  1. hey man. this guy is selling a pretty cool trial specific bike http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150723604068453&set=o.129670410443623&type=1
  2. Dead simple dude! I had my old giant brass converted to single speed. you can buy single speed chain tensioners that fit onto your frame where the hanger for the rear deraileur fits. then its a case of selecting a gear ratio you like, mounting the neccessary gear and then shimming it correctly so that the rear-wheel gear runs in line with the front. you then need to trim your chain to the right length and then set the tension using the tensioner. as far as i recall my chain tensioner was R.180 and labour was also not much. cost R.350 in total to convert to single speed. tho in retrospect i am pretty sure i could have done all of it myself with some thought.
  3. Yep that would be the beast!
  4. Hmmm tasty organs... there is a super nice scott voltage for sale in classifieds if you are keen. i think all it needs is a front brake.
  5. Have any of you guys seen any of these bikes?! http://www.brooklynmachineworks.com/index2.html they are trying to make a shaft drive one with a miniature motorbike gearbox! no derailleurs! weird... and kind of sick looking....
  6. I will take a white one, a blue one and a third to mount on my wall cos its pretty..... wakes up...... depressed.
  7. pleasure! just saw this on buycycle http://www.buycycle.co.za/buycycles/bmx/felt-en-2/felt-vault-20.5-bmx-felt.html. its a dirt specific bmx going for R.2100 new.
  8. Hmmm. tough one. occasionally there are DJ bikes for sale on thehub for R.2500 to R.3000 but they are not all that common. www.obike.co.za has a GT Chucker for sale for R.4000 which is quite a nice entry level bike. possibly a bit heavy tho. You can also pick up some awesome mongoose BMX's for a steal on junkmail. I am riding a mongoose Fireball DJ bike which i am really enjoying. i found it on junkmail for R.2500. there are a lot of bmxers that swear that its better to ride a bmx rather than a dj bike but... only if you land properly! I like having front suspension! So I would advise a Dj bike, particularly if he is used to riding mountain bikes. but that being said if he is short it may be hard to find one that fits him as they normally do not come in different frame sizes.
  9. Yep. their store is now at city rock climbing gym.
  10. Gah! Effortless bastards... we need some trails like that!
  11. awesome! Saved by mountainmailorder/city rock!
  12. Hmmm too technical? Probably a one finger pull up onto a desperate sloping gaston with no feet. Wait! Wrong Forum! I Hate tight hairpin turns on the side of hills (something like the angle-grinder route at the toyota cycle park). cannot get that damn thing right!
  13. Bloody hell those are huge! and he died jumping into a swimming pool? How? he looks indestructable in the video. tragic
  14. Bugger! I guess the real problem with this sort of incident is that a.) it is really unpredictable when someone will mug you or just move out of your way. b.) you are really defenceless as there is no way of getting the first move in. your defence will always be after the unfortunate event and is even more complicated when the bicycle is involved. ( I have been practicing the delicate art of dismounting and then using my 16kg dirtjump bike as a bludgeon. tough for you Carbon okes...)
  15. Awesome! thanks for the advice guys. I will check mikes bikes as i live two blocks away from them, and if that does not work i will check with city rock and see if they can mail them to me. (if not, Thank you Capricorn!) If that fails, then i guess CRC or probikeshop it will have to be. I like the Idea of the freeriders cos the way i ride it may be better if i can leave the bike easily when something goes wrong....
  16. Hey all! Does anyone know where i joburg i can get a pair of 5.10 Shoes? preferably either the minaars or the freeriders? I saw them advertised on mountain mail order but apparently they are out of stock. Cheers!
  17. Hey All! Time for me to pick the communal mind. I have been trawling the net looking for some new routes to ride. I have been particularly interested in routes with decent amounts of singletrack that have a good balance of technical and pretty. I spend a lot of time riding at van gaalens as well as groenkloof, rietvlei, northern farms etc. In my searchings i found this link which is for a 60km route that follows the railroad in magaliesburg. http://www.mtbroutes.co.za/trails/gauteng/43-central-gauteng/134-railroad-lodges-mtb-trail-closest-citytown-magaliesburg.html and i also found this one which is in a game reserve. http://www.mtbroutes.co.za/trails/gauteng/43-central-gauteng/129-ingwe-bush-camp-mtb-trail-closest-citytown-magaliesburg.html. there is also mention of a long circular route which starts at lanseria. Has anyone here done these trails? or does these trails regularly? I am keen to ride in new places!
  18. what i do is when heading up the spruit, cross over at tana and gleneagles intersection as if you were going through to emmarentia dam. Once you have crossed the intersection, follow the trail as if going to emmarentia dam. you will go through a muddy dip and then you will cross a small bridge with a small dam on your right. the single track then splits, with one peice heading left and a smaller less defined peice heading right. follow the right hand peice, you will cross past a small community centre/clubhouse place on your right. there is then a long peice of single track which follows between the road (I think its called john mckenzi dr) and the reed beds. follow that. eventually the trail will come to an end at 5th ave. cross 5th and cycle up schroder street and into a park. follow the single track until you come across beyers cross over beyers and then follow the single track up through montgomery park. cross milner and then follow the trail through to 7th street. cross 7th and you are in the bottom of alberts farm.
  19. Looks amazing! WHeeee! where on the spruit is it?
  20. there is a bouldering area there? seriously? where? i thought i had bouldered everywhere in joburg! in terms of the dodge factor it is fairly high. a bunch of guys have tried to mug two of my mates there on at least two occasions, fortunately they managed to escape with their bicycles.
  21. yo dude. if you go to www.buycycle.co.za they have a bunch of entry level 26 inch dirt jump bikes for pretty good prices and they deliver to your door. the maxmax and absolute cromo look like good options tho the maxmax has solid front forks.
  22. hey all! thanks for the help! I have been anxiously waiting for insurance to tell me what bike i was going to be given. it now looks like they will be paying out cash which is infinitely better as it means i can just look online for a decent second hand bike that fits my needs. thanks!
  23. Hey communal group mind of awesome information. I am looking to upgrade my bike from v-brakes to disc (Frame and fork are compatible) what is the cheapest way of doing this? i know that i need new hubs as well as the discs and calipers and all those goodies. but they talk about a number of terms that i do not understand. What is the difference between centre lock disc brakes and conventional disc brakes? And what is the cheapest way to do this upgrade? Help Hayden
  24. Hey all! I recently had my Giant brass stolen from my house and so i am looking for a replacement dirt jump bike. I Rode a scott voltage yz 35 and it felt pretty cool. the only thing that worries me a bit are the points on the frame where the wheel axle actually attaches to the frame (is it called the dropout?). It kinda looks a bit flimsy to me and i am worried about snapping them. the fork is a Suntour XTC V2 which has only 80mm of travel. overall i am a bit worried that this bike will not survive the thrashing of dirt jump and i was wondering if anyone has had any experience with these bikes?
  25. where are you based? If you are in Joburg then read on..... I got my old giant brass 2 from cajees in fourways for R.4000 and they had some scott DJ's for sale too. Those varied between R.6000 and R.10 000. or you can contact the guys at Mikes Bikes in Greenside. They had a special where they built up a mongoose frame with some pretty good componentry for about R.6000. Let me know when you find a good deal. My Dirt Jumper got stolen from my house on friday night so I am now looking for one too... Hayden
