    Bike build

Ryinc, if you find someone and need to get a few people together for a workshop you can count me in. I also still need to learn alot. I'm also in Jhb near Randburg.
  2. Another vote for that one
  3. What about that newish shop in Melrose Arch? Concept Cyclery I think it is. I'm going there tomorrow to see what it's like.
  4. The previous owner of Alpine sold ZS-RWN which was being used by Helivac because he didn't receive a cent from Helivac for hire of the helicopter. Helivac wasn't making money and they couldn't afford the helicopter. I don't know what's happening with them now as I moved on from flying that type of work. But I do know they don't have their own helicopters like Netcare and the Red Cross.
  5. Ummmm... no. Helivac doesn't have any helicopters operating at all. They are now making use of the Netcare helcopter in Jhb and the Red Cross helicopters around the coastal areas if they are available for them.
  6. Helivac's helicopters used to be operated by a company called Alpine Aviation at Grand Central airport in Midrand. Alpine was bought over by a Mr Wilfred Tshuma who was trying to start a shuttle service from Sandton to Jhb International airport. Alpine is bankrupt and the Sheriff collected. In less than a year Wilfred took a top helicopter company and did with it what BEE farmers did with commercial farms that were given to them. But I haven't seen Helivac fly since then... unless they moved to another company which I doubt.
  7. So it boils down to TAX on TAX
  8. I'm sure you can use sandpaper that comes on a fixed belt driven machine. We use it on out composite material.
  9. Am I understanding this correct? Do you mean they only charge VAT on the calculated 10% value?
  10. Another +1 for Chaunce!
  11. Good question BigH. If the new law says your number plate must be riveted to your car then how does that apply to a bike rack's number plate? I don't know if this law has been applied yet.
  12. Capricorn, this isn't Macgyver. Mirrors are made specially made with small hole in the center for targeting specific locations or people. I'd rather have bit bigger mirror to cover more distance, and it weighs a whole lot less than a Macgyver knife . Besides, if you're riding somewhere you don't have signal and might need a mirror... good luck! Redline, that's a great idea! You don't need one that can take your Iphone. Buy yourself one of those really cheap and small Nokia at Game and they can fit easily in one of those small containers.
  13. I don't totally understand that one either. What's the use of signing a 24 month contract with Vodacom if you could cancel it at any time with a small penalty. That means Cellphone companies won't be giving anymore upgrades or free phones. But I know I'm probably misunderstanding that whole part of the act.
  14. How about just opening your window and letting him know in some really nice words what you think?
  15. If you're somewhere with cellphone reception, I would say a survival kit is not needed. With the lighters and mirrors in there they can be quite heavy and bulky. But instead of a survival a small first aid kit would be very helpful if someone has cut themselves badly or something similar. You could always use a tree branch together with the bandages in your fir staid kit for a splint if someone broke an arm or a leg. I also think a whistle could be a good idea. Would be nice to know if anyone here do carry small first aid kits. Something similar to a hikers one?
  16. When I bought my wife a bike I was looking at the same bikes but also a Silverback. All 3 with more or less the same specs. When I took her to choose between those 3 bikes, the last one we viewed was the Merida Matts TFS 100, she just made up her mind right there and then. But that was just her personal preference although nothing wrong with the Giant. The only thing I can find wrong with the Merida is the saddle. Not made for long distances, but that's easy to change.
  17. No, misunderstood. Just simply stating to hose it down was quite easy. They dry quite quick and the high pressure will clean your white shoe very well. Luckily my MTB shoes are black.
  18. The last time I had so much mud stuck in the cleat etc I just took out the inner and washed the shoes with a high pressure hose and hang them up to drie. It took out every little piece of mud and dirt.
  19. I have a Fortuner and bought the Thule Xpress 970 which fits onto your tow bar. It takes one second to fit and take off. Even my wife likes it because she can do it herself if I'm not there. So I really don't need one that tilts so you could open your back door because I take it off and leave it in the car when I'm not there. Another plus is they aren't that expensive.
  20. Well I went to NF this weekend. Great place... that mud really makes it hard We were in a group of 8 riders and alot of ther people told me that you should just try and stay away from riding too close to the highway when you're not in a big group. Poeple have been hijacked there by gunpoint before. Otherwise what a great place to go and ride
  21. I had the exact same problem last week with only one pedal. I tried everything from Q20 to Mouse Milk. Took it to the LBS, didn't even take it off the carrier. They just did it there for me instantly. Took less than 2 secs. They had quite a long lever for some good leverage... or I might have loosened it for them
  22. I'm 1.79m and bought a new medium Merida. Large was just a bit too big for me.
  23. Quite an interesting read if you have the time to read some of the comments by people regarding the cyclist vs motorists debate. http://www.news24.com/MyNews24/Letters/Motorists-be-considerate-20110120
  24. Not just a poor road... a VERY BUSY poor road it is.
  25. Teak?
