  1. This is exaclty the problem I have. I had a cheap(er) Manitou Markhor fork, really liked it. Then I upgraded to a RS Reba. Just not the same and I blame the setup. I can't find the sweet spot.

This is my second Reba, the first one was fine, not much better than the Manitou. I am actually considering a Markhor again. Don't think I would actually do it, but maybe.

I went from a Fox to a RS Reba, worst decision of my life. I just can’t get that fork to come close to feeling as nice and plush as the Fox did. I have had it serviced and checked multiple times, always thought there was something wrong with it. Every time I’m told everything is in order and working as it should.

Definitely going back to Fox when the budget allows.

  2. So wondering what everyone's cockpit setup is for the race?

I have a small conundrum. I run the Farr aero extensions because i like the extra hand positions. Would like to mount both my Garmin and light on the end of the aero bar, but finding the correct mount is not easy.

I cant run my Garmin 520 on my stem because it's battery wont last the race and the charge port is not accessible when running it on my stem.

Are aero extensions allowed? Just asking because I looked at the rules and they mention the below in the rules:

No dropped handle bars or aero bars will be allowed. This rule will be strictly enforced and riders who fail to comply will lead to disqualification.

I don't want to rock up at the race only to be told that you can't have those on your bike.

  3. Ag shame Billygoat... cry us a river. Maybe you should consider ice skating then the lights will all be on the same time for everyone?

I will be beyond pissed off if we loose access to the trails because of someone who thinks he does not have to abide by the rules, just because he has a "marshal" board on his handlebar.

So until someone who's involved with the management/building of the trails says marshals are allowed to ride before sunrise/after sunset with lights - they need to abide by the same rules.

  4. The race for the win!

i'm sure someone with better excel skills can make this look sexier.

interesting i see former Munga winner Hein Visser found his tent at 3am and never emerged again, or did he do a final lap?

Spoke to him yesterday. He got a puncture on the first lap (porcupine "spike") through the back tyre. Then he got another puncture on the 19th lap quite far from the start/finish, so he had to run the remaining loop back to the start/finish area. After fixing the puncture he got going again but once riding, he said his Achilles tendon was very painful, and his lower back muscles went into spasm. Attempting to run in cycling shoes while pushing a bike was obviously not a great idea. He decided to call it quits after that lap because he did not want to add another injury to his ever growing list. I'm not sure if he was in the lead at that point, could have been. Maybe somebody can confirm? He didn't train for the race and only found out about it last Wednesday.

  5. You are wrong once again, those pictures are within a group on Facebook where these people gave their consent and is protected by copyrights. On Facebook these people are also not being battered.

You have actually stolen these pictures and then battered these people without their consent and or knowledge.

As i said your ego seems to be bigger than your IQ.

    Battered? Bloody hell..... Exaggerating much?

  6. China - obscure in the context of, apart from families and friends of those riding, plus the hub population representatives, I would be surprised (although I don’t know) of many others watched or followed the race. Their YouTube channel is not really used and they hardly have a massive social media presence. My point was more about them not riding for our entertainment.

Frankly, if they chose to ride across the lines whilst gently fondling each other’s testicles, having decided to do so 6 weeks before, then that is their business. Do you think that they are riding to entertain you somehow?

Please point me in the direction where I said they were there to entertain?

I have made my point very clear. I will say it one last time: Calling a truce 80km's from the finish is a joke.

It seems one cannot, or may not have an opinion on the matter, if you've never been there before (according to mr Shaper).

  7. You were not there, you do not know what these guys have gone through, you have no idea of the dynamics of the situation. Take your itchy nuts and get on the start line to appreciate, else take your comfy armchair watching elsewhere next year if it's that much of an issue for you!!

Been there twice before, thank you very much. Perhaps you need to take some of your own advice, before assuming I have no idea what they have gone through, or of the "situation".

  8. What a laugh. Okes moaning because the leaders of an obscure event that only us really watches decided to finish together.

If this was a grand tour, with tens of millions invested into sponsorship, tv rights, prize money etc, then maybe we would have a right to judge, but to bitch and moan about the result of some tiny, largely unknown event in SA as if the riders somehow owe you entertainment is just ludicrous. Those guys owe us nothing. They paid their entry, they did the training, they bought their bikes, they made time to be there. As far as I know, neither of them were paid to be there. What they choose to do or not is **** all to do with the rest of us.

Yes, so obscure that some of the top endurance racers from overseas are racing it. I'm sure Alex Harris will appreciate that comment.

Ultra-Endurance racing has never been a mainstream sport, most probably never will be.

I don't give a rats ass if they held hands singing khumbaya while crossing the finish line together. What grates my nuts is that the decision was made with 80km's still to race. Whoever brought it up in the first place, smells of someone who's afraid of coming second/loosing. The fact that it was accepted by the other party pretty much says the same.

  9. You ever ridden 1076km on less than 2h sleep? You might not like it as a spectator but I can understand why they came to the arrangement.

And to an earlier point; arrangements finishing have been made in professional road racing as well. Just ask Vino

The question needs to be asked when that "arrangement" was made? Looks like it could've been at the Tankwa Padstal already.

There's plenty opportunity left to win from there. Hell, even with 1km to go to the top of Bainskloof someone could've made the race winning move/attack. There is not a snowballs chance in hell, if both of them tried their utmost to win it right until the very end, that they would've crossed the finish line together.

