  1. We have an exciting new offering for all the cycling enthusiasts in the SA market! We're now proud to introduce the Muc-Off chain optimization, which is available through select retailers (see the link below to find an Authorised Retailer).

To answer a question that will come up; what makes the Muc-Off Chain Optimization so special?
It uses state-of-the-art ultrasonic tanks to give your chain a deep clean before applying either the Muc-Off Hydrodynamic or Ludicrous AF lube. These lubes are also applied using ultrasonic tanks for even deeper penetration, due to being heated at precise temperatures required to create the optimum viscosity for the lube to penetrate deep into all contact points within the chain links.

If you're curious about what the process includes, you can find more information at the link below from Muc-Off. And if you're eager to try it out, simply click on the link to find your closest retailer.

Let's take your drivetrain to the next level!

  2. You can also try finding yourself a PowerTap Joule GPS bicycle computer, these were manufactured by the same company who made the IC so would have the ability to read the proprietary ANT connection.

Finally, you can try the legacy version of TrainerRoad on a PC, they - to my understanding, have the ability to read the IC300

Have you tried to contact Selfloops in Italy? They were granted a licence from CycleOps to be able to read the IC300 and the proprietary ANT connection. This would be via an app they developed compatible with select Android tablets

Nope the IC300 is not ANT+, it is ANT a proprietary version of ANT+ which most softwares stopped supporting some 2-3 years back.

  4. Thanks for reaching out to Bicycle Power Trading! You're welcome to contact us for any assistance you may need.

Depending on the age of your unit, it may require a new belt and pulley wheel. Not to worry though, as we currently have these units in stock. Alternatively, you're welcome to purchase these service items online via bicyclepower.co.za and do the replacement yourself.

What's great is that the belt ships with all the tools needed to open the non-drive side cover. So, you'll have everything you need to get the job done.

If you have any further questions or need additional information, please feel free to get in touch with us. We're here to help!

  5. Please reach out to us tomorrow - Bicycle Power Trading 0787086908 as I believe the Saris Bones 3 EX which has been designed with rear spoiler concerns in mind. The dogs leg and strap management system may work but we will need to know the year and exact model.

  6. Have a look at our range of Saris Bones bike racks, they available through top retailers or Sportsman’s Warehouse, both the Bones 2 or Bones 3 EX will work. Depending on the size of the rear spoiler it may be suggested to look at the Bones 3 EX with extra support of rear spoilers.

About to pull the trigger on this...With this machine discontinued by the agent, is it a bad idea investing in one of these? Anyone know if parts/servicing are available through alternate channels?? BicyclePower cant provide any information other than its discontinued...

    All replies appreciated.

    Thanks

Hi as i explained on the phone, the CycleOps Phantom 5 has been discontinued (has been for a number of years now) as have all associated spare / replacement parts. We are out of stock with no further abilities to restock due to the above mentioned -  product and support parts have been discontinued from the original supplier.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

  8. I recently bought myself the SARIS Bones EX 3-bike carrier.

Unfortunately, neither of our dual sus bikes' frames are compatible with the carrier and it looks like I need to buy the Bike Adapters as well now

Now, it doesn't seem like there is stock anywhere in SA, but Cycle Lab have a decent price on the THULE ladies bike adapter.

Any insight if these would be compatible with one another?

Common sense would say these Adapters are much of a muchness in terms of difference and should therefor work either way...

Also don't want to dig myself further into a hole.

Thanks for your support and the purchase of a Saris Bones 3 EX bike rack, i am sure you will enjoy the rack!

When it comes to ladies bikes or dual bus MTB's the use of a BikeBeam is strongly recommended, we are unfortunately sold out of these items are the boom in cycling and December peak season running stock down quicker than expected.

Any BikeBeam alternative will work fine, Thule offer something as do some of the local brands, they will all be compatible with the Saris Bones 3 EX.

  9. So now we have dumb, not so smart (or is that not so dumb?) and smart trainers.

I have the not so variety. It's smart but not FE-C compliant.

The CycleOps Phantom 5 is "semi smart" in that is will control the resistance but is is not ANT+ FEC so will not be compatible within Zwift.

