  1. In response to the thread, I like carbon. Like what is like, boys like girls, you like ices cream, you like holding hands. really. I have a steel frame and a scandium carbon mix. I prefer the steel frame (with a steel fork). I am willing to have the 2 kg penalty. In my experience recently, it does not make a difference. After four days of riding, I was the only rider still comfortable in the saddle......... As others will say steel is real, and life is to short to cycle carbon bikes......
  2. I spoke to Dawid Boshoff, the manager of Groenkloof and Klapperkop nature reserve today. He has assured me that there are great things planned for mtb on klapperkop in the near future. He is planning new trails there for mtb soon. At this stage the cattle gates are finished at the top and bottom, and the fencing around Klapperkop nearly completed. Game will be introduced hopefull before christmas. He has posted two guards and elements of his anti poaching unit on the kop as well. All he asks is that if you are cycling on klapperkop and observe any loiterers, squatters or suspicious people, that you report it to him or the guards immediately. THey will then either demolish the dwellings or detain the squatters. His contact details are on the groenkloof website: http://www.tshwane.gov.za/groenkloof.cfm David is a Ironman triathlete who cycles mtb for off season training, if transbaviaans can be seen as off season training that it.
  3. I see you are going from single speed to single wheel. Ultimate weight savings
  4. what of going single speed, with a rigid fork. Mega weight savings.......
  5. Take a picture and post it on here with the title - Cyclists behaving ..... well!!!!! and we'll see how many 'hits' it gets' date=' and how many pages the thread runs to [/quote'] That heading is an oxymoron...... it does not exist!!!!!!! The posting on the previos page about Robots out in Witkoppen...... the general rule is that the intersection should then operate as a four way stop AND EVEN MORE CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN THAN USUAL!!!!!!!!...... but it is useless telling that to testosterone driven cyclists in a bunch. On behalf of all my roadie friends, give it a break please. Why!!!!!...... or do they not like it when somebody tells them they are stupid and irresponsible for endangering their own lives?????? No they don't. It is one of their pet peevs, that and a number of other things too. If I remember there is such a thing as the Darwin awards.....

  9. As a cyclist when uses the road to commute these days, instead of large bunch riding (where I also was guilty of all sins), I have slowly came to appreciate why motorists hate large groups of road cyclists. In all my attempts to justify their behaviour I have come away with two key points, one disorder on the road is an abboration. The motorists complaint is largely based on the belief that road cyclists are disorganised, ill disciplined, selfish, ext ext ext. Motorists really hate it when the entire lane is taken at the front with a tail that stretches for kms of hanger on'er. Get past it all is a pain. two. If there is a sembalance of order, such as a revolving paceline of say 10 cyclists, who ride "abreasted" for an obvious purpose and stay to the left of the lane, this the motorists like as it is predictable, orderly and easy to pass. However, it seems the second senario is impossible in RSA as cyclists never train, but are always are racing or involved in some or other (*&(# measuring competition.
  10. registered and logged my first 26km
  11. Considering the SANDF is neither paid to rape or murder you or your family, nor to do the police's work, I don't understand how you can vent at the SANDF for poor service delivery in this regard. Also you knowledge of the SANDF's equipment seems to be as poor as your idea of what the SANDF should be doing. SO I disregard your ignorance for what it is. To drop me is probably the easiest thing in the world, simply because I am not interest in competing in a sport saturated in both drugs and inflated ego's. Also you know as well as me that if a bunch stays together it is because the top teams want it that way, if the top teams feel a break is good for them then the break will get away. Good tactics and strategy is working with what you have, and bad strategy is complaining the whole time. But as a confessed fun rider I can only chirp from the side.
  12. the truth shall set you free, unless you are a criminal, then it will get you locked up. Please be so kind as to give us sufficient details so that we too will know the truth. Your abuse and complaining means nothing to me as I am a cyclist from whom "the truth is withheld " and ignorance is bliss.
  13. two points to make: I was not the "SANDF" that went on strike, that would have been a coup de etat and the president would be a general now. It was a small dissatisified element within the SANDF who took leave, and on their own time made their complaints public, against the oders and court orders that instructed them not to. THat is why the word munity has been used in the media. Considering the SANDF is at the moment the poorest paid of the security forces, ask yourself, are you not getting what you pay for? Secondly, although the sharp climb has been removed from the race, there still is a rather nasty false flat that starts at the Academic Hospital and only ends almost 4km later at the Presidents Golf course in Colbyn. If there are sufficient attacks in hamilton and Church there should be enough road for a break to get away. Teams will have to use their climbers to attack in these areas to weaken the sprinters. Complaining only highlights that the new conditions have not been studied and new race strategies worked out.

  15. Okay, it seems that the idea of a medal is still popular. When people complete a challenging event or gets placed in the top of a race then they would like some proof that they have actually done so. So medals for events that are seen as awesome by the athletes peers need to have some item of commemoration, like a trophy, medal, tshirt, badge, tie ext ext. The challenge is to determine an athletes threshold in terms of "Achievement". Sometimes value is placed on extremely hard events like CApe Epic, Transbaviaans, Comrades, Two Oceans ext. Sometimes it is on a "first" like the first sub-3 hours Argus or the first time a 10km is raun under 40 minutes. A medal is a symbol that you have "arrived" as an athlete. So for a guy that has done CApe Epic, Transbaviaans, Comrades, Two Oceans, a chuch fun ride medal is a bit common, (Unless there is a reason, like being the first event they road, or road witha girlfriend ext). MEdals can also equal memories.
  16. I can give you three checkers bags full of medals if you want.
  17. yes. Normally a mtb chain only lasts about 3 mnths, and a cassette six. THe two or three chains per cassette seems to be the standard. Also clean the chain after ever off road ride or the chain will be toasted after only 2 months. 3 years on a chain must be the hub record, that or you don't train enough.
  18. cycling 230km because someone asked me to, commiting to cycle another 200km three months later because someone else asked me to. Cycling in 24hr events because "someone asked me to". Cycle to work, to keep sane. Mtb in the evening and over weekends because friends don't let friends cycle alone.
  19. will have to have a pub lunch to remember him.
  20. Can you imagine an Obese Blue Bulls support with sharven legs?
  21. O dear Oh dear, now half of Pretoria's men are going to shave their legs.
  22. Um, sorry to be the wet blanket, but if you are going to race on the road, then it is a road bike you need. The geometery, gearing wheels ext are designed for it and you will automatically increase your speed. However, if you are doing the distance as a mid to back of the pack, then a MTB can be sufficient. (Just don't have too many Contador or Schelk brother ambitions) The best "improvements" on a MTB if you are going to go onto tar is the "slick" tyres, as proper mtb tyres are expensive and wear out quickly on tar. Also find a way to lockout your shock/s as well. Also consider your gearing which will always be at a disadvantage vs road bikes (53X11 always trumps 44x12) THe best overall improvement for cycling in general is to get proper equipment, especially shoes and cleats. THe hard sole will make cycling more comfortable and the cleat will activate more muscles in the legs. LAstly, as a mtb you should always have a clean drive chain. A spotless drive chain in fact.
  23. apart from voting for crissy, atias or amanda, I offer you this: http://media.ebaumsworld.com/picture/traintrain/ThisMoran.png
