  1. I don't know how big the downhill bike market is but it seems very niche to me. Stands to reason that development of 29ers would start in the biggest market first. That does not mean that they will be better than 26 ers but I sm sure that over time course designers might be induced to built courses that are more appropriate to 29 ers. Isn't it great that this wonderful sport of our can grow and develop. Pity some of us are too rigid to move eith the times. Change is inevitable. Get used to it Leaves room to fetch flame retardant and alcohol refill go deal calmly with Luddites ..........
  2. Similar principle to the Scottoiler that guys fit to their trail motorcycles to keep the chain lubricated and save sprockets etc.
  3. Can someone please explain where this is. I want to be sure to avoid the area.
  4. I faced this same decision a couple of months ago. I bought the Anthem because I like it's looks. Technically they are similar. Buy the one you love to look at most. Otherwise you will always wonder what the other one felt like.
  5. If you have to upgrade your cellphone today ( upgrade being the operative word) and you are offered a 3 g or 4 g phone. What choice do you make? This is the dilemma facing new entrants to the MTB world. They don't follow HUB arguments but are guided by sales assistants in bike shops. This is what will drive 29 er sales. I have a 26" hardball and a 29 er softtail. Probably the 2 extremes and I love them both. New is not bad, it just sometimes threatens the status quo that we are comfortable with. Both get the job done but neither is the ultimate or only solution to the problem. This will not be the last change on the MTB scene. Long live the evolution of this most wonderful of passions/sports/ obsessions that Is Mountainbiking!
  6. Generally happens after someone says " hold my beer and watch this".
  7. You had me worried with the title of the thread. The after tubeless part made ne think there was a new and improved technology that I had not yet heard of or adopted. Being an idiotic trendchaser and riding a 29 er , this caused me serious angst. I will need to increase my number of weekly therapy sessions now for my universe to regain equilibrium............ or just go for a nice ride
  8. Wiki is our friend.........but I had never heard of it before I searched it. Left turn on Ref light after coming to a complete stop. Legal in Germany and a couple of states in the USA. Widely practiced in SA although obviously illegal.............. but then there are so many other illegal activities that this doesn't seem to bother us either.
  9. I got an edge 800 for my birthday and did my first ride with it today. I love the feedback on the ride via the graphical format in Garmin Training centre. I am sure I have a lot to learn and havent even loaded the maps yet so much playing to do before I RTFM ( Read the flippen manual) to find out about what I dont know the unit can do.
  10. Good cause. I'm in for a raffle ticket. Let me have pmt details. FRAIL...... these distances are beyond my comprehension..........and on consecutive days..........you must have legs of steel and and @r$e of granite !! I'm envious of your talents and vasbyt! Good luck with the ride!
  11. I'm also in the market for an upgrade to my Anthem 29er wheels but I just want to lace a decent set of rims to the existing hubs. looking to decide what rims will best serve my purpose. Weight not the main factor but reliability is important. Will watch the replies you get.
  12. I LOVE the suspension!!
  13. I have had burps at pressure of 1.8 bar on the front wheel twice within the first 2 weeks of riding. I have conversions and not ust rims. Since increasing the pressure to 2.2 no further problems. Now looking at upgrading my rims to ust but keeping the hubs as they are already good enough for me and this is a more affordable option. Running a softtail 29er the difference in tyre pressure is not that noticeable anyway but I would like to run them slightly softer for certain conditions hence the rim upgrade.
  14. Aside from pricing, which should improve if enough of us 29er freaks buy the system I think there is one obvious advantage to this system over a cable system. Movement of the rear derailleur is done via hydraulic pressure both for up and down changing. This will be valuable in muddy conditions where springs are sometimes not strong enough to move through the mud and limit changing of gears. I'm just happy that technology does move on and I have a choice to embrace or reject it based on my personal preferences
  15. I have a silver one just like that. Loving the ride and suits my kind of riding. Slightly less nimble on tight singletrack than my old 26' hardtail but a lot more forgiving if I make a mistake due to the big wheels just rolling over everything with ease.I ride quite a bit of tar getting to some of the routes I like to ride and this has been the biggest difference. Just rolls so darn easy on tar. Only downer has been the saddle. Man that Fizik is an instrument of torture. Either that or my rear end is too soft. I went to my LBS and they advised me to change the saddle. Not a very expensive one only about R500 but it has made all the difference. Enjoy your bike. I am officially a member of the Giant Anthem 29er X1 fan club!!
  16. For Nookie I break any rules.............
  17. I didnt say when I was finished......I meant when I am 99 and too old for all parts required to be fully operational................ By then MTB tracks will all be paved.....Sadly!!
  18. Nookie until I cant anymore. If any singletrack is left unpaved by that time I will get on my bicycle again............
  19. Lovely product. Definitely worth the money.
  20. I met some guys on the top of Bredtsnek this morning. They rode from a filling station in ten vicinity. I was scouting it on my Motorcycle. Looks like a lovely ride. Hope you guys enjoyed it. I will have to try it next week.
  21. Thanks guys

  23. I ride a Giant Anthem 29 er. I am happy with the hubs but uncomfortable with the tubeless conversions. I want to get tubeless rims laced to the existing hubs. I need help with the following: 1) what factors do I need to take into consideration when selecting tubeless rims 2) are these rims available in SA or must I import them 3) which rims do you suggest and why 4) which LBS is bestfor getting the wheels laced in JHB near Cresta
  24. I ride a Anthem I 29er. The hubs seem ok but I am less convinced that the tubeless conversions are worthwhile and am considering buying tubeless rims and having them laced to the existing hubs. I need help with the following 1) What is important to take into consideration in this process? 2)Can I source these rims in SA? 3)Which brands do you suggest?
  25. It has got to look and feel right for me. I am normally quite analytical but I buy bikes on these two very subjective criteria. I love my Giant Anthem 29er. Comfortable relative to my hardtail 26' and very forgiving. Not as nimble in very tight stuff but what you can't avoid doesn't matter as the bigger wheels just roll over obstacles very easily. It doesn't matter what everyone else thinks, just what you believe. My 2c
