW Mine, isnt coupe, its 4 doors, but I cant see that changing anything.
  21. Ok, all my questions have been answered now, thanks, Wheelsuck, sorry about the hijack
  22. RED. Yeah, I know it will work but will the SRAM cassette be better or is there no difference? Thanks.
  23. I know its slightly off topic, but given the choice (barring price) should a SRAM cassette be chosen over a Shimano cassette on a SRAM system? reason I'm asking is that I have SRAM but also have 2 brand new Dura Ace cassette's and dont want them to go to waste so to speak.
  24. *chuckle*
  25. Where abouts do you stay? there are a couple of groups riding in that area in the mornings, My mate and I meet up with a couple of riders on Van Riebeek (in Edenvale) in the mornings, anytime from 4am to 5am depending on how far we're going then generally ride through to East Rand Mall and then hook up with the TDF riders.
