  1. Why South Africans have no manners? Interesting. Possibly because South Africa's are not used to living in cloes proximity with one another? Their personal space is so big that it encompasses the entire town house complex. THerefore they are unable to ever relax, resulting in a constant stress reaction. Secondly, too much too soon. A guy who failed matric is now the ANCYL leader and his insecurity and ego, mixed together makes him edgy and demanding? Thirdly, fast cars without the ability to actually drive properly? Lastly, the attitude that Africa is a tough country and the biggest bastard deserves to win. I wish I could drive a G6 gun or a Rooikat at 60km/hr during rush hour traffic on th N1. Then I can shout "Africa is a tough country" every time I crush a fine german sportscar.
  2. The only time you should shout "hold your line" is when you party with Tom Boonen. Half wheeling in a bunch is dangerous. If you want to get that close to the guys but, rather hire a hotel room and sort it out after the race. (I know that CT specific are not very physical on the bike, and there is no touching and gentle shouldering in the bunch there). A soft touch can also remind a cyclist that he is a bit close for comfort. (After that a hard moer) LAstly, the polite way to do it is to explain to the offending cyclist that if he intends to switch you again, he will meet a tree in the gutter very soon. Most riders are very apologetic and are willing to learn from their mistakes. A quiet polite comment at the back of a paceline can solve a lot of ignorant and stupid behaviour at the front. (PS some cyclists don't believe this and prefer being switched).
  3. Try THINKBIKE as well. They focus on motorbikes, but have a bicycling awareness leg as well. If you want a journo's take on it pm SeanBardenhorst (A hubber that occasionally edits Bicycling) or phone Attie Koekemoer or Adel Tait at Ride mag. Attie's dad has some very interesting initiatives and ideas wrt cycling in RSA, and is worth a call. Good Luck
  4. thanks for the invite. please confirm the date.
  5. if you got it flaunt it.
  6. Speed devil, an inconsiderate idiot stays an inconsiderate idiot, on a bike or in a car. It is always interesting to see that the guy with the flashy bike demanding his space, is the same guy in his fashy car, demanding his space. Unfortunately, he does not realise that to get, you should be willing to give as well.
  7. CWC or Chris Williemse Cycles or Engelbrecht's Lifestyle Centre
  8. So we all agree that road cycling and mtb cycling are two DIFFERENT activities. LIke 100m sprints and comrades marathon. (HOwever, there are comparison tables for running). THE major difference is not the FITNESS component, because if you are racing to win, you still have to be on top form. THE difference is in the type of thinking and reflex actions required. On the road thinking is often on "strategic" or long term. ie is the break good, must I chase, where are my team mates ext. In MTB the mental challenge is often TERRIAN (or tactical) ie which way around this rock, do I jump or do I roll over the drop off ext. Bike handling stills (micro) are very important for MTB. ALso the body takes a an overall harder knock on a MTB race. There is more terrian/ road feedback and buzz on a MTB race. Also the arms and core get more punishment as well. Lastly, the MTB is heavier and has greater resistance than a road bike. So yes MTB can be harder.
  9. If you ride a MTB to go balls to the wall, and are chasing on an ascent followed by trying to open the gap on the descent it can be worse than road cycling. However, if you only cruise on the MTB then road can be more difficult, especially if you are prone to peer pressure. I think one should also define the discipline of MTB, 24 hr mtb can be very intense, especially if you are chasing as well.
  10. Money grows on trees in Jhb. Prices in PTA: GrRoenkloof: R18:50 after the increase Rietvlei dam: the same Klapperkop: Free (but take own security) Greenbelt from Wonderboom South to Quarry: Free (take own security) Km of km of km virgin trail from Cullinan to Britz: Free. (Follow the railway and powerlines) And then you want to pay R50 to cycle in circles. Even Northern Farm is Cheaper.
  11. and there is no brannas and coke anywhere in PTA. They thought they were buying it to celebrate but they drowned their sorrows in the meantime. and the drinking did not degenerate into a bottle smashing street party either.. Minimal glass on the roads today. Only three or four broken bottles.
  12. I can recall a steve hofmeyers song that goes: 'n blou bul eet nie van die vloer af nie, 'n blou bul weet nie van veloor af nie, Now with extra skop. Sunday was a pleasure in PTA, everyone was so depressed and quiet..........
  13. THe ratio can be set at 1:2 road vs mtb however, with MTB there is nowhere to hide, so you cannot draft, furthermore the mental concentration required during mtb is a lot more especialy when the road get rocky.
  14. He is da man. can run fast as well. Got a handfull of comrades, two oceans medals as well. One year he won the fastest combined time for Aurgus and 2Oceans. Was a SA duathlete for may years. SANDF Champ for two years running. can go on for days.
  15. Agree with intern R3000 if you are lucky, maybe even less. The handlebar shifters are an interesting twist.
  16. old Alu frames lack in resell value, as alu does become fatigued. Some of the components may border on collectable. If it was steel with no rust however........

    Shaving

Shaving is a cycling thing to do. It shows that you arfe commited to the sport. Some form of initiation. LIke I am willing to look like some gay guy, that is how serious I am about cycling. IMAGE IS EVERYTHING, especially when you have no results.
  18. I am a very lonely person and appreciate them calling me. SO I let them talk, a lot. After they through their script, I assess their performance, explain to them that the product they selling sucks, and that although I have appreciated their company for such a long time, no I cannot buy anything without consulting my wife. Could they call back, say tommorrow?
