  1. Nice. Freewheeling should be possible until you get some pedals...
  2. What people in white coats think is the right place to brake and what I think is the right place to brake will surely differ by a few metres. Life is so much more interesting for late brakers...
  3. I don't know the science of braking, but must say that after having ridden many, many MTBs across all price ranges over the past 19 years, hydraulic disc brakes definitely require less perceived effort to slow the bike down and offer a feeling of greater control. Cable discs have improved markedly over the past couple of years, but are not quite as plush as hydraulic. Having said that, my own hardtail has V-brakes, which definitely need new pads (one's skills can only take one so far). When I've saved up enough cash to buy a new MTB, I will make sure it has hydraulic disc brakes.
  4. Braking is over-rated. What ever happened to good old skill?
  5. He's not wrong. Plus, his MTB co-daddy Joe Breeze has been making commuter bikes for a few years now and is probably doing quite well now that oil is so costly. http://www.breezerbikes.com/ Circa 1975 Fisher: Hey dude, like let's make off-road bikes with gears and call them mountain bikes. Breeze: Cool idea man. I think it could be the next big thing. Fisher: Yeah. Circa 2007 Fisher: Hey Joe, no more mountain biking. What's with this commuter bike thing you're so fixated on? Breeze: You know, I just got bored with it and the whole 29-inch wheel size thing just made me frustrated. I think commuter bikes could be the next big thing. Fisher: Yeah.
  6. Tighten your chainring bolts.

  8. Wow! That is ridiculous! I am in awe of Gebreselassie and Tergat. Watched them race live a few times when I was an athletics writer in the 1990s and just marveled at the apparent ease at which they run such a fast pace. Wonder if we'll see a sub-2 in our lifetime? Weird to think that just over 50 years ago, a sub-4 minute mile was the big barrier in athletics and that record is now at 3:43!
  9. Wow! That is impressive! Well done Brand!
  10. Sorry Yang, that tone wasn't actually intended. Well done on starting a positive thread. It's so refreshing among so much negativity. I always wonder why most people find it easier to criticise than to compliment...
  11. Andrew is the most influential person in South African cycling. Some like him, some hate him, but I reckon most respect him. I like that he is a doer and not just a talker. Can't wait for that new bike park to open 5 kays from my house! Oh, and just to confirm, his surname is spelled like this: McLean. If you're going to criticise or praise someone, at least get the spelling of their name right. Sean Badenhorst2008-09-23 21:01:12
  12. Yes' date=' but I think the topic is about what works best to clean your MTB... [/quote'] Sean, you are such a card, you need to be dealt with. Ooh! Fighting talk before Saturday's big Spruit ride... Just wait till I'm fit again!
  13. Critical Mass? Looks more like Critical Mess! WTF are they doing? It's people like that who give us a bad reputation.
  14. Yes, but I think the topic is about what works best to clean your MTB...
  15. It's easier and less time consuming to just take a laxative... You'll be more than 19g lighter.
  16. i heard the weather is like this for another 2 weeks still Fine by me. Haven't had a cloudy day in ages here. Perfect riding weather! Probably going to take a dip in the pool now to cool off.
  17. Amazing! Now I'm even more full of hope! What age do you think I should stop expecting a call-up to the Proteas? I was a useful opening batsman for the school first team in Stds 9 and 10... 12 boys in the school? I agree with you Sean' date=' in the Argus a guy of 72 put ears on thousands last year....[/quote'] Not quite, but it's not a school known for producing great sportsmen that's for sure... Ended up marrying the scorer though! That led to children and responsibilities and premature ageing. Or at least the perception of it! Sean Badenhorst2008-09-19 06:31:21

  19. I still can't post pics on The Hub for some reason, which is clearly a technical one, cos I'm not that stupid. Pity cos I've got a couple of classic pics from my early road racing days when helmets were small, eyewear was huge and Greg Lemond was The Man.
