  1. New shifter, new rear derailleur, new cassette, new chain, new chainring....unless your current 2x10 drivechain is poked & needs replacing, it's not worth the change. .... personal opinion of a 2x troglodyte
  2. I wonder if they aren't parking at the stone church waiting for a suitable target/s to ride past.
  3. @Benky fantastic achievement, it's seriously impressive! Thanks for ensuring that SA was so well represented. Nutrition is obviously vitally important, how were you able to refuel to the extent you needed? Any interesting food choices? As an aside, the Spez Sequoia I bought from you years ago has brought me many hours of exploration & enjoyment, so thanks for that!
  4. A new addition to the household. Thanks to @Fu Dogfor transferring ownership and a couple of other hubbers for good deals on some components.
  5. If she's been sponsored the bike by Sling she might want to at least add it as her Strava gear & give them the necessary exposure.
  6. We used to call him Paul, not sure why or if that was actually his name! He used to do laps down Camps bay main Rd. @JewbaccaI had a relatively similar interaction with him outside Checkers previously.
  7. Well, last August I got hit by a member of the SA Navy as he turned down towards the Naval base in Simonstown, 50m away from the police station. He stopped, gave false details and then drove off when I said I wanted the cops on scene. My mate tracked him going through naval security and they identified him & confirmed the details were false. I tried to get Simonstown police more involved than just filling out an accident report for insurance. After about 5 fruitless attempts to get to speak with the station commander I gave up. Dealing with the concussion and looking after myself with a fractured right elbow, which needed surgery, was in the end of higher priority. People generally are not nice* and don't give a toss about others.. *original phrase replaced for the pg13 filter
  8. Most likely the incident that a cycling club from Ocean View was unfortunately involved in. Sounds like a taxi overtaking into oncoming traffic hit the one rider. It appears the rider is sort of ok, badly lacerated arm according to the FB post below. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid0qZ7wqUBpX66t256gWaW8vFLh5iLNBXWc1DRDn6dsVMbw5wgNT7NjE5YHw42ujSVbl&id=292947584552129
  9. Here we go: https://forum.bikehub.co.za/topic/190111-front-pannier/?do=findComment&comment=3837736
  10. Does your fork have bottle cage mounts? I created some DIY brackets out of waste pipe & used dry bags to store my tent & sleeping bag. Think I posted the info on the bikepacking thread, will try find it..
  11. I'm pretty partial to the Blackburn lights. Especially after accidentally putting one through the washing machine with no ill effects!
  12. I'm a bit ambivalent about the Epic coverage, I really don't mind who wins in the pro ranks. However if the coverage also included focus on guys like this then I'd be all over it.
  13. Just ride straight out the door and head into the waterfront. That'll get you onto Beach Rd Greenpoint which is your route to Camps Bay & then Chappies. It's the main cycle route for riding from the Southern suburbs round town.
  14. Welcome to the Hub. Given your location (I'm assuming Plett), buying 2nd hand will be more difficult and although buying sight unseen remotely can definitely work, it increases the risk, especially with a mtb which is prone to more wear than a road bike. From that perspective I'd say buying new might be a better option. Especially since you're basically new to the sport and will benefit hugely from the bike shop assisting with setup. The right saddle and good positioning on the bike (setup) could be the difference between you guys making full use of the bikes & one of you (of both) being so uncomfortable that you end up packing it in after a short while. Good luck!
  15. Yup, that's the standard gearing we used in the early '90s. If you were lucky you had a 23 at the back. Seem to remember that after groveling up Franschhoek pass after about 170km during my first Double Century, I sourced a 39 tooth ring for the front the next year!
  16. I can't see any reason why you can't use any road bike stem on your Synapse. I'm riding the 2015 Synapse Disc version & it's running a standard interchangeable stem.
  17. 9150 will be hydraulic brakes I think. So hoods will be different size to the ones for mechanical brake shifters
  18. I eventually had to get a mate coming over from Canada bring a pair of hoods in for me. Coolheat were suggesting 4-6 months wait for local stock of the rs685 I needed. Good luck!
  19. Set of road tyres(2) looking for a good home. Michelin 700x23c blue, yes blue...sidewalls Collect in Lakeside, CT
  20. Think it might be the gradient as well. The couple of rides I've done on that section have been tough. Hills might be fairly short, but they're proper steep. No long gradual climbs, just straight up and down, rinse & repeat stuff.
  21. Converting a flat bar single speed commuter bike to drop bars. Looking for a pair of old school road brake levers, no shifting needed. Or perhaps STI levers that no longer shift. Happy to pay, thanks.
  22. Aah, so it's the Rook Scout. Was trying to figure it out. Nice looking bike & very well priced. I assume it doesn't have a bottle cage mount under the down tube? I run a 3rd bottle there which I then decant into one of my main bottles. Also if you get a side exit cage you should be able to run a full sized bottle even with the frame bag. Enjoy!
  23. @Mongoose Manwhat tyres are those you're running? They look pretty smooth on the vertical line! Interesting placement of your two extra bottle cages I assume those are a cable tie hack?
  24. Thanks, been eyeing that route from Riversdale over Garcia then back via the route to Herbertsdale for awhile but at 170km'ish it's a proper long day! Plus as you've mentioned very little by way of water stops.
