Ah that makes a healthy amount of sense. Do things like impacts when jumping/dropping or hitting rocks damage the engagement points? or is it more of a luck of the draw type thing?

time for the noooob question: what difference do the hubs really make? I understand in terms of things like style points and different spoke numbers etc but has anyone managed to damage a hub? if so, how do they fail? rip the spokes out of the hub? bugger up the bearings inside the hub? I am thinking new wheel thoughts and i thought the rim was probably the most nb bit?

Have you checked out the trials in south africa facebook group? the one guy on there (cant remember his name) was selling his mongoose fireball that had been converted to trials. As far as i recall, he got a fixed front fork, converted it to SS and got a much smaller front cog. but check them out, they might be able to at least point you in the right direction.

the problem with environmental laws and procedures in this country is that it has been formalised in such a way that as long as procedure is followed then no actual thought is required. I.e. Fraking. they probably got some half assed environmental company to do the impact assessments, notified everyone within 500m of the site as to what was happening (as required by law). Did the cursory environmental study, didn't find anything rare on the site, published in a local newspaper and thats it. EIA done as far as the authorities are conserned. never mind that the impacts are in such a way that they will not be picked up by an impact assessment as required by the governement. Makes me grumpy. Oh yeah, did you know that to be an environmental practitioner you do not need to have studied ecology or botany or animal sciences or anything? A townplanner is allowed to sign of EIA's when it is likely nthat they cannot even understand the jargon used in specialist reports! so the authorities do not even get made aware of the potential impacts outlined in a specialist report as everyone that does the signing cant handle polysyllabic words! AAAARGH!

Dude! point out to them that you have spent so much on fixing your current bike and that maybe a more "burly" XC bike is what you need. like a second hand scott voltage yz or a giant stp or a gt chucker or a mongoose fireball. those are totally XC bikes......

Hey all. I want to replace the rear shock on my 08 stumpjumper fsr as i keep bottoming the damn thing out and just generally do not like it. Specialized has used a weird shock size 7.25 X 1.75 Some internet trawling has said that i can fit a 7.5 X 2.0 or even a 7.875 X 2.5 what is the best way of measuring if a shock will fit? I am aware that by changing the eye to eye length i will likely raise the bottom bracket but as i am planning on putting on a longer travel front fork it should not affect handling too much as the longer fork should compensate for the steeper head angle as a result of the raised bottom bracket. any advice?
