  1. ja ja, I know I'm playing devil's advocate here but the notion that this is a pristine national park really grates me. Deer park is a tiny pocket in the whole park. Pretty sure the people in the 1700s did not give a singular crap about recreation and aesthetic aspects. They needed wood. Lots of it. National Park is so arbitrary here being right on the CBD urban edge! Here's a clip from the 1:50 000 map, check the little finger that extends into the suburbs above the red line, must we now protect this as it is NATIONAL PARK? This actually includes the Herzlia sports field, with some irrigated exotic grass not from the area. (actually think these boundaries might be wrong, but the point remains the same). Secondly the orange arrow is GS estate, not national park so let's build a casino there.
  2. I'm in the Ja, but camp here - because TMNP has only been a national park for 25yrs now - it is nothing like other national parks as an island in a city. it's not fenced off and we can't pretend that we can return it to natural state (which includes Lions). but looks like the local neighbourhood watch is behind this effort https://dpvwatch.co.za/get-involved-in-saving-our-indigenous-flora-invasives-hacks/ probably not the best example currently - recovering from this from last April - let's hope it does better than Tokai next door!!
  3. was going to post this earlier, but got busy. pic from Cape Historical FB group. date unknown, but guessing early 20th century. That is a lot of forest up there!! I can sympathise with the vibes that the Parkscape people are doing at Tokai(and beyond), I'm ok with pockets of alien remaining if they serve a purpose and are well managed (and the restored fynbos stuff is actually managed too). but I can't really personally support them because they come across as the creepiest of weirdos that scare the bejeesus out of me.
  4. You're from Upington, excuse the following blatant stereotyping. If you go to the Bi-Lo three times a week, chicken is considered a vegetatian dinner and your ironic nickname is "tiny" then 5km is quite an effort. The most comfortable shoes will do. OR This 5km is done in under half an hour, and you don't have access to some better advice then do some common sense research on your feet and running style. go to the local running club/timetrial, make some buddies and get talking. do some self diagnosis, looking at the shoes you've been using and the wear on them. try this Then go find the pair that fits lekker. buying shoes online without every trying them is not a great strategy in my mind
  5. Pines all mainly burnt down, MTO exited earlier than planned. Fynbos can grow back now - YAY! Instead wattle jumped into the space mainly - BOO! how will this be any different? While I am on the conservation side, deer park is quite a useful, protected and shady green area in a crowded city. Clear it all out will end up with a windswept wasteland - and people won't use it to nearly the same extent.
  6. cool idea. I didn't enter comrades(did back2back) this year, maybe the 2027 crazy one but not going apesh!t for long road stuff. would like to do: 5K sub20 (did 21:45 in Oct during a 10km) HM sub90 (did 1:41 last jan) That's it, I think it's doable with a bit of focus I'm 46 this year so now is the time to learn how to run fastish again. but i also wanna do more trail/paddling/biking so not really concerned about the above.
  7. yup. i got it last week but it is so windy i didn't want to share it here.
  8. pretty sure no CSA licence required for argus plebs. racing group maybe?! and i think the last batch is later than that too!
  9. I'm confused!!! are you saying because it is too cheap no one will come? Is it like perfume, because even though it costs R10 to make, you will not sell it at R20? You need to put it in a fancy spray bottle, give it a foreign name and throw marketing money and the same thing flies off the shelf at Edgars for R250? Dirty south are awesome! keep it up @HubArch
  10. confirmed for those of us on the peasant side of the sport! Good deal for him. https://escapecollective.com/gee-wests-arrival-adds-extra-piece-to-lidl-treks-gc-puzzle/
  11. I was going to say surely Chris Horner, oke was in the vets division when he won the Giro. But no, he did 6 more seasons.
  12. You were next on my list to ask!!
  13. Hi @Chris van dalen You guys do realise that this is BEER weekend in Greyton? Surely you could have picked another available date? https://foolsandfans.co.za/ (I'm the official unofficial mtb guy there) also, bit hard to follow your hard to find social links if you don't link them (I tried both platforms)
  14. Saw this on a car coming out of the KFC, oke broke his only rule.
  15. I'm all for guerilla events, but not taking money and sending people on main road. it is a Sunday at least, and the milkwood half should be wrapped up by the time they get there too. I'm interested in the "hosted cafe checkpoint" they have negotiated at Cape point in particular.
  16. https://getanomalie.com/missions/cape-town-relay-project/?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio&fbclid=PAdGRzdgPLYn9leHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZA81NjcwNjczNDMzNTI0MjcAAaeiPkZCXpnghn3XsYukZMNk9IhHcmPQpk-DWqRtZFtsjyPPF_GrWf9IJ3AOQQ_aem_dMjoIeF96bHmOukj4Fm5UQ Scam?
  17. I've organised the orienteering event for there the past few years. All as you said, but there is a minimal fee. Stay for lunch , food is incredible for what you pay Can also ride at living colour on the way to darling. Trails have been taken over by an outfit so getting rebuilt along the way. Nice pump track growing too. twiga trails on Instagram
  18. looks legit! https://maps.app.goo.gl/kBdJwd5wKXHcta7T7
  19. I sort of had this issue for adventure racing, going shortsighted and need to read 1:50 000 maps to navigate whilst riding. https://www.takealot.com/snowbee-polarised-fishing-sunglasses-with-built-in-1-5-magnifier/PLID90395723 I found these on takealot, different magnification options - they are basically fishing sunglasses, i can imagine you need to see close up when tying the fly onto your line etc. They work pretty well for me at least, don't really care about the latest protour styles. My looks are not as important as being able to see properly.
  20. We are all allowed our opinions - why do you think a) is the case?
  21. I had a squizz at the route GPX - tulbagh to houdenbek Looks like you will have serious de ja vu if you do the Tanks Trek mtb.
  22. this came up on my feed. https://worcesterstandard.co.za/huldeblyke-stroom-in-vir-worcester-sakeman-na-motor-hom-op-fiets-tref
  23. Totally - but "we" don't do ourselves any favours. As a fish hoek resident, DC season overlaps into Argus season and as a community we are like chopped liver. The chops who really cycle all over the place and through silly reds really do ruin any chance of symnpathy. Massive leap, but I can imagine magistrates being part of the general public who are so irritated by cyclists but it's a world wide thing, you'll get the same viitriol in australia, the US and the UK I only posted that one, because the (anonymous) guy identifies as a cyclist. He got the message wrong on this one (IMHO)
  24. The Camps Bay incident there are multiple reports which are pretty clear there was heavy drinking. I know there is the innocent till proven guilty, but even if this ends up with the state not being able to prove it - it doesn't take a massive leap of faith to see a GP numberplated Wabenzi in Dezemba having a 6am joyride in CampsBay involving (plenty of) booze.
  25. this thread got shut down because we couldn't all play nice. Admin is probably on a beach somewhere currently, so maybe this will fly. This remains an important and polarising issue We can all do better. Every time there is an incident, the outrage against cyclists surfaces, and of course we are not blameless. Instead of flooding a particular thread on an incident, a neutral one seems to be a better place (and can get locked) now I'm pretty sure this anon post is wrong, but there is fuel to the fire and boy does it get stoked. There will be countless others
