  1. Took the family up north for Easter Weekend. We spent some time at a lodge in Paihia. Managed to sneak in a trail run and some kayak adventure. The kids also convinced me to parasail. Here are some photos - we really are quite privileged to live in such a beautiful place.
  2. Managed to sneak in a cheeky trail run while away for Easter Holidays. Run took place along the bushway at the Waitangi Treaty grounds.
  3. Its not blatant lies as such. More just embellishment/cherry picking stats to support. For example, the statistic around 46% of all ocean plastic originating from fishing gear only actually applies in the great pacific garbage patch (where it is the highest) it is lower as an average across all ocean plastic. So the producers have sought stats that embellish and paint a picture that is not 100% accurate. I think that's a mistake. It allows the naysayers an opportunity to discredit the film. For the record, I emphatically agree with the purpose of this film. As a 4 year Vegan and huge proponent for eliminating harm to animals, I am already a convert and totally on their team. But cherry picking stats is a risky business.
  4. Dar Es Salaam was my worst. And Shanghai. EEK
  5. I watched it last night. It's a good watch. As a Vegan, I did find it incredibly erratic. It confirms a lot of what we know already - you can't keep taking massive amounts of animals out of an ecosystem and expect everything to be ok. I have been doing some fact checking on the stats in the movie and there is a little bit of Cherry Picking going on. Some of the statistics just aren't true. Thats a shame, because I totally agree with the narrative and am totally on board, but the omni naysayers will spot the mistakes and that will mean the message loses credibility. As with most things in life, don't live in a vacuum, learn as much as you can from varied sources. The ending scene with the whale hunt was extremely difficult to watch. Which is sort of the point. If you can't watch your food being prepared without it turning your stomach and messing with your mind, you really should be asking yourself some hard questions. in summary, humans suck.
  6. Part of my mandatory gear list for some of the ultra's coming up is rain/cold weather gear. I have found it quite beautiful to run early in the cold wet mornings. Its so peaceful and calm. I am normally always alone and can hear the sound of my footsteps and breathing and get lost in my thoughts. Its really quite cathartic. If it wasn't for being "forced" to buy that stuff and getting comfortable in it, I would have missed out on this type of running.
  7. My logic on this... Remember that coach that believed that if you got 1% better each day, over a year you would be a superhero (or something like that)? Tracking the stats means that I can look for small measurable areas to improve daily and that equates to a larger improvement over time. There is a fine line between monitoring for improvement and obsessing though. As a "newer" runner, measuring my performance while using a coach for a program is a good way to improve. I ran socially (jogging) for years without much thought to any of this and my running reflected that. I did the same stuff, so the result was the same.
  8. THERE IS HOPE FOR ME YET!!!! IF you don't mind me asking, how old are you and what is your VO2 Max? I am fascinated by the stats. I think about them all the time while running and do mental maths all the time. I totally nerd out on the data.
  9. On my fastest 5km, my cadence was 181spm and my stride length was 1.21m. So Stretch is really living up to that username by stretching his stride to 1.6m (if you can stretch it 10 cm more, your stride length is the length of my body). Basically I am short.

  11. oh for sure. The cheeky 5km was purely to test the shoes in an environment I was familiar with and it felt good to blast it out. That run was not part of my programme. Just for fun. It was nice feeling what 4:30/km felt like. It varies but on average my weekly programme consists of LSD, one quick run, intervals, one trail run and some other variation runs that sound a bit weird. For example, this week I have a run called a “Monoghetti Fartlek” which kinda sounds like an old Italian man with a flatulence issue. In terms of shoes, the hokas will sort of be the go to training shoes with the saucony’s being the speed shoes. I have also really enjoyed doing some of my intervals on a grass 400metre track. These are great to do barefoot. In fact, the hardest thing for me to achieve in your post is finding somewhere flat. LOL. It might be easier to run a 17:17 5km then finding a flat route. Auckland be having some hills!!! I appreciate all the advice. Since taking a more structured and varied approach, my running has been much more enjoyable and beneficial.
  12. thats pretty poor. I can understand why you are hacked off.
  13. 17:17 is insanely quick(guessing you knew that already) out of curiosity, what was your stride length during that? Also-to the rest of you- I am interested in your average stride length and your average pace. Share away.
  14. So i finally found some skoens. Decided on the Saucony Endorphin Pro for speedwork and the Hoka Rincon 2 for LSD. First run in the Saucony's was promising. Managed a PB on my 5km.
  15. Preach Brother! My 21.1km route has a monster 14% gradient hill in it. I do 3 laps to get the 21.1 km distance so I do that hill 3 bloody times. But at least it makes me stronger!
  16. WARNING !!! WARNING ANOTHER SHOE POST! I run in the Nike Zoom Fly 3's. I like them a lot. They are getting a bit tired (but not quite done yet) and I am noticing that as I am increasing my frequency of runs, they are not drying between runs properly and I don't want to leave them in the sun to dry. So I am thinking I need to go get a second pair of shoes for rotation and then break those in. Around the time that they are broken in, I will likely need to replace the Nikes and will then buy a third pair (effectively replacing pair one) and have two newish sets. I have been reading up quite a bit on the benefits of running in two different shoes to allow for some adaptability between shoes and strengthen different muscles in the feet. Seeing as the Zoom Fly 4's are only due for release at the end of 2021, I am looking outside of the NIKE brand for a change. Shoes high on my list are: Hoka Carbon X2 Hoka Clifton 7's Saucony Endorphin Pro New Balance Fuel cell RC elite. I like shoes that feel fast and light. I don't like hard and sluggish/heavy shoes. I realise most of these shoes far exceed my running ability, but they make me feel sexy and I like them. A lot of folks told me the Zoom Fly's were wrong for me and I love them. Hated the Pegasus. Shoes I have tried and bought that never made it past a few weeks cos they suck (for me at least) Asics Kayano Series Mizuno Waverider Nike Pegasus New Balance 1080 V10 (I didn't like running in these, but use them as casual sneakers quite a bit) What's the thoughts of the Oracles on the hub?
  17. Interesting take on things. I wonder about durability https://www.runningshoesguru.com/2021/02/under-armour-releases-running-shoe-with-no-rubber-outsole/
  18. How good was the sailing yesterday?!?!?!
  19. Hokas : I am seriously contemplating the Carbon x2 as a replacement for my Zoom Fly 3's. I have an appointment on Saturday coming with a shoe dude for an assessment. Also high on the list is a set of Saucony's.
  20. oh totally. First thing I did was get a coach with a decent running programme that’s personalised and tweaked. I’m on week 5 of my program. I have given myself a year to get to 53km distance comfortably.
  21. thats the goal. The legs feel surprisingly ok tonight. I need to work on my nutrition a bit. Other than that, I reckon I’ll hit the 42 in a month or three. Just wanna take it a little easy so I don’t get injured.
  22. Wait what? There’s a strava club with all of you fine peeps in it!!?!?! I was today years old. I’ve just joined. Can you guess my real name?
  23. This is probably not that impressive for some of you, but this is my furthest run to date. I am pretty proud of this. https://strava.app.link/aLoW7IVMBeb