It will allow you to connect to Zwift and do a workout i.e. ERG mode but will not function in normal sim more in terms of adjust gradient and then you change the gears.

Rouvy is the only software that will allow the Phantom 5 to adjust the gradient and allow the rider to control their gears at the same time.

  10. Using Zwift on windows 10 and the Hammer has the latest firmware - 31.062

    Trainer is connected via Bluetooth

For this set up my recommendation would be an ANT+ USB else see if your WiFi can be configured for 5GHZ. This would need to be done on your WiFi router.

Below is a link to a pretty helpful article on what to look out for and what changes can be made to avoid signal dropouts.

  11. VERY different experience from a few of us. Bought 5 between mates..

WRT local back up, Andrew completely non responsive. My cousin eventually tracked down his wife's work phone number after he went quiet with the money. I had to start CC'ing global in mails to get a response from him.

WRT product, 2 of the 3 mtb power meters that we bought cracked in the EXACT same place on the battery housing. They blamed my mechanic for over torquing the screw, but their new design changed this thing specifically. Local wouldn't stand by the product, global would t stand by the product and in the end I had to claim from my own insurance and pay excess.

Bad product experience (it happens) but terrible support. I'm definitely never getting another P2M with all the other quality product on the market these days.

Just my 2c. Hope that other hubbers learn from my mistake.

Sorry to hear about your negative experiences with the product, since BPT has taken over the brand we have and will continue to work hard on improving the power2max market share and offering customers the support the deserve. The newer NG and NGeco models have had significant improvements over previous models with almost zero manufacturing defects. We have further worked with p2m Germany to offer customers who do experience product failures which are not covered by warranty a significant discount through a crash replacement program. This is assessed on a case by case base.

  12. Saris offer their TD1 which just arrived - https://www.bicyclepower.co.za/product/td1-trainer-desk/

The TD1 features adjustable height and a handy power strip to keep your favourite devices fully charged.

With the days getting shorter spending more time on the trainer is becoming reality. Having quick and easy access to the likes of a cell phone, power bank, energy bar, sweat towel or even the water bottle means setting out "mission control" is part of the daily indoor training regime.

  13. Hi all! To those who took part in our first Know No Bounds Tour event last night @ Sportopia Cycles, thanks for joining us. @Nick, we’re sorry you got taken at the line so close to the end of the evening! An MP1 will be at Sportopia Cycles for the next two weeks and we encourage all to experience what the platform has to offer. For those based in CT, we’ll be Caffe Neo (Mouille Point) tomorrow morning between 7:30AM - 11:30AM with the entire ecosystem, pull through, grab a cup of coffee on us and again, give the MP1 a try. It’s revolutionary.

  14. My honest advise, the Vector pedals have been designed for road use and as already pointed out, if someone were to ever take their road pedals off road the brand / distributor has every right to turn down a warranty sighting the product was used outside the scope in which it had been designed.

Further to this, i strongly believe that any brand that brings a MTB pedal based power meter to market is going to have major reliability / durability and accuracy problems. I would never put my own money behind a pedal based MTB power meter. Some immediate issues that come to mind are -

    • serviceability, good quality mtb pedals can last 18 months before a service is required. expect to half this for a MTB pedal based platform as the brand establishes what bearings work and which don't.

    • accuracy, the conditions a MTB operates within is far more aggressive than that of road, this means the algorithm used in the measurement of power on pedal based system for MTB will have to be significantly "smoothed out". Not to mention the ranges of cadence used in MTB are also different to that of road.

when i look at power meters it comes down to accuracy and reliability / durability, a pedal based mtb power meter has major question marks.

Regardless of the above, i do believe pedal based power meters for MTB's are on their way. SRM introduced their version at EuroBike and i am sure more will be launched this year.

Right now the power2max (crank based) platform are incredibly popular given their pricing point, dual sided power measurement and that good old Germany engineering and manufacturing quality meaning the customer has reliable power data.

  15. A recommendation of ours is to get the prefered hardware (we bias to the Saris H3) then try the various training applications. Make use of their free trail, these generally range between 14 - 30 days as ChrisF mentioned.