Even Mr Munga, Alex Harris himself was involved in a 3-way sprint for 3rd place during the TDR. After almost 4400km's they didn't decide to roll over the line together for a 3 man joint 3rd place!

  10. So over 1000km and 55 hours of sister kissing!

Any thoughts on which of the two made the suggestion to roll over the finish line together? One of them must've made it first.

  11. It seems that Benky is hammering it now. Please don't crash. Push it! Up the tempo!

    Nail biting stuff

    Edit.... nevermind.... stupid crap trackers...

There is nothing left to "hammer" at this point in time. They will most probably wait until they get as close to the turn off from the pass, before giving whatever they have left, to get on the track first.
  12. For that reason I'm avoiding the R44 like the plaque - we ride it (by car) every day and the things we see there makes me not want to be on that stretch of road with a bike during commute times. Ironically my biggest concern is my afternoon ride in the daylight - cars and more pedestrians. When I come in, most will be asleep.

    What Christie said.

You can skip the R44. Take R101, left onto Elsenburg Road. Over railway crossing, right to the train station. Take the service road along side the railway line until you get to Kromme Rhee road. Take a right there and at traffic light cross over onto Bottelary Road, left at the traffic circle. Up and over Devon Valley onto Adam Tas into Stellenbosch.

There is currently road works on Devon Valley road with stop and goes. I commute there daily, just use the closed off side to ride. Adam Tas can be very busy but the traffic is generally slow moving. The traffic should be much better in December.

  13. The winner from last year also gets a free entry, so It's not like Ramses paid to be there......

Is it really R18000 per rider to enter?! Sheesh....

I would love to give this a crack but at this stage R18000 for a few days riding is well beyond my ability to justify.

"Early bird" entry was R18K, after that it went up to R22K. Not sure until what date the early bird entry fee was applicable.

  14. maybe lost in translation perhaps.

it's just the way he said it in his post.....of being 30 min ahead of the competition etc etc as in "i was murdering them and they weren't going to beat me but the heat beat me instead"

I think there was mention of going for the record (which he holds). He obviously had that goal in mind.

In a race like this the conditions (heat, wind, road surface, etc) is the biggest factor that determines a fast time, or not. Given the conditions you have to adjust your goals accordingly. It doesn't matter how fit you are, or how well you prepared, if the weather conditions does not play along the record will be out of the question.

Surely he could've made that judgement call and realized it's probably not going to happen. Rather re-adjust your goal and say i'm still going to try and win this. Ride more conservatively. The heat is going to kill me if I try and continue at this pace - which it did.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to look at the times set vs the weather conditions of past years.

2016 - Heatwave, ridiculous head wind for the whole race.

2017 - Cool temp even with some light rain, tail wind from the start. Probably as good as you can wish for.

2018 - Hotter than 2017 but no heatwave.

2019 - Heatwave. Not sure what the wind is like out there.

  15. I think H is babysitting and with Chris you never know till the start. He is often never on the list, but just pops in to ride for a laugh.

I bumped into HV at a coffee shop, in the area where he works, a few weeks ago. He said he tried but just couldn't get the training rides in that he needed. Just wasn't possible with the baby. He also said that he could not justify spending the money on a race (Entry, travelling, accomodation for two, etc. Probably more than R30K) with a baby to take care of.

  16. The gpx file contains all the waypoints. Depending on your device, you could have a field that show distance to the next waypoint. That waypoint can ge anything, the top of a climb, for example.

All depends what you find useful.

  17. The best tip I ever recieved was:

Sutherland is half way. Maybe not on km. But SUTHERLAND IS HALF WAY.

Ride within yourself and dont burn too many matches till then.

What are you on about? It's all downhill from Sutherland.  :whistling:

  18. The newsletter they just sent out is getting me excited to start dotwatching again!! One day I really want to do the Munga when funds and time allows it...

"This year for the first time will see us hit the 150 mark as almost 160 odd riders line up to battle the heat and wind of the Karoo! So who do we think the top contenders are...

For starters Ramses Bekkenk has to be the outright favourite although no Munga champion has yet successfully defended his title! An ominous stat. Ramses has to defy four years of race history to change this. His blistering ride of last year is going to be hard to beat. Then what about the 2017 winner Marco Martins! Yes, he is back after battling with a bug last year and pulling out around the 800km mark. I have also been in contact with John Ntuli who was keen to race, but who knows! Other exciting news is that Jean Biermans is back after succumbing to the heat in 2016. In fact, you can contribute to Jean's fund raising effort by clicking here. It's going to be frantic out front.

Doesn't seem like they are giving any of the locals a chance? No mention at all...

  19. Seeing as you're on gravel bikes, why not ride out to Greyton? Have some breakfast and come back.

Should be 75 odd km's to Greyton (150km total) via mixture of tar and gravel roads. Franschhoek Pass -> Draaiberg road (gravel) -> R43 (tar) left onto Helderstroom Road (tar which becomes gravel once you go past the prison) -> Middelplaas Road (gravel which becomes tar before you get to Genadendal) -> Left onto R406 to Greyton (tar).

  20. Sounds like you might just enjoy this - go for it!

Just trying to draw some kind of comparison to rides that I have done. I know it's not like for like, just to get an idea, more or less.

Most endurance events are more of a mental battle than a physical battle, from my own experience.
