  1. Brilliant response, if any of my own speculation seems unfair it was mainly due to there being no public knowledge. Wish you all the best in getting bums on bikes and smiles on the trails.
  2. so who is the media celebrity? Whackhead simpson (i made that up)
  3. Sure, there are a lot of moving parts here. Not sure if GM as a director fell away either once he left SC was significant or not. This thread was started on "what happened to Signal kids bikes?", but has progressed to the brand as a whole. The FB page hasn't been updated since this shift of staff, and this IG post kind of sums it up. (that's december 2023) would be cool to find out they have been beavering away in the background.
  4. the other thing i learnt last year is that mileage means nothing without context! a comrades silver medal runner as yourself will do 2000kms jan=>jun as standard training befitting an event like this. a Robert Mtshali hopeful who can sneak a 4hr marathon a good day will do 1200km mileage with the same amount of time on the legs.. can;t compare the kilometers equally!
  5. I was definitely one of those naysayers complaining about the fistfulls of $$$$ that Epic must have been raking in when they hiked the entry fees after the first few events. I kind of learnt all the backstory since, but it's one helluva listen to hear it directly from the horses mouth. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/building-the-cape-epic/id1503581934?i=1000677696287 I'm going to trust Kevin knows what he's doing with this one. The Epic had a massive knock on effect for the local racing scene, industry and created many job opportunities in the cycling and tourism world. No reason to think this could not have a similar outcome. According to a press release, the substantial purse comes courtesy of a newly-secured multi-year title sponsor whose name is yet-to-be-released. “Securing the title sponsor and offering the largest prize purse in gravel racing is a defining moment for Gravel Burn,” said Kevin Vermaak, the founder of Gravel Burn.
  6. that was what I did last year, although only from Jan. printed it out, and followed what i could with a bit of mix and match depending on how the week was going and the commitment juggles. probably did 85% of the mileage, but was building up from not road running more than 10km in a decade to this in 6 months. every few weeks i would go to strava and back check what i had done. my own big takeways for '25. *do more hills if it's an uprun. *do more hills if it's a down run I was going to say the training plans are not uploaded yet, but they have been put there in the last 24 hours! go find them here. https://comrades.com/race-info/training-plans
  7. To increase the SNR, I went down the rabbithole a bit further. While I know it is not directly related to kids bikes, but Signal pulled off a bit of a marketing stunt in 2019 with their team riding on their "budget" market bikes (with custom mods) to 38th place. I remember it being a big part of the launch material when they launched the Signal Elite hardtail. In 2023, they followed up with the Signal Spectre, their Full sus model. It looked pretty ready to go, even if prototypes and custom paint/gear. They came in 36th, 2nd in the amateur cat just behind these ringers called Docker and Boswell. here's the bike, and the story . It's been 20 months and I don't see it in the flesh yet. so ja, it would appear to me that Signal are in a bit of a pause and reset stage, hence issues finding stock. Maybe they still have big plans, I like competition, it would be sad to see a morewood repeat.
  8. 3000km in 12 months? = 250km/month = ~60km per week great goals!
  9. for a sub R20k bike is 11 spd really an upgrade over 10spd? I know it costs more, which means it will cost more to keep running too. For context I have 9spd road bike, 10spd mtb and 11 spd gravel bike. They all work just fine (well the singlespeed mtb works best, but that's another story).
  10. https://bikehub.co.za/news/dragons-sports-refreshed-by-new-investment-r8320/?srsltid=AfmBOor0g6gRS5Kg8k8AwkKOE4Q7frV_RL0ffTQFUxOX95DLkEViwx1W Oct 2021, so just over 3 years ago. Lots of changes, but Oli was the "face" of Signal. If you don't believe me, go read what is still written on their website here so, ja, none of us are on the inside here, but join all the dots and I would say that the expectation is that Signal is on the way down and Avalanche on the way up in the junior market. The real life experiences in the posts here point to that. Getting AH onto a Jayco Alula is potentially also a massive win locally. There used to be more Anthems on our trails than Spez bikes in total. A sleeping giant could be emerging.
  11. There is a kickass momsen superlight 24 somewhere in cape town southern suburbs. I never actually weighed it but probably about 10kg. totally the way to go if you can spend the time and move decent adult stuff onto the right platform. Some skollie nicked it off the back of the car on the way to cederberg (long story), still holding out hope it turns up somewhere
  12. well rather coincidental that Oli Munnik(Signal) moving to Dragons and the Avalanche bikes seem to have got a bit of an upgrade....
  13. howzit. still running (baths don't count)?!
  14. There will be faster courses than Zandvlei, it's got a bit of grass and sand and sandy molehill grass. There a few people who take parkrun tourism to extremes. I did the Y when Yzerfontein was still there (returning on a new course soon FYI). I think there is no Q, but the Queenstown one has a name like Golf course or something similar.
  15. "you'd admit to having family in Parow North?"

