  1. check out http://www.buycycle.co.za/buygear/helmets/fox-racing-en-2-3-4-5/fox-rampage-black-helmet-2011-fox-racing.html R.899 for a FF helmet. when i was 8 i face planted while riding a yamaha PW80. mouth was closed and you could see all my teeth. FF helmets kids!
  2. Cool! I will put up a post when i go. looks fun! a while back I wound up on the old giloolies farm/ linksfield ridge dh track on my old 80mm HT with v-brakes. not good.....
  3. Hey all. I was talking to some guy and he was saying that the 139 in waterkloof is a really smooth track with lots of opportunities to bail out and that you could do it and have a lot of fun on just about any bike. is this true or was he trying to convince me to undertake suicide by 120mm travel bike?
  4. Awesome Shoes! I got the freeriders and they are holding up seriously well. and my 5.10 anasazi's are absolutely stupendous. Go stealth rubber!
  5. Gah! please someone organise something like this in joburg. or the magaliesburg. or somewhere with hills near joburg..... or maybe i should just move to somewhere with downhill trails....
  6. hi all! I was recently looking at some shocks on buycycle and theyn are advertising some 2 versions of the rock shox ario rlr's. one which is bottom pull and one which is top pull. what are they talking about and what is the difference?
  7. Cool! how much are they likely to sell for in stores? which stores will stock them?
  8. I think i remember reading an article about 27.5 inch wheels and the verdict was that it was a combination of the worst of both worlds.
  9. Hmmm. I am not sure if i am talking out of the wrong orifice here.... but bear with me! my friend and i have got very different techniques when it comes to hills. He claims that sitting down puts more weight on his back tire, giving him better traction. I on the other hand, prefer to get into a slightly heavier gear and alternate my body weight from one pedal to the other. I also use my arms a lot! alternating pulling and pushing so that i essentially keep the rear of the bike firmly planted and not too much weight on the front wheel while still providing a fair amount of power (as body weight+muscle is what is pushing the pedals down, not just my thighs..) not sure if this technique is best but it seems to work for me! standing up seems to allow the bike to move under me better and i am using more muscle groups to help with the climb. so i guess that means that i am generally tired rather than having over-worked buggered thighs!
  10. If i am around i am more than keen to come and help. (might have a massive hangover as its the end of the intervarsity rock climbing comp the night before but hey. thats what manual labour is for!) we need to organise a time.
  11. ah you guys are going to have an awesome time! It might actually spoil you completely No trail in joburg will really compare to that! Happened to me with rock climbing venues. I now am saving up for a house in boven....
  12. ummm. are we comparing new bike to new car? if so, no. If we are comparing current bike to current car then absolutely! Specialized stumpjumper fsr and an old Subaru Impreza! ( they actually have very similar personalities, rattly, squeeky, expensive and over-rated but oh such fun to ride/drive!)
  13. I spend a lot of time with the rock climbing fraternity and have not heard of any recent incidents in boven. Crime was bad a couple of years ago with guys robbing you while you are climbing (not cool at all!). but they caught the gang responsible and i have not heard of anything since. I still try to stay out of the bottom of the kloof which is near the informal settlement when i climb there. Elands Krans also had quite a bad rep for crime but it has closed now as far as i know. staying with gustav at roc n rope or up at the tranquilitas camp site is great and i seriously recomend them! I am actually planning a trip there for the 7th of july for some climbing and biking. will write a brief review after that.
  14. I am keen! sounds fun!
  15. hell yeah. have driven past there and though that there was potential! give us the exact location! where do you park and how do you ride from there?
  16. Hmmm. seatpost is a bit worn. maybe i should have a look at that...
  17. I have had the bike for four weeks and have ridden it quite a few times. squeeks only appeared after riding very hard on a seriously rocky trail in groenkloof pretoria. i gather that the various bearings were replaced about 4 months ago.
  18. Hi all. have any of you had any experience with squeeks and groans coming from everywhere on your stumpy? I bought mine 2nd hand recently and the owner said that it sometimes squeeks and if it does, tighten the seatpost. I have done this and it has made no difference. he also said that the various linkages for the rear suspension had been recently replaced and did not need frequent lube. is this true? what is the best procedure for isolating the source of these squeeks? they could come from a variety of different moving parts as there are so many on this bike!
  19. Oh Dear. The old 29er vs 26er arguement... try both and whichever feels most comfy for you is best. some people find 29ers cumbersome but others claim they climb better. choose whichever works for you and your riding style.
  20. this is what DH tracks used to be? wow... there was a guy in pretoria trying to sell his Giant ATX DH2. man alive they believed in solid engineering then. its like the golden gate bridge on wheels.
  21. heh! really? I found them really useful when i was firs starting! the technique was not to tighten them too much. Maybe it was psychological. Lol. Have many flat pedals and my super awesome 5.10's which get used for everything now.. (think the girlfriend is getting jealous...)
  22. CRC is having a special on them at present so you can pick up a pair of the freeriders for R.635 plus postage. totally worth it!
  23. With the old flat vs clipped arguement.... falling with cleats sucks and i find that you need a bit of experience to get your feet out of them before you fall off. which, if you are a begginer is super trixy. I spent a lot of time falling hard on technical sections just cos i could not get my feet out. A good compromise is toe straps. 5.10 freeriders are awesome but a bit pricey. takkies and toes straps give you the stability you need but also the ability to get your feet out in a hurry! @carrot. the flat pedal idea is that you move with the bike. when you dirt jump (I dont know about downhill as i have no experience there!) you use the bike to launch you but you bend and move your legs with the movement of the bike so your feet stay on the pedals. you are not a rigid thing attached to the bike, more of a fluid dynamic thing which compensates for the bike movement. Have you ever watched bmxers or trial riders when they bunny-hop? their feet never leave the pedals! i think it might have something to do with energy transfer. Give flat pedals a try on a play bike. you can have a lot of fun bouncing around on things and i feel it really helps your riding technique. (which is maybe why the dh'ers are so scathing of cleats? )
  24. Go to sleep early! or train in the evenings. does wonders for my moto not being sleep deprived.
