  1. Had to get some obscure people in. Today looks a bit more scope to do that too, time to find some random colombians
  2. BikeGrid 3 - 9/9 PERFECT! 🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩 Rarity: 37 https://bikegrid.escapecollective.com/ I spent a bit of time checking before clicking today. hint AMP
  3. I'm clearly out the loop not knowing exactly who you are, but can see you are deeply involved in the sport. Thanks for your insights, experience and hard stats. Agreed on XCO coverage, once lap2 is done you basically see the top 3 for 75% of the time, 4-10 for 20% of the time and 5% for the rest or someone else crashing. It gets boring quickly if there isn't a tussle, but even more importantly so often a rider "comes out of nowhere" when they've actually been just off the leading pack the whole time but off the coverage. This thread is better for it (even if it's further confirmation how flippen hard this sport is).
  4. hectic, that is not a cheap medal to earn! interesting CT is on the next rung down. https://www.worldmarathonmajors.com/six-star/candidate-races
  5. it is pointless checking anytime more than 48hours out.... but hey, admin needs the hitcount on this thread...
  6. no plans for 2025 just yet... not much. I am aware of that being necessary and did make use of the school track when it was marked up for two sessions where I pushed myself towards puking. I should probably do that again before moaning. but I'm talking about running for 10-15km over the same sort of routes. my average speed is not really dropping (anecdotally!)
  7. the proverbial chicken or the egg?! Epic fails to grow to a wider audience probably because the live coverage is not as good as other sports (and the TdF/road cycling). I do think they are world class in that regard, it is a difficult one to pull off. BUT, Epic was sold in 2016 already.... surely the Wanda/ironman investment was supposed to bring more innovation and eyeballs. surely advance buying it from Wanda was supposed to do the same. anecdotally it seems to have gone backwards since then and maybe coincidentally because the XCO guys left when the UCI cat/points changed. It is really just propped up by the amateurs (still mainly SA guys) to cover the costs.
  8. Thanks for the update. I get the feeling that you will find a way to make this a positive experience, no matter the outcome with the actual perpetrator. *As the wise sage of the hub, I see this as a potential learning opportunity for the rest of us who could unfortunately also ever end up in this situation. *I note the classics season just started, maybe there will be more on point comments coming from your profile than normal. but maybe you will battle like a normal person, and go through it privately, as you are entitled to. I do think posting about it here will definitely get a positive response from all of us (most of whom have never met you or know your actual name).
  9. You need to do 4 to just make the list for Gravel cup log? So that's basically skip one of the May ones and then do both in sept? Is the obvious thing not to make an unofficial log? Take these 5 events, add in the 4/5 other ones. Then you say that your best 4 events from here count, but list anyone who has done more than 3. Winner gets a noddy badge and bragging rights. I think it is fair to say that 4 events are possible, if you
  10. I suppose we have different goals for Comrades. If you've only comitted for the entry and can get that subbed out, then why not? It will always be there next year. Personally I just want to be a part of it, finish and only then concerned with the time/medal. Really not sure if I will do a second one, not even thinking about that now. It would be different for me if I was regularly doing marathons/ultras and then added this onto that sort of schedule. The last marathon I did was in 2011 (when i was early 30s), and I've only now joined an actual running club. It is almost like everything is new, I am seriously wondering if I will ever get some sort of speed back. Despite doing more actual road running than ever, I don't appear to be going quicker week by week. Realise that's not the actual goal but feel like it should be happening (should actually go look at strava to work it out first with figures).
  11. well it is allowed on the Two oceans and comrades The peninsula marathon start/finish is about 42km apart, so that
  12. sort of totally unrelated, but thought I'd throw this comment in here: Twenty years ago, the Dusi K2 years used to have almost 1000 boats finishing (977 in 2002, 969 in 2004, and 970 in 2006) but with the steady decline in participation ever since, only 207 boats finished this year. The Dusi may not attract the same sort of numbers it used to, but it remains as iconic as ever and all who went will tell you what a fantastic event it still is. Well done to Andy Birkett and Matt Fenn on taking the win ahead of local favourites Mtolo and Khwela by over 6 minutes. Andy is now just one win away from equaling the Popes incredible record of 15 Dusi titles.