    Cricket......

pulling this thread out the darkroom. Doubt anyone thought we'd make the WTC final, especially after sending the F team to NZ and losing 2-0 there - https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/a-south-africa-test-squad-with-just-seven-capped-players-1414855 But we're on top of the table and off to Lords with a match to spare. We don't have a single Test scheduled till this game (Aus are off to SL in feb, but the brains at the ICC have no test cricket going on before the final), so will have to do some tour matches in ENG somehow. Who makes the XI in this vital one off game? Any bolters who are not currently in the mix? There are some "retired" players who could be handy, QdK probably wouldn't strengthen the team much as a keeper/batter although De Zorzi is hardly confidence inspiring. A fit Anrich Nortje as a bowler? Does one can look at the county championship stats from last year as a guide? Some recognisable names there (both of them 37yrs old), with Simon Harmer 6th on the list of wicket takers. Here would be my best possible team. Elgar Markram Temba (c) Bedingham Stubbs/Rickleton Verreynne(wk) Mulder Jansen Maharaj Rabada Nortje/Abbot (Ngidi?) (an old style SA team full of all rounders, our batting is just not strong enough otherwise)
  17. that's a worthwhile goal too. looking at my stats, I did 6 parkruns last year, with a pb of 22:10. with some smarter training and speed work I think this is viable (also in my 40s and started running properly last year again - the pace is gone!)
  18. Running. hm. doing second TOM an Comrades on the road. want to do both faster. Peninsula marathon is a few weeks away, a sub4 is probably achievable and would be nice. training, want to be smarter and do more offroad training.
  19. shhhhhhh. It keeps the second hand price low.
  20. For this exact reason you can get a lot of bang for buck with your R15k budget. Rim brakes work just fine on road bikes, the first TdF stage won on disk brakes was 2017. In your position I would not buy a bike without trying it first, so not sure where you are from. put the location filter on here and go wild (there's even an alloy Tommasini if you are sentimental). https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/c/road-bikes?minimum_price=10000&maximum_price=15000&meta_size[is_multi_select]=true&meta_size[value]=54%2C55%2C56&meta_brake_type[is_multi_select]=true&meta_brake_type[value]=Rim

  22. This product is over two years old, not available here. Will it work on our networks? https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2023/01/garmin-bounce-activity-tracker-lte-in-depth-review.html%23:~:text%3DThe%20intended%20age%20range%20is,for%20a%20few%20months%20now.&ved=2ahUKEwj0xPyCp8eKAxV3YEEAHbgQHFgQFnoECBwQBQ&usg=AOvVaw1FTreqZGaQMIHGAWCv9rEr
  23. I can imagine the wankers in the horse riding scene make the fully kitted sp3s fan boys look like teenagers at their first disco!
  24. I'm pretty sure those Virginia tech ratings will show very little correlation between price and helmet safety. Obviously don't go for the R200 Raleigh from Makro, but I think the R1.5k range is probably the sweetspot. Anything more and you're paying for advertising and not safety
