  1. Yeah shorts are fine but some mornings when it’s frosty at 5:30 it’s nice to be a bit warmer. A bit like wearing knee warmers on the bike - make such a big difference to general warmth and aren’t restrictive.
  2. Anyone running in 3/4 tights? On these winter mornings the extra length does wonders for warmth. I’m currently running in Adidas Alphaskin 3/4 but they don’t offer much in the way of “support”. Think Salomon also have a 3/4 option but can’t find anything else online. Anything else out there specifically catering for men?
  3. Exactly my experience. Empty streets at 6:10. Although the first part of my ride was "out of town" so only cyclists would venture there. Got back into town at around 8:20 and decided to loop through the burbs. Looked like a fun run 5k out there, was insane. Strangely most "athletes" wearing some face covering, the dog walkers and soccer Moms not bothering and they're the ones standing around in groups of 5 or 6 having fat chats.
  4. Our radii seem to overlap based on your description. See you out there - either on the trails (if permitted) or riding/running crazy loops around Greendale.
  5. Hi Guys, Firstly, think of Enduro as a different format of MTB rather than a completely different animal where you need a new bike, helmet etc.. Yes, the routes are slightly more technical than your average marathon but thats just because its a more concentrated amount of (descending) singletrack. Bike-wise your hardtail will never prevent you from riding any part of the course. There are no huge gaps or drops - but I do suggest lowering your seat a bit before dropping into a timed stage. The nice thing with enduro is its very rider-oriented. After stage 1 you will find yourself meeting up with groups of other guys who did other stages first and you can chat to them about what to expect. I suggest if you are a bit nervous, take B-lines and just enjoy being out there, you probably won't be competing for the win anyway. You can always come back another time and try out the more difficult stuff in a less time-pressured environment. Hope to see you guys there.
  6. Still on. Entries are still open on ROAG afaik.
  7. Still nothing in 2.6 or bigger thats not for the #enduro boys. Would love me an ikon 2.6 but nowhere to be found locally.
  8. 23-24 September.
  9. Entries opening soon on ROAG. You don't have to have any extra gear. The enduro light is aimed as an intro to enduro so the stages aren't too hectic. It's more to show guys what the sport is about and how cool it can be. The full enduro has some knarly bits that might warrant some knee pads if you get it wrong. First 3 stages pretty much the same EXCEPT there will be bull runs for the guys doing the full and wanting to ride the hectic stuff.
  10. IMO this wouldn't help. My mate and I were planning our attack on comrades this year and he worked out that if you just make it through the cutoffs you won't be able to finish as you will basically need to run a negative split for the last 20odd km. Which is very unlikely from a 5hr marathoner.
  11. Rather than fastest mile get guys to post current mile PR and see who improves by greatest %.
  12. That was HARD. My first comrades so didn't know what to expect. I started well and everything was on track until that pull up to the bottom of Inchanga. I ran-walked inchanga (as the 9 hour bus cruised past) and went through halfway in about 4:40. Harrison flats sucked and just drained me mentally so I was gatfol when I reached Cato Ridge. From there it was run-walk as much as I could. Was poked at the end and just missed sub10 with a 10:00:45 despite sprinting the last 2km. Definitely won't be there next year. The couch sounds like a better option.
  13. 36250 - Either a Rill Rowan or get strechered off. Whichever comes first.
  14. I'd say a big no. Unless you're driving it the wrong direction. If you have to drive Durbs-PMB-Durbs that's a looong time cramped in a car the day before you want to run.
  15. Last night I also went over my ankle, running too close to the edge of the road... I didn't dare stop to evaluate the damage, just ran it off. Seems fine this morning.
  16. So the official taper starts after this weekend. Are you guys decreasing distance and adding in some intensity or going to just keep it steady?
  17. Ride a steel rigid on one bike. It's pretty rad because the front end is so light so you learn to pop over small obstacles rather than absorb them as you would if you had travel. Same thing applies to climbing. So much better feel between the bike and the ground. Admittedly I only ride smooth forest ST so nothing overboard but throw on some extra-chunky ESI's and a 2.3 and you should be golden.
  18. Okay, I'll bite. All very well to say lets cut mileage but honestly where are you taking it from and why bother? 6 runs a week isn't excessive and perhaps a double sat/sun long run can be skipped, but overall I think Lindsay's programs are spot on. I'm personally doing a mix between the silver and BR, subbing in some long rides instead of a double weekender. And then I do a quality Thursday instead of a plod. But for us Novice runners, its all about mental prep. Being able to complete the weekly mileage builds confidence and that's what I'm aiming for rather than counting k's to June 4
  19. Howick trails looking great, thanks Grif.
  20. Running in NB 1080 with 8mm drop and I love them but I've never been a minimalist type of guy. They aren't super flexi but also have low enough drop to let my feet do their thing. Why don't you do more form work on your stride rather than changing shoe?
  21. Back to the simplicity of just throwing on a pair of shoes maybe? I've started running with mates who would never normally run but a 5k is so accessible and a great time to banter and spend time outside.
  22. Okay so I've committed to the big C for next year, entry will be in after pay day. I've never run a marathon but my half PB is 1:36 and I've been running consistently for a few years. I'm following Lindsey's program for Bill Rowan as I slot in there with all goal times but will set a Comrades goal next year sometime. I now need to plan my qualifier assault. What do you guys think of a marathon end of January and end of Feb? Johnson Crane is in Jan and I'd like to use that as a qualifier and then have Maritzburg Marathon as a backup in case things go wrong. Not worried of quali time, as long as I finish Johnson and then will run Maritzburg as a training run. Are these two too close together? Should I just give PMB a skip if I qualify in Jan?