  13. oops, no i was joking - I meant CFC gas banned from fridges. should have used italics but this oke seems like a proper scam. no self respecting boertjie uses their second name as an initial like they do in the states.
  14. CFC has been banned for at least a decade now!
  15. I know transparency is good, but making this public knowledge seems counter intuitive. No way they are going to test nearly as much with the increased costs involved. Sounds like a green light to a potential doper on the brink of olympic qualification numbers.
  16. great, i think you're doing it right! I reckon you've answered your own question. If you think he wants to do it enough, then maybe some skills training with an experienced friend for some tips or an actual session or two with a skills coach would be a good investment.
  17. so if I've learnt anything from this thread then the trick is clearly to buy a 2nd hand avalanche dust and slap on a 2nd hand shimano shifter and rd
  18. looks decent, in my experience avalanche range is very good bang for buck so see no reason why this should be any different. looking forward to seeing these out there on (and off) the roads. https://www.instagram.com/p/CzoJqcEsTQ7/?img_index=1
  19. wordle too easy and mainstream? bikle too bloody hard? try this! https://bikegrid.escapecollective.com/ ps. don't go too obscure, think there might be some teething issues for game #1 still here is my second attempt (first one had some booboos that i have flagged with them) BikeGrid 1 - 9/9 PERFECT! 🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩 Rarity: 30.3 https://bikegrid.escapecollective.com/
  20. just for fun. 2013 had 31666 finishers $ elite = 141 %ladies = 29 VA (subvets 30+) = 111 (probably same start) VB (vets 40+) = 85 VM(masters 50+) = 47 #( racing tandem) = 70 A batch = 270 B batch = 343 C =389 D batch = 412
  21. Maybe warming up with SA record holder might be the problem? not sure what stage you pulled out/developed pains, but maybe chat to some of the old salts at your club, you might find you're just at a bit of a speedbump.
  22. Goodie bag. we need to discuss the contents of it! no picknpay we might not even get a bag anymore, you need to bring your own.
  23. My view on elite sports requiring dedicated training from a young age? For every pogi/phelps/nadal superstar there are 99 other kids who dreamed of the same but spent their childhood drilled at practice putting in the same hours and never got there. Is it worth the 1% chance of professional success over the 99% chance of doing a sport so much that you don't enjoy it? ** Not in my books, I'd rather take the odds of picking something up later and then working on it. Competitive swimming(IMHO) is a dumb sport, it really is if you think about it. You dedicate a massive amount of your youth to building up to maybe just having a shot at the only thing that counts (olympics). Squad swimming kids are at the pool early 3 mornings a week from a young age. forget 10 000 hours, for swimming you need 30 000. It's a recipe for burnout and no way to grow up even if you do get there - the best possible outcome is you get really good is a kickass college degree(that you hardly studied at because your eyes were so burnt from all the chlorine). Simple answer. reduce the amount of olympic medals for swimming, it's really not such a big sport in the scheme of things but is only held up because it is big at the olympics. Moving on we now have the chinese sporting model, which is version 2.0 of the cold war academy. They throw money, coaches etc at promising kids in olympic medal sports. eg. Does china have a canoeing scene? no, not even a club or a race but they now have olympic medals in it because they have sent a battery of kids through a boarding school for 15 years doing it for the state. another example Lily from china who won olympic sailing gold. her parents saw her 2 weeks a year from the age of 8 and had never seen her actually sailing. Actually a sad story, she doesn;t sail anymore is much happier being a broadcaster/commentator https://edition.cnn.com/2015/08/04/sport/xu-lijia-china-sailing-olympics/ Instead I like the Norwegian model, let the kids play, if they show promise then work on it much later https://www.aspeninstitute.org/blog-posts/how-norway-won-all-that-olympic-gold-again/ edit: added this from another link, https://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/olympics/article-norways-radically-different-approach-to-sports-helped-it-climb-to-the/ ** figures generalised obviously much closer to 0.000001% and 99.9999999%