Through the use of the software trail periods you are then able to understand what software features you enjoy and which you don't. This will also give you a 1 - 2 month free training period.

Once you have found the preferred software supplier, subscribe and get training. Generally the subscriptions are between US $ 7.00 - 20.00 per user per month.

Below are some of the softwares I have used and will recommend.

    Rouvy

Pricing starts from as little as US $ 6.25 per month (per user), and in my opinion Rouvy is perhaps the best value for money out there. Their premium sub works out to US $ 10.00 per month and allows access to their "premium full HD routes", the ability to add 2 more family members and have the Rouvy app installed on up to 5 devices at any time.

Rouvy is fully compatible with iOS, Android, PC and now Mac. They even have an Apple TV app which is free to use during their testing phase.

Rouvy offers real life virtual routes, workouts, on line races, the ability to import .gpx files and replicate the route terrain indoors and finally supports the TrainingPeaks workout of the day function.

All the above is at a competitive pricing point

    Zwift

Without doubt Zwift is the biggest and most popular software on the market. Zwift is also a personal favourite choice of mine. Their workouts, online races and sense of community does it for me.

I also seem to find the H3 resistance changes in ERG mode the smoothest of them all when using Zwift.

Zwift is compatible with iOS, high spec'd Android devices, PC and Mac as well as Apple TV.

Zwift have a great mobile application (Zwift Companion) which is free to download and allows you to chat to friends, have full control of your workout and the ability to skip segments, increase intensity and when the workout becomes too hard drop the intensity too.

The last I checked their monthly cost is US $ 15.00 per user per month. They unfortunately do not have any kind of family memberships so if their multiple users and each wants their own account that's another subscription at full price.

    TrainerRoad

For those looking to take their training to the next level and want to seriously focus on intervals this is the software for you. The app offers hundreds of compete training plans ranging from a couple of weeks up to a couple of months in duration with thousands of workouts.

TrainerRoad is compatible with iOS, Android, PC and Mac devices (NO APPLE TV yet).

I stand under correction but I think they are currently the most expensive app with a monthly cost of US $ 20.00. They also DO NOT offer a family subscription model.

    FulGaz

This is an app I have been playing around with and has a lot of resemblance to Rouvy, many of the routes found in Rouvy can be found in FulGaz. These are real routes with real GoPro video footage unlike Zwift which is animated routes.

They have built in training plans similar to TrainerRoad but just not as vast and the ability to create your own workouts etc.

They are compatible on iOS, PC, higher spec Android devices and Apple TV.

Their monthly subscription is around US $ 13.00

There are of course many more applications such as SufferFest etc. A full review on many of the apps has been done by DC Rainmaker here - https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2016/11/trainer-apps-guide.html

Everyone is different and prefers a different application / training setup. My girlfriend and I have very different preferences in trainer app set up.

I enjoy Zwift and make use of an Apple TV and 50" TV. A good fan and wireless headphones are extras i would suggest.

My girlfriend enjoys structured workouts and watching Netflix, for this we have an older iPad set up with Rouvy and then she will catch up on series running off the Apple TV.

My recommendation has to be the use of an Apple TV simply due to the flexibility and attractive costing of the set up.

  16. Take a look at the Saris H3 direct drive (rear wheel off) trainer, this has been rated as one of the best trainers for the 2020 season. The trainer will connect to the likes of Zwift, Rouvy, TrainerRoad and many more applications. Connection is either via ANT+ or BLE. integrated speed, power and cadence data all come with the H3.

RE power meters you can get in contact with us too, we specialise in power2max crank based systems and Favero pedal based systems. Both units also work on ANT+ and BLE and will provide the basics such as power and cadence data, pedal metrics and left right balance are also available depending on the level / model of power meter you choose.

Head units, as already mentioned both the Saris H3 direct drive trainer, power2max and / or Favero power meters work with ANT+ / BLE so will connect with any head unit able to receive ANT+ power data, common head units are - Garmin, Polar, Wahoo these will also give you HR data as most are sold with HR sensors.

Perhaps give us a call next week to discuss the various options, we have been in the power meter / indoor training game for over 15 years!
